Hard drives

Hello Tom,

Love your pictures and places you go.

I also love your small configurations.

I'm prepping for a short that, I hope, will be shot on Epic beginning June. (Epic is here :-) )

We plan to do the back up the "old style" (from the download station and Macbook pro to an HD) but the amount of data will be much bigger as an usual RED One shoot, as we plan to shoot 5k and some HDRX.

I'm wondering what would your recommandation for storage and Hard Drives be?

Wich Hard drive do you use when making backups in the field?

Have a nice shoot.

Thanks.

Patrick

Lately I have been using G-Raid 2TB eSata drives.

Sometimes I use 7200rpm Black Caviar 2TB bare drives and harddrive toasters.

Here is a single frame from a shot I did at Big Sur on the Epic, with Greg M's 12mm Ultra Prime. I did not process the look of this. It was done by someone else. I'm also not sure if this was HDRx or not. I shot about 10% of the takes as HDRx.

I shot this as a slow, graceful, motorized Z-axis push, so there should be a lot of depth and beauty in the move. I think I shot most of this at 48fps, plus a few passes at 24 and 96. One thing I love about the Epic is how quickly I can shuffle through framerates, formats, etc, on the touchscreen.

My friend Ian at LightIron has taken a look at some of the 96fps stuff I shot of the coastal waters and rocks, and says it looks pretty awesome. The crashing waves really lent themselves to that framerate, I think. I've just been too busy out shooting to even look at any of the stuff I shot at Big Sur! I can't wait till LightIron has their 4K projector room running!

Damn, I'm hoping your movie is going to be showed at a danish cinema when it's out. Would love to see it on the big screen.

Just logged in looking for one thing and one thing only, new Big Sur posts. Score! Thanks for posting such a nice frame Tom. Can't wait to see how they weave your stuff through the film.

That grade looks beautiful. I am happy to see some of what David was talking about, assuming that is a final grade. Very dreamy! Though it very well might not be the base look, but more of a surreal moment. Well, beautiful grab either way. It is really making me missing my short visit to the Sequoia National Park.

Shooting some sick rock formations yesterday afternoon on Epic + CineSlider + Duclos 11-16.

These days, I often film the sunsets on the Epic, then film timelapse all night.

Hi Tom,

Do you mind to describe the Kessler configuration you are using here?

I am seriously considering to get a Kessler Shuttle Pod and/or a Cine Slider with the motorized head and the Oracle controller for my work in Patagonia with my Epic-X (if delivered on time) at the end of the year. But I want to test it on Gran Teton and Yellowstone before my trip.

Thanks in advance!

Christian, I would suggest that you get the shuttle pod dolly kit, with the new light-weight end spreaders (instead of the ones with the built-in legs). The Shuttle Pod is a dolly system which is future-proof for new motion-control systems that Kessler is developing right now. If I were you, I would wait until July to get the head, because Eric will have a new pan-tilt system available then, which will be better suited to the size and weight of the Epic, as well as to DLSRs.

But the Shuttle Pod is really nice! You can get a 100mm bowl for the Shuttle Pod car, if you have a 100mm fluid head.

Hey Tom, do you have a motor home that you drive around in? Or just a big truck and stuff for camping? Curious since you're all over the place and in nature so frequently -- wondering what your travel setup is ... oh and awesome stuff, of course.

Thank you for the info Tom. Appreciated!

When you are talking about the "new light-weight end spreaders (instead of the ones with the built-in legs)" Do you mean this? http://www.kesslercrane.com/product-p/sp-rail-kit-4.htm

Christian, I dont think so. Eric designed some new light-weight end spreaders that are much lighter than the ones with the rounded ends and legs/feet. Just ask Eric or Chris Beller. They are fairly new.

Im out shooting now and my Internet connect is pretty limited at the moment.

Will do, thanks!

No worries. Thanks again for the info. Good luck with your night shoot.

Thanks again Tom, Definitely I will be getting those.
I am intrigued with the new pan & tilt head you mentioned!

More fun times in Nevada with the Epic.

Epic on a mototized CineSlider move at Mono Lake. I only used the last 3 feet of the track, so I could push the camera straight forward with the Duclos 11-16 at about 14mm.

whaaaat. is that thing in the water? hehe, that's risky.

mono lake is a wonderful place.

i've got a huge panoramic print in my room that i took from the road going towards yosemite (actually, coming out of yosemite :)

now that i think about it, here it is! shot probably at least 5 years ago...

Epic on the Kessler Porta Jib at Lake Tahoe this afternoon. What a fantastic spot lower Eagle Falls is! I shot this mainly at 48fps, with some 96 and 24 mixed in.
