  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tom Lowe...

An now you need to tell the story behind the drop :D

Ok, when Obama releases the Osama death photo, I will release the Epic death footage. hhahahaha. actually, we only have footage of the takeoff, and it stops about 5 seconds before the crash :(

Ugh. That breaks my heart. Having worked with that same pilot (I think) before a bunch of times, It's just hard to believe. He was always extremely cautious, and safety (of both people and gear) was paramount. $hit happens, and gear fails, I suppose.

Jim Jannard's email to me after the crash basically said, "Shit happens, we'll get you a new one." Like a boss.

One thing I noticed is, now that I have the redmote, it seems like I don't need the side handle any more. I took it off. Redmote has the same buttons and stuff. And now, the button for Magnify is over to the camera-left side of the camera, closer to the lens... a little easier to press. The User 1 & 2 buttons are apparently not assignable yet, but Deanan told me he was probably going to make those assignable soon.

Out of curiosity, does that imply that Jim allowed you a place back in line and accepted your insurance payment on a new one, or that Jim actually spotted up a new camera for you?

Not, of course, that anybody should expect the latter (ever) or take that a implication that Red is in the business of freely replacing cameras... but if Jim made this one-time gesture, that's _AWESOME_.

I wonder if you could even get insurance on cameras that are flying on RC rigs? The people flying these rigs must have some kind of liability insurance but I doubt the rigs themselves can get covered? I would think the deductible would be very high if you could get covered? Correct me if I am wrong. When you apply for life insurance they say: We cannot cover you if you partake in dangerous activities like: skydiving, car racing, piloting an aircraft - etc....

Steven, Jim was nice enough not to get angry with me, and to allow me to get back in line for a replacement. No free camera at all.

My insurance covered the camera, and the chopper pilot paid the deductible.

Of course Jannard was gonna let Tom get back in line. Duh! What are you, some kind of photography asinine? We are talking about Tom Lowe. You ough'ta look him up dude... ;)

So the lower and now sadly gone serial number Epic was on a heli without you? Or did they set up the mount, which fell with the camera? Oh, and what lens was on it? Thank goodness you didn't have the Leicas that day... talk about adding insult to injury. Well, you got that going for your luck which I suppose isn't as bad as we thought. ;) Actually! You are probably good for life now! With this accident you will have to shoot a heck'uva lot to get to your next accident due date. So maybe that's actually something to look forward to, as it would let you know you've done right in life and shot a lot. :)

I missed the post where you recounted the accident. Though maybe you don't want to do that anyway. But let's see a BTS of the new Beast! Did your insurance cover accessories and lens too? Maybe you can swap into the new Red top handle now. :)

Tom, I'm interested in your Cineslider setup. The offset looks like it would make the whole system unbalanced. How do you compenste for that? What are the two tripods you are using? are they just screw-mounted to the slicer, or are they on ball mounts?

Hey Tom. Is that the 3 foot version or 5 foot version of the Cineslider? Is there any one you recommend over than another.
Thanks

Those are Manfrotto 536 CF sticks, and we use these quick release plates between the half balls and the CineSlider: http://www.adorama.com/BG394.html It makes the setup time super fast.

The 100mm sidecar works great. I've been thinking that a little counterweight might not be a bad idea, though. Eric could whip up something like that fast.

Eric and I are still moving forward with a slightly larger slider design, but it will be a while before that is finished. In the meantime, the CineSlider is great.

Tom, is there a reason you went with the sidecar instead of the 100mm high-hat? Lower profile perhaps? It seems like the high-hat would be more balanced.

I am trying to shoot as many "Z-axis" moves as I can these days, meaning that I want to push the camera nearly straight forward toward the subject. Having the camera off to the side on that sidecar helps me to push the camera in a slightly less caddy-corner motion, if that makes sense. I prefer Z-axis over side-to-side motion.

Here is an example where I framed the slider just out of view on camera left and pushed the slider "forward":

I actually realized that I do not have a 100mm high hat for the CineSlider! Eric is sending me one today. I will test it vs the sidecar and see how they compare.
