  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE M8 (008) Discussion thread

Transported from Recon ;)

Engadget did it again... We Love those guys over @ Engadget.

I sent the a report to them last week, shame they managed to ignore half the info I sent them - hence the Cali/Utah screwup.

The Recon thread was far too cool not to share with the world!

Loving your work so far all of you! Keep rolling and having fun. I shall just live vicariously for now.

Cheers,
B.

Hehe. I sent them a nice little writeup back when I first started editing the pieces last week. It's a wonder they still have so much "credibility" if you can call it that. :)

I was communicating with Tim, this morning, and provide correction on the location ;)

He has already apply the Utah location on the Article.

Not to make excuses for them, but I know that some times with so many Tips and articles that they get it is not tot difficult to mix info up..

Wow. I thought reading comments on CNN was bad. There are, unfortunately, some seriously misinformed people out there. And some true haters, who for whatever reason will never give RED a chance (RED will do just fine without them). Such is life.

True Steve, is the same Joke of the Old Fox that could not get to the Sweet Grapes, and after
Jumping for so long trying to get it, give up saying, oh well, that Grape was Bitter any ways...

They despite what they can not afford and or have, always the few in the many ;)

Thanks everyone, including Ketch :)

On our Recon Epic M8 thread I just posted the camera setup specs I used on that sequence, plus some insight into what to expect from the motion montage we'll be posting later tonight.

Epic is seriously making it hard for me to sleep at night as my head swims around with other shots I'd like to get :)

Here we GO!! ;)

RED EPIC M8 First Test Footage is Now LIVE!!

Wanted to Thank all involved, beginning with Steve and Pamala Gibby for their Hospitality, and for bringing
us to the Beautiful sites of Zion National Park, and Eagle Point Ski resort, Utah in a fantastic Experince that was
this first Test Shoot of RED EPIC M8!! And off course a big thanks also goes to the boys,
Michael Thornton, Joseph Hutson, Aaron Peak at Hollywood DI.

NOW LETS ENJOY IT!!

RED EPIC M8 First Test Footage

I think the additional resolution over R1 is even apparent on vimeo... Those wides of the peaks/valleys are just brimming with detail even off in the distance... Were those RPZs?

Thanks for putting the clip together guys. Theres some really impressive shots in there especially the first few...

I hate to go against the grain, but is it ok to say that I was largely unimpressed by the majority of the shots? The shots just don't really show off the camera, and they don't really look that great.

This is just my opinion... don't sue me.

Thanks guys, but the credit of this footage goes all to Steve Gibby, as He shot all the footage ;)

Wide shots were on the Ruby 14-24 and all the Ski Resort stuff on the Canon PL MOunt 150-600 Zoom.

With few clips with the RPZ 17-50.

We were supposed to do one more day with the RPP's and MP's but the Weather didn't allowed ;)

Many more shoots to come ;)

I hate to say this because I've been watching all your BTS videos with a big smile, but in my opinion this video is not the best to hype the quality of the footage EPIC produces. To me that could have been shot with a DSLR and I think most people will agree. Also Vimeo will compress the footage and after that it's.. well you know. You should at least enable the download in Vimeo.

In my opinion these first footages should make huge statement. This doesn't do it, at all.

cool, I don't mean to sound rude, I loved watching rest of your videos and you seem to be really down to earth guys. I was just hoping more from the first EPIC video.

Today we had the pleasure of grading our first EPIC footage .... and again, I had one of those amazing RED WOW moments .... the footage that Steve and Ketch shot of the Zion park canyon is utterly amazing .... it is so detailed and immersive it looks like it's been shot in 3D .... I stood in front of our DI screen and literally shook my head in wonder ... it truly is something special.

Great job, Steve and Ketch and many thanks to Michael Thorton for allowing us to be a part of this history making time .... we were the first to grade RED footage back in the summer of 2006 and I was stunned then ... we then graded RED M-X footage when it first came out and showed it to the ASC and we were all impressed with the improvements .... but this EPIC footage is a quantum leap in terms of image quality and color science ... Jim and Graeme have really pushed the envelop forward in terms of digital acquisition and RAW image capture.

If you're impressed with the Zion park canyon scene when you see the HD video on your computer monitor, you will be truly amazed when you see it projected in a calibrated theater environment.

Great work guys ... looking forward to more EPIC moments!

Cheers,
Neil

Tonybuzzan and Derek S,

We're quite aware of the limitations of compressed download on the Web, such as Vimeo. Everyone is aware of that. But its a way to get the file out initially. We'll follow that up with a 1080p direct download in the days to come. If you'd like a solid professional opinion from the colorist team at Hollywood DI who did the color work on our piece in 4k, and viewed it in minute detail on a top-level 4k monitor, then read the would above from Neil Smith the supervising colorist for the piece. His opinion of the quality of the original 5k files and 4k color version should open your eyes to the quality of the original file.

When you go to NAB this year you'll be able to see Epic 5k originated, then 4k graded footage clips (like the ones I shot) on Red's 4k monitors. I's suggest that you tape a protective pad onto the bottom of your chin before you watch it though - because your jaw will be bouncing off the floor when you see 5k originated Epic footage like this in 4k.

Thanks David...:-)

You're right! I've shot a lot of Kodachrome in days past, and your analogy surely fits. Since you mentioned Kodachrome, beyond the seven National Parks close around me here (5 in southern Utah, Grand Canyon in AZ, and Great Basin in Nev) there is also a beautiful state park of red rock canyons in Utah named Kodachrome Basin. It got that name way back in the '60's because so many still photographers were shooting there - and most of them were choosing to use Kodachrome - couldn't imagine using Ektachrome on those red cliffs, right!

Come on over here and pay us a visit and we'll take Epic over to Kodachrome Basin to match aesthetic with aesthetic...:)
