  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE M8 (008) Discussion thread

First I like to give my sincere apologies, the site as Steve pointed out is back up, but we expect more problems,
as we are in the process to change both the Front end as well as the Back end server Host, and for Video we are
going with Amazon.

NOT IN OUR WILDEST DREAMS we would have imagine to receive such an incredible number of visitors, THANK YOU!!!

Working very HARD on getting this permanently resolved, as this is TRULY NOTHING BUT A TASTE of what is to come,
with Steve Gibby we just but tucked out the camera for few tests, including that of extreme low temperatures and
altitudes, and this will not stop here, in fact it has Just Begin!!

We will be loading up the second Photo Gallery as soon as we get the Server issue resolved to insure Bandwidth
capacity and server upload speeds are adequate for the kind of traffic we are getting from over 120 COUNTRIES!!

HOWEVER... Our BTS Video form the last day Shoot at the Ski resort will be uploaded in a few on our KETCHROSSiSTUDiOS Vimeo Account

Okay guys,

after long 8 hours drive, and 117 emails replied, I tucked a minute to grab this R3D file from 5k 96fps, pass it thru Photoshop, a quick second, blue filter added, NO sharpening, just wanted to give a little taste of what is to come.

EPIC M8 Footage will be Edited and Graded, to be posted in the next few days.

Frame Grab from Footage Soot by Steve Gibby ;)

An EPIC M8 Snow Day!! Thanks to Joseph Huston for the Video ;)

Thanks guys. Most of my short career (4 years) has been sporting events. I had an immense amount of fun just hanging out with the crew and it's so cool that I now have the opportunity to spend many more weeks with the M8.

Just because this video is the last from this M8 shoot, there are yet many many more shoots to come which naturally mean equally as much content with BTS. It's gonna be a great year! Might I go far as to say it'll be EPIC?

(The puns will never end)

Thanks team! Steve, just to let you know that we have been following this with excitement from Perth, Australia. Great to see the Epic in action... and thank you for all the info. Well done!

Thanks Terry! I think its easy to see from the photos and BTS video that we had tons of fun out there doing the field testing of Epic M8. I think when a crew is relaxed, and has a passion for their work, that it really doesn't seem like work at all. As a result the finished work always seem to come out real good. When I produce/direct television programs I always make sure each crew member hired is good-natured, then I also keep a lot of humor, good food, and basically treat everyone like they're part of a big family - then we jump in and have fun , with everyone trying to do their best work.

After the work was done each day, and we went back to my ranch, we still laughed, talked over good meals, checked photos and footage, then stayed up way late each night talking about our other ideas for using the camera. There was great cohesiveness among this crew. The looseness and humor on those BTS videos was natural - we were simply ourselves, and way excited to be using Epic.

Epic is amazing Terry. When you hold the camera in you hands you can't believe that such high resolution, frame rates, and other cool features are all built into such a small package! Then when you shoot the camera in 5k the one thought that keeps running through you mind is "I can't wait to get back to the hotel or studio and check this footage out!".

I've worked all over Australia many times, but never in Perth. Hopefully we'll get there sometime soon and we can pay you a visit :)

Good on ya Mate

Why there is no any footage from Epic 007 and Epic 008? Something is wrong?

I can't speak for Epic M 007...

But I can speak for Epic M 008 :-)

All our footage looks great! Red rock canyon scenics and driving shots, overcranked skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobile, undercranked long tunnel drive, etc. First comes the behind the scenes videos and still photos, then we have already posted a frame grab from motion taken from Epic M 008.

We've posted before on this thread, and the other Recon M8 thread, that we're now in the process of selecting, color grading, and rendering some short motion sequences to post, along with some raw still frames. That's a big job, and our crew just traveled back to California yesterday. As Martin said - patience. We've taken care of everyone here with tons of photos and BTS video so far - and that's not stopping now! More to come shortly...

it takes time and effort to review, process, and upload stuff. it's a lot of work, actually.

i used to do a lot of camera testing at dvinfo, and i've posted a few things here, and you get judged for what you post, so let them put a strong foot forward. the folks who seem most demanding about posting footage never seem to post any of their own, so I don't think they understand the amount of work that goes into doing it -- it is a time suck, for the poster....

when RED ONE was released, there was a race to post footage publicly and some of the footage wasn't of the best quality because everyone was just learning to shoot it.

let these guys learn the features of their new camera and give us something good.

we have been fortunate to have a hungry lad like Joseph, putting his event work out there by shooting these BTS videos with such a fast turn-around. a nice bonus from Team Gibby...

I had a nose around Ketch's site, I must say I found it a completely surreal experience.

Thanks a lot for the kind words on our site Liam, lots of cool stuff coming your way ;)

The Boys and I work late last night to get the EPIC M8 Footage Done, all trimmed up and ready to go step 2 i to Edit, will do a light Grading and upload...
I usually prefer much stronger Gradings, but this are Steve Gibby's images and prefer to keep it more Natural looking, especially considering Subject ;)

Postscript:

When I had Ketch and the crew up here to Gibby Ranch, we had pretty good spring-like weather most days. But just after they had to leave with M8 for California the weather turned superb for February - 60F degrees at my ranch for three straight days. I had dreams swimming through my head about the additional cool images we could have gotten with M8!

So me and Pam went back up to Eagle Point resort, where I shot with Epic M8 last Monday (and the BTS video), and hung out, rode the mountain, and shot a ton of stills with Pam's Canon 5D. Attached is a couple of the many 5D stills I shot during these past two days. These pics are down-rezzed to the 97KB/1000 horizontal pixel limit for Red User attached JPEGs, so they obviously don't do justice to the full sized raw images. but I think you'll get the point - timing is everything - and I was dying to shoot those two additional days with M8 - but this time in my hand hand held, tracking style, with a stripped down wide angle like the Red 17-50 or Ruby 14-24. I shot these attached stills with a Canon 16-35 f2.8 MkII.

After Ketch gets the M8 things in California in order, I'll look forward to shooting some more of my style and genre footage with M8 - giant grinding slow motion waves, some wildlife, etc. I can't wait to get the new Canon mount Red is making. The thing about Epic, with its advanced features and frame rates, is it seriously tweaks your mind about wanting to re-shoot the kind of shots you do. :-)

Thanks Robert! I can't wait to use M8 to shoot nature too :-)

Last year we took some of my Red 4k wildlife footage through the Lowry processing in L.A. and output it to 65mm film for projection on a giant screen. I was super happy with the results - as were the studio executives who watched the screening. Now its time to re-shoot those same type of shots in 5k! I'm totally drooling over how those results will look - along with some inside-the-barrel 20' wave slow motion sequences, and a million other unique shots I can think of that I want to shoot. Obviously I tend to push cameras to their performance limits - I use them but never abuse them.

The shot possibilities with Epic really blow my mind :w00t:

Ha ha, it figures Steve, we were there when the weather was at its worst, beautiful shots there, yeah can't wait to do it again ;)

M8 misses you ;)

But I will make you proud of what I'll be shooting on M8 out here while you finish up your project in Utah ;)
