  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WOW! This is beautiful.

Great color rendition and great dynamic range. Can't believe how much detail there is in the snow.

What lens? Camera settings?

I wanna see this projected in 4K.

not an Editor, just a Blue filter pass thru Photoshop, in the process of learning Editing and Color Grading, but still waiting on
DaVinci and Keyboard, also so tired to do more to it, sorry ;) But felt that before going to bed, I wanted to share at list one grab ;)

Lens was a Canon 150 to 600 as seen on the pictures I posted on Recon Thread, or on Post #205 of this thread,
one of Steve's favored long range Zooms, this has a PL mount ;)

Once again, thanks to you Steve, Ketch and the rest of the guys for some amazing coverage over the last few days. I know for myself, it was as near to being there as I could have hoped. From the footage on the BTS through to the stills, you have really answered a lot of peoples questions. You guys rock!

How did you find the SSD media whilst you where shooting? For what you are doing, did you feel that 4 128GB SSD Cards was enough? Do you know about how long they hold? I know this depends on frame rate, redcode, etc.

Anyway, thanks again for all the stuff you guys have done so far, I know I really appreciate it until Epic-X ships for Stage 4 - but hey, the moneys is in the bank waiting to hand over to Jim, so I'm good to go with my Epic day later this year!

it has been a pleasure to post images and videos, and we need one more day to post the last BTS Video and Photo gallery form the Ski resort shoot.

We love the SSD Media, and 4 of them are a great start, but for most of the projects I will be involved in , will need no less then 10 64GB, 6 128GB and 2 256GB.

I shot that sequence in 5k/2:1 aspect ratio/29.97 project frame rate/overcranked to 96 fps/shutter speed 1/144th second/ISO 800/10:1 Redcode. The lens used was my stock Canon FD 150-600 f5.6L with a PL mount conversion. The guy was coming at me about 40 miles per hour as I simultaneously racked focus while slowly widened out the frame. The stock Canon 150-600 has a sliding lever on the left side of the lower lens casing. Its a great lens for tracking action with cameras like Red One and Epic. You lock on to the action, then simultaneously pan and tilt the camera with the action, while also pulling or pushing the lever to zoom, and twisting the knob on that lever to rack focus. Sounds complicated, but its quite natural for experienced sports and wildlife shooters to shoot that way. Duclos services the lens for me when it needs it - and they do a great job of it :)

Last year I shot some wildlife sequences with that same lens in 4k/29.97 on Red One, We then took that footage, took it through the Lowry process in L.A., then output it to 65mm film. It was then projected onto a giant screen for some studio executives. Their response was "Beautiful footage! What camera, and what lens?" When they were told it was 4k Red footage they were pleasantly surprised. When they were told the the lens was an 18 years old Canon FD 150-600 they were astonished. I'm sure their thought pattern was "Well, good glass always stays good glass - that doesn't change".

I've shot a ton of 4k sports and wildlife footage with that lens on Red One over the years. Its a real good match...

Thanks Steve...glad you've enjoyed the stuff we've been putting up here on Red User! We had fun as a crew :)

The SSD media was rock solid - no problems with it all week. In fact, we had no problems with the camera or anything all week for that matter. Four 128GB SSD was plenty for what we were shooting. It was setup, then start/stop, not long run times like you'd have in a straight through recorded event, or when doing interviews. If someone was to do a lot of long form programming with talent, interviews, etc., I think a couple of the 256GB SSD would be the ticket. I was shooting 10:1 Redcode at 5k/96fps that day, so as I remember the 128GB SSD still lasted quite a long time.

Question about the boot time, what was it at? Did you guys get a chance to see if the "sleep mode" was enabled?

Didn't time it exactly, but I'd estimate the boot up time to be somewhere around 8 seconds. There's no real waiting around for it to boot - it happens quickly, which I'm sure is real good news to everyone.

Didn't check to see if sleep mode was enabled - we were to excited to keep M8 awake and shooting things :)

That is great! No more lost oportunities for a great shot while I am waiting to boot-up on my Wildlife shoots!!! :thumbsup:

Looking to use Epic in a hardlined live production environment run through a switcher via the HD-SDI out on the cameras. I know you, Steve, have done something similar with the Red One cameras from reading your article on Journey in Manila.

Wondering what the latency on the live output is looking like? I've heard the SDI out is 3Gbps, is this dual link or single link? What 1080p frame rates are currently enabled on the SDI output?

Yeah, having the fast boot up is incredibly cool for sure. In fast moving shooting situations a fast boot time is critical. As good a camera as Red one is, in fast shooting situations, the slower boot up time is stressful. But Epic is a whole different story. Besides booting fast, and having pre-record, its small, light, and thus very mobile.

We were on a tight shooting schedule while we were shooting here in Utah, so we didn't get into features like time lapse. I'm a huge fan of time lapse though, and I plan to do a lot of it with Epic. Both Epic and Scarlet are designed and featured for time lapse. Somewhere Tom Lowe will be smiling big when he gets his hands on an Epic :)

All this M8 shooting was hard work for sure - but we were to excited to get tired! Just like some kids in a candy store...:)

Thanks Albert! We definitely have been having a blast :)

In the mobile outdoor production we were doing here in Utah we didn't have a need to test out the live output. We talked about maybe doing it when e got back to my studio one night - but we had posts to make, data to wrangle, and just never could get around to it.

Though I haven't tested out those features on Epic, I do expect Epic to be excellent in a hardlined EFP shooting environment. Red Team, and especially Stuart English, have posted some info on those capabilities. Yes, when I was a DP for that 10-Red camera production of "Journey Live in Manila" last year we had to hardline into an IMAG big screen above the stage, and had the director live switching the cameras for the audience IMAG view - but we were also recording the show to individual Red Drives on each of the 10 cameras. Red One's live output is 720p, but now with Epic the HD-SDI output is 1080p. I produce, DP, and shoot a lot of music productions every year, so all the EFP camera features incorporated into Epic are very much appreciated :)

The camera is now in California somewhere, and I'm in Utah, so I can't check out the HD-SDI output right now. But sometime real soon we'll check it out.

Sorry, not specifically. I intended to check it out, but the shooting and post schedule was way hectic, and I simply forgot to. What I do know is that Epic (and Scarlet) definitely have pre-record, and that I'm way a happy to have it on a camera. As you know, in certain styles and genres of shooting having a pre-record function is absolutely critical - and I work in a lot of those genres that really need it (wildlife, sports, etc.).
 
Thus accessories like the Super Grip, or other 3rd party substitutes for it, which have direct appeal to the non-hardlined EFP users, are a massive potential market for Red. I'm sure Red is listening to this feedback...

Wholeheartedly agree. Especially now that electronic lenses like EF-mount are a favoured option, a Super Grip (or some way to remote the side handle) is almost a necessity.
 
Hey Gibby or Ketch, I was wondering what your experience has been with the Epic-M needing any sort of IR or hot mirror filtration. I'm very interested to know whether or not I will be able to go without it when my X arrives, or at what point you all are finding you need it when shooting Epic (I've heard ND 1.2 and above on M-X sensor).

Thanks for taking the time to test all this stuff out and then post your results for us, you guys are awesome!

For our Utah shooting I used the new Red matte box with .3, .6, and .9 ND at times. The sensor is natively rated at 800 ISO and in my opinion that is an accurate rating. In all the bright sunlight outdoor shooting we did, I never needed more than .9 ND. The target apertures we were after were between f4 and f11, so the ND filters we had were fine. If someone was wanting to shoot side open in that intensity of outdoor light, well then yes, they may want to have an ND 1.2. I didn't notice any IR problems when we reviewed the raw footage.

BTW - I quickly exposed Epic the same way I've always exposed Red One - via zebra and histogram. I've found that's the fastest way to get accurate exposure in a mobile run and gun shooting scenario - a quick glance at the zebra pattern in the frame, then down to the histogram to make sure it verifies what the zebra is telling me, then hit record. As a longtime EFP shooter I'm comfortable with using zebra for exposing. As a longtime DSLR shooter I'm also comfortable with using histograms. So, with Epic (and Red One) I combine the two and expose via zebra and histogram.
