  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

I'll post some R3D grabs from Cayman on Dragon.
Doing Stingray City (very shallow site - 12 feet only) this Friday with Dragon for the first time U/W.
Depends on the weather though.... not so favorable the last days/weeks.
I've got tons of !@$% footage on the Epic X from Cayman if you want.... hahaha! :-/

I've got a small collection of R3D screen grabs of footage I shot at Stingray City, Grand Cayman yesterday.
It's a 12ft "deep" dive site on a sandy patch.
It was sunny, a bit of waves, a bit of surge and quite some sand particles in the water column.
I shot various positions vs the sun to see how the Dragon sensor would behave.
I didn't go for framing nor award winning images, so please don't evaluate the images (I know it's crap)... only the pixels :-))

Though hard to tell from this one not-stressful (for the sensor) dive, I do feel like Dragon is a major improvement over my Epic-X.
I will take her down deeper but not sure if I can pull it off (time wise) in the next weeks.
One thing though in RCX: you can "pull the levers" without the code falling apart....
If I "looked" at a lever on R3D shot in Cayman on the X, it fell apart real quick.
So.... major improvement there also.
Oh yes... it also looked way better down there on the monitor.
BTW: I did a single white balance at 12 ft which set 8,418K and -46.7.... the tint still feels like an awful lot.
But then again: I'm not a "colorista"! :-)

If you want to down;oad the R3Ds, send me an email to: michaelmaes(at)me.com
I couldn't find a way to get the files on RU.

Attached one file, a graded screen grab, to give an idea.
Cheers and have a great weekend!

Michael

Epic Dragon Underwater

Epic Dragon Underwater

Here are a few more touched up Dragon Sensor frame grabs. I think most impressive is the Beam Splitter housing we have been using lately and "ironically" it's getting to be much easier to wield underwater....Swimming it around is a pure pain, but load yourself up with 40lbs of weights and just walk it around on the bottom. Far easier to get around.

Hehe, Johnny - yeah, I finally found a good use for the BM pocket cam... had a Voitlander Nokton 17mm, f.95 on shooting at ISO 1600 for the low light. HDMI into a BM UltraStudio 3D Thunderbolt interface to the laptop which was streaming live using Livestream. I fucked around with it way too long and blew off a day of editing, but what the hell...
R

PS - have two BMPCC cams I'm selling, one with a Wooden Camera mini cage. Also selling UltraStudio 4K and maybe the US 3D although that ones nice for portability

Ron, wish i'd have known about the Ultra Studio 4k....while i was in San Diego, i bought the Ultra Studio Express....then upon getting it, i sent it back and bought the Ultra Studio 4k....What didn't you like about the US 4k? I've not hooked it up yet and don't particularly like how big it is, but had no other known alternatives to view 4k out to a 4k monitor using Resolve....or do you know an alternative? Dont know what the US 3d is....did not see it on BM site...?

Fellas,

Looking at UW housing again, wanted to get some thoughts on the Amphibico Rouge. Looking for a compact surface housing to shoot at the waters edge.

Thanks for thoughts.

Best. Will

Will:

Our PVC housing for the Epic is the smallest and lightest of any of the major brands. Least expensive, too at about $5500 list price.

The one I would recommend to you is about 8 pounds lighter than an aluminum housing and is still rated for 175 feet. If you truly only need water's edge protection, I have one that was damaged in shipment due to really poor packing, that would be much less expensive even than the normal price, and still fine for surf and pool work - probably deeper as well but don't want to rate it for that.

Amphibico Rouge Underwater Housing System for sale

Amphibico Rouge Underwater Housing System for sale

I've had a post in the 3rd party gear marketplace for a couple weeks, but I thought I'd include it here too since it is UW specific.

I’ve decided to sell my trusty Amphibico Rouge housing for RED cameras. It’s the best housing I’ve owned in the last 20 years, but I have only land based projects scheduled for the next 18+ months, so I can’t afford to have this much gear sitting around collecting dust. It’s a very complete system with more goodies than I’m going to bother listing individually here, but here is the big stuff. It has the 9.25” optical glass dome, the Macro port, 1.25” port extension, 2” port extension, Dive & See 7” external HDMI monitor, a custom vacuum system, the Amphibico custom pelican case and a ton of little necessities like focus and zoom gears, trim weights, viewer shades, spare o-rings and even a spare right side handle. I’ll be happy to detail everything with a serious buyer. All of this stuff will go as a package, I don’t really want to split anything out, though if you are interested in an extension ring, or the HDMI monitor, I might deal on that.

In addition to the housing system, I have a pair or Light and Motion Sola 4000 LED lights including Ultralight arms, clamps, floats and chargers that I will sell either with the system or separately. One of the Solas is fairly new, probably less than 50 dives. The other is older and has a couple hundred dives but is still in good working order.

Finally, though I really don’t want to sell my RED Scarlet-X, and I assume that most readers on this forum will already have a RED, if someone wants to buy a complete turnkey package, I can accommodate that too.

Pricing on everything is negotiable depending on how much you want to bundle together, but I’m starting at about 75% to 80% of current list price and maybe even better than that if you buy a bigger chunk of the system. I’ve had the system since Feb last year, so it is a little over a year old, but I only used in on 4 projects. It hasn’t been in the water since last October. Everything is 100% functional and has been professionally cared for in the few months of use that it has seen.

You can see samples of work from the system on my website: www.FishTalesFilms.com in the “Shot on RED” section. All of the Underwater work in that section was shot with the Rouge system.

I've also recently posted a new demo reel on my Vimeo channel of Macro UW footage shot with this system. You can view it at http://vimeo.com/fishtales/smallwonders

I will be coming to the US July 23 and I plan to bring the system with me for easier shipping (I actually have about 5 hours in LA between flights).

Interested parties please contact me at: steve@FishTalesFilms.com to discuss pricing and details.

Do you plan on such use? Usually surf housings are light weight aluminum housings or pvc. I think Mike has the perfect solution for you with his pvc housing. Bottom line is choose a housing and maximize your usage and knowledge of it....three's no prefect housing and if you are waiting for something new & revolutionary, you may find some gray hairs on you face. Do you really need to buy a housing? And do you do that much in water shooting to justify? Probably the two biggest and first questions. Since ownership of a housing only begins with the housing....get ready for all kinds of extras.....

*my comments only because i think you are shopping for a housing correct?

Correct, I am looking for a housing and have several options that reached out to me. I've made enough money in the past off UW footage/films to justify some of the expense at least and this is SD or more recently GoPro footage which is pretty archaic. A housing with our Epic Dragon gives me the opportunity to explore new territory and expands possibilities for creating. I'm not a deep water guy, shooting sea life. I'm a narrative story teller and am comfortable with surface and slightly below, using actors, animals and my unique ability to get to places few have been. There is a charm with underwater work, a joy worth sharing, makes me feel high.

So I've been waiting and watching, feeling the options now are proven and safe to make an investment relevant for several years and like you said, some very good bargains/options as a portion of the UW shooters have gone elsewhere. Most Epic UW housing are too large for me, so it's a small window I'm shopping in, 20-30 lbs. I'd love to try a demo or read some great reviews which can be spartan. Thanks for your thoughts and the challenge they present.

So Chris Bryan did the UW work for the Samsung Commercial. I am wondering if he even used an Epic for this.

Dear All,

I am a new comer the RED world. I have worked as a professional UW photographer based in the Islands of the Azores for the last 6 years.

After 2 years of exploring video with DSLR´s (mainly 5 & 7d´s) I finally bought a RED Epic mysterium X and a Gates housing. I must confess I was a bit disappointed when some of the Gates equipment I recieved had problems (the Seal check pump and a focus gear aswell as 1 control - power), however the AMAZING tech support made up for it and I had everything up and ready in a few days.

So I was planning to leave on next Thursday back to the Azores to do some footage - since I finally had all the equipment assembled and checked - but another problem showed up I was hoping someone here ca help me with.

Basicaly I cannot save my footage to my computer. I have the watchdog installed, I connect the RED Mini Mag Station to any of the 3 computers I have tried this with (my iMac, MacBook Pro and a PC), I use any of the 3 different cables (USB 3, eSATA or FireWire800) and the AC power adaptor. The red light on the station comes on, I put the MiniMag 512GB in and nothing happens. I have formatted both cards, they both record and playback on the RED. I click on the watchdog icon and it says "No Red volumes".

The only thing I can think of is I received a default station, witch is a bummer as I will have to delay my trip until I get another one. Unfortunetly I only found this out yesterday night so it is now a long wait till monday and the Bomb squad to answer my mail.

Anyone out there using the MinImags and had any problems?

Thanks, Nuno Sá

Hi Nuno,
I don't know anything about the minimag reliability, but what i will tell you is make sure you buy TWO mag readers. I have three and take two with me everywhere i go....i'm sure many others will likely do the same. Now i have NEVER had one fail, but i have had SEVERAL cables fail. So be sure to have extra cables as well. As to your problem, it sounds more likely an issue with connectivity with some sort of third party hardware. Are you using some sort of e-sata reader or other device connected to your computer? And when you say you connect the mag reader to your imac, pc and macbook pro--how are you doing this? Thunderbolt, esata, fw800 ? More issues seem to arise from new hardware and not having the proper drivers or if say you are trying to read over to a port mulitiplier hard drive bay, then you could have issues with drivers as well.....most plug and play drivers on mac seem to have issues with port multiplier hdd's....so more info would be needed. Have some pics of your setup ?
