Gates GT-Series Lights Update

Gates GT-Series Lights Update

Gates GT-Series Light Update
A note from John....

Greetings to all,

The next generation Gates underwater video lights development took a significant course change earlier this spring. We found with different LED arrays we could achieve substantially higher light output *and* a high color rendition. I’m not publishing firm specs just yet, but you can expect ~13,000 lumens with a 90 CRI. Previously you could only get alot of blue light *or* a high CRI – but not both. Gates GT-Series lets you have your cake and eat it, too.

Other GT-Series features:
· Small, compact package.
· One-handed operation, even with gloves.
· 7 Power levels, including a low power ‘driving’ mode for night navigation.
· Light Output and Fuel Guage indicators, mirrored on both sides of the light for easy viewing regardless of positioning on the housing.
· Replaceable 97 WHr. battery pack. Charge one while the other is in use eliminating down-time.
· Unique cooling design to remove heat from LED’s, leading to greater efficiencies and light ouptut.
· Multiple Mounting Options including mount balls and bracket attachment points.
· Travel Lock-Outs.
· Seal Check Option.
· Color Filter Accessory.

Of course these lights are a Gates through and through with all due measures for reliability. Prototypes are underway and will be made available to our field testers when ready.

More to follow.....

Also a fun video made entirely with Nokia Lumia featuring Fabien Cousteau, his father Jean Michel Cousteau, and famed Ocean lady Dr. Sylvia Earle.

Tom,

Not to worry, my interview for Mission 31, which is not under my name but the client's, was approved long ago, even before the mission got the final green light, so I don't need help in setting it up but it is not clear whether I'll make it on time to do it. Thanks anyway.

Yes, send me any R3Ds you can as you can, in truth, except for a few frames shot on California by Johnny Friday, I have not seen any other footage as of yet. I asked Tom Lowe to send me a few, as he had side by side footage with the F55 and the C500 but he hasn't gotten back to me as of yet, so your footage from Aquarius might be the first shot we get at properly analyzing some Dragon footage, no small feat in importance for those of us undecided on whether RED is our tool of choice for the future.

Have fun!

Hey Ryan, congrats on your Scarlet upgrade!
You know I can help you out with the rest huh ;-)
Cheers!

Hi Rudi,

I'll get you some Dragon R3Ds shot in "the dreadful Caymans" ;-)
I know where and when the issue arises the most and.... honestly... the last few weeks were favorable for the issue (meaning it would show a lot less).
I'll pm you once I shot something 'decent' :-)

Nauticam PL

Nauticam PL

Hi Will,

My company distributes Nauticam, and I have both the EF and PL mount variants of that housing.....

I've been shooting on Mission 31 with the PL mount variant adapted to the Nikon Optitek mount and I am happy to report the housing is great! There are many things I like about it especially the quick and easy change between lenses. If anyone is interested let me know and I can give you more detail.

Best,

Matt

Just wanted to give a public big thanks to Tom Hamilton for coming through in a pinch with his skills, gear, and time on Mission 31. Thanks Tom!!

The pleasure all mine Matt, thanks for the vote of confidence.

As you are about to begin your saturation mission as one of the Aquanauts, all kudos must be extended to you, for having been so instrumental in mounting this huge project, bringing it to life in such a big way. In your role as DP, I am very much looking forward to seeing the results of your creative decisions in the final piece. I have every confidence they will be spectacular!

Cheers Matt!

Dragon 6k FF frame grab

For those looking at the color rendition of Dragon, here's a nice look at how the colors really blend well in the waters of California. This is a shot taken at no more than 20' with good light. A vast improvement on the Epic 5k sensor.
Lens: Canon 8-15 shot at 14mm; ISO: 800; Fstop: 9.1

hey guys,
not 100% your field but do you guys know of any "surf" housings? Im looking for something that would work on the surface and few feet underwater, but nothing too deep. Ive seen SPL housings but its a square box with handles and I know it works well but when the surf pulls you a bit of hydrodinamic shape would help :)
so just checking if there is something else on the market...
thanks
uros

Hey guys - Ron Lagerlof sent over some Dragon footage he shot in the Caymans and Socorro Islands.. that we've been prepping for the MammothHD Libraries... here's one of the MantaRay clips (w/Clarion Angelfish - cleaning station - Socorro Islands. Mexico)

We'll be adding the Ron's Dragon footage which include Stringrays, MantaRays, Turtles, Dolphins, Hammerheads, Nurse and Caribbean Reef Sharks, Sponge Spawning and more... to the MHD Libraries - later this week.

Hi Clark
any chance of making a few r3d screen grabs available to the group for download. I am guessing if it is going to a stock agent then probably not. I am awaiting my upgrades but would love to take a look at some Cayman's grabs as this is the place that has caused the most problems for the MX sensor.

I'll post some R3D grabs from Cayman on Dragon.
Doing Stingray City (very shallow site - 12 feet only) this Friday with Dragon for the first time U/W.
Depends on the weather though.... not so favorable the last days/weeks.
I've got tons of !@$% footage on the Epic X from Cayman if you want.... hahaha! :-/

Those grabs are spectacular Clark. There's a fascinating discussion on another thread with Phil Holland, in the age of digital capture, lenses are the new film stock. I'm going to wager Ron a steak dinner in LA, that is the Z15.

No R3Ds, but here's a screen grab of RCX out of camera, no adjustments, probably one stop under exposed, but it pulls up nicely. Tom, that would be a sucker bet, but you would be right, with the exception of the manta clip which is the Tokina 16-28 Cine lens. Awesome glass!
