  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

As Mike is a good friend and business partner, I agree, a small light head out at the end of a very long arm is an ideal solution for many reasons. Down there on the Esmeralda, all those massive extensions catching dynamic sail in strong surge and current, was a cruel bitch by anyone's standards. That we got anything photographically acceptable is still a wonder.

Engineering tradeoffs being what they are, you either self-contain the light package, carry the battery packs somewhere on the housing, or pack it in in your personal body armor. Combine that with dual tank, decompression diving, it's a NASA spacesuit operation, with all the attendant risks.

Tim's light is good, but we need to go further.

Tell me about it Tom. Here is how we used to do it back in the day ;)

Thanks Tom,

I'm finally making my own underwater lights, I hope to have them under water in a month.
A hard dome port cover sounds like a music. I will send you an email :emote_happyhappy:

Ah, the Amphibicam, that was quite a rig Matt, must've been a bear to swim with.

Hey Rafa, you can reach me at redseapictures@gmail.com, the cover is very lightweight and sturdy, fits inside the existing neoprene cover if you want to use it that way, and will protect the dome from some pretty hard knocks. :emote_headwall:

Truthfully I was just hanging onto the camera for a moment for Chuck Davis the DP. But the lights were kind of a cool set up. We mounted two batteries on the back of the rebreather that powered 3 200w HMIs on an articulating handle that allowed the heads to be flooded or spotted. It had a lot of punch for a "portable" setup, when they worked :). I would love to see something similar in an LED setup for when you need all that light.

Johnny,

You work with Bob Cranston on a regular basis, using surface powered incandescents, and from what I've seen, very nice results.

Can you comment how that compares to LED technology?

Yes, we are using....surface fed lights. They have their advantages and of course disadvantages. If traveling solo, no other choice by LED really...and i do like my light-weight, small LED lights...but for MONSTER power and burn times...there's no other way to go than surface fed. But with surface fed you really need three people. Someone tending the lights & generator topside and then a lighting person. Bob & I have been pulling it off solo luckily with few problems. But you only have to ponder a few minutes to think of at least a dozen things that can go wrong. And of course not so easy to travel with....Genny, lights, cables---adds another two crates.

Hey Zeb,

thanks is for that link, very cool stuff. Tough to implement underwater though, that was an aquarium shoot with moco, cam and lighting, through the glass, plugged into the wall outlet, must've taken days to get.

Can't imagine the expense of a boat on station with surface data and power feed doing the same thing, each individual shot days in the making, weather, surge, current and tides all working against it.

Still, very inspiring, he really shows us a unique aspect few consider in all of this.

Ahhh . . . was wondering how they were able to keep stable enough to do all that focus stacking / time lapsie stuff. Looks sic! Crazy light fixtures. Wonder what they used?

Had a chance to play with bigblue 15,000 lumens light at bts diveshow this weekend..serves wreck diving well for diver models to prelight for you..weight is always a problem though..kozz

After the earthquake, here's what's left of the harbor in Iquique we were operating from on the Esmeralda shoot, no news yet if the wreck was wiped out, supposed to be back there sometime in the next few months.

Wow. Is everyone you worked with down there ok?

Hey Matt,

Yes, all the Navy divers from the project are based in Val Paraiso, the director in Vina del Mar near Santiago, so all is well. In Iquique itself, amazingly only six deaths, although 4000 families are now homeless. If the wreck is gone, then we got the last ever footage of it.

Tom,

I guess it could have been worse but it is still a tragedy. No matter how adaptable and intelligent we think we are as humans nature will always have one up on us. Pretty humbling.

They mentioned that without Chile's very strict building codes and evacuation procedures, the death toll would have been in the thousands.

Serial protocols in firmware 5.2.9

Serial protocols in firmware 5.2.9

Hello all Rouge shooters

Was going to play around with the new beta firmware release since it has support for the Nikon mount Tokina 10-17. After I loaded the firmware I went looking for the Red Serial Protocol, but I didn't see it in the menu. Am I missing something? This area of the menu seems to have changed with the addition of other remote options. I sent off an email to Joe at Amphibico asking him about the change. Hopefully it is on the radar and whatever firmware fixes needed to make the housing work with future official firmware updates are in the works.

Matt

Tom,

I believe they are standard products but need to be ordered. Don't think they are on the website.

I will ask if they can put a link up if they are wanted or if some form of group buy can be organised.

Dave

I've been sent a message from my contact @ Formatt-Hitech. Whilst these filters are not on the website they are available to order, for the time being, advise your guys to email info@formatt-hitech.com to place an order.

Price list here

O.

For all Rouge operators out there regarding the latest Epic firmware update and the serial control protocol, here is the message from Red Tech support;

Tom,

The Serial Protocol name was changed to REDLINK Command Protocol in the most recent firmware. However, the function should be the same.

Anyone experiencing issues please pm me, I am in direct comms with both Red and Aquatica/Amphibico, should not be a problem.

As always, I recommend staying away from Beta stuff, wait for final release, especially if you are being paid to get the job done.

Cheers all,

Tom

alright, gentlemen... it's about that time.

thank you guys that have sent me clips/frames for the color tutorial, i promise i'm not peddling them on the black (or blue) market ;)

what with the new olpf/color/cameras rolling out, i'm only missing the latest and greatest stuff...

i assume everybody here wants to see/share some more water-breathing dragon-action, but do let me know if anyone has or has planned something soon

in any case, it's not too late to send me something, if you do please feel free to provide relevant infos
(cam-house/location/filtration/conditions/depth/etc)

i'll be following up within about a week with some 'selects' from each person for verification, then i'll count on y'all for peer review
thanks again (:

soo... last call!

p.s. if anyone wants to send a gopro shot i may try to mix one in just for the sake of all the underwater noobs with their hands on those, plus that should help give you guys a good idea about mixing and matching in different leagues ;)
