The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

RED / GATES @ NAB

RED / GATES @ NAB

An invitation from RED to exhibit in their NAB booth is rare. So it was a privilege to have DEEP DRAGON on prominent display this past week. (Pardon the poor iPad photo)

A million thanks to our friends at Red Digital Cinema, with whom we have enjoyed a long standing relationship since NAB 2006 and RED ONE.

John

First the earthquake, now this. The Chilean Naval Museum containing a majority of the artifacts recovered from the Esmeralda is in the middle of all that, still awaiting news from the guys down there, cell phones going straight to voicemail.

Some people say 3D is dead. I say 3D is a vehicle for underwater images unlike any other.

Bob Cranston is proof. He is currently shooting a production right here off the coast of California. Most of what you saw in Water Breathing Dragon (https://vimeo.com/89966229) is 'in the can' in 3D. Ross Isaacs is also forging ahead with his own underwater efforts from Port Douglas, Australia.

For me, 3D is not dead, just quietly moving ahead for new things to come. Just sayin.....

That is a serious piece of kit. John, have you been approached by the Avatar folks for the underwater sequences of the upcoming sequels?

I agree with you John 3D is far from dead....It's awesome that Bob & John are chipping slowly away at their 3D project....more power to you guys........yes we are quietly working away behind the scenes on our own 3D project thanks to John Ellerbrock's continual support and positive energy.

Yes the Cameron/Pace guys were never really helpful in sharing information on their underwater 3D rigs. A pity really as James Cameron was so inspirational for many in regard to promoting the 3D industry they always kept their cards so close to their chests.

DEEP EPIC / DEEP DRAGON Macro port

DEEP EPIC / DEEP DRAGON Macro port

To all DEEP EPIC and DEEP DRAGON owners:

Did you know the FP80 Flat Port has an AR coated glass option? It's optically more pure than the acrylic, and the AR coating contributes to image quality with better contrast and reflection rejection.

This is a custom order item, and I am about to place an order with my supplier. If you are interested in a Glass FP80, PM or email me for details.

Note to all Rouge folks, with latest firmware, the new housing control menu selection is as below, courtesy Matt Ferraro, cheers Matt.

MENU>SETTINGS>SETUP>COMMUNICATION>SERIAL> RED Control Protocol

Something different. Here is something a bit different for this thread....not underwater, but that phase of the shoot coming soon. Here's a topside shoot from a day trip i made last week at the Bay of Loreto National Marine Park in Baja, Mexico.

Shot from a small boat (panga) hand-held (mostly hanging off the bow with a death grip on my camera) at high speed. Excuse some of the movement as it was a bit all over the place time to time. Edited in FCPx with a bit of motion stabilization via FCPx's proprietary software for motion stabilizing. All work done inside of FCPx with a few curves and mild color adjustments.

Sad to hear the news of the passing of Peter Scoones last night at home surrounded by family. As a REDUser and housing innovator he was a breed apart from most. I can only submit my greatest condolences to his family and friends, many of whom are also member of the Bubble Blowing community here.

RIP Peter.

Very sad news, an absolute legend! RIP

Currently undercover in some of the nastiest fish markets in Indo. Some appalling stuff going on. Two hidden cameras a GoPro and some DSLR's. This goes beyond fishing, there are also strong links with human trafficking and illegal fishing forays into Aussie waters...enough said. Whilst shark fishing and the subsequent shipping of the fins to Asia is not illegal here the catching of Mantas as of February this year is. No one seems to have told the fishermen, not that they give a crap anyway!

Flex_4_K_Gates.jpg

For all you 4K shooters, the arsenal just expanded. I just took delivery of the first Gates Flex 4K dive housing. Works brilliantly. Thanks, John! :cheers2:

Big congrats Tom, gorgeous housings, I see you have a pair of them, John's product is stellar. In the planning stages for a trip to the Farasan Banks on the Saudi side, my Princely connections are still good, very necessary for slaying Red Tape, that area heretofore professionally documented only by Woods Hole Oceanographic institute, just a short flight away for you; pristine, untouched Red Sea at its most spectacular, let me know if you have interest in breaking new ground. The kind you seem to excel at.

Have had a little down time since the northern Chile adventure, what with massive earthquakes, raging deadly fires, and the like, glad to be safe and sound at home for just a little bit, my ten year old daughter is more precious to me than ever. When sleep doesn't come for whatever reason, over-loaded conscience maybe, happens more often than I care to admit. But she sleeps without a care in the world, and I look in, and am content. So, I cut and paste some of my better shots over the years. Only a basic color grade, mostly done in FCPX, some in RCX, Paul and Jeff could certainly improve on them greatly, some show Rudi's magenta. But what struck me most since my involvement with Jim and Jarred's magic little camera, I have had the extreme good fortune to have worked underwater with some very accomplished shooters in some fascinating places around the world on a variety of projects.

Sometimes, I look at the body of work these guys have done, and feel like Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 Space Odyssey ape, banging helplessly on the impenetrable obsidian Obelisk, howling at the sky; so much more to learn.

So much more to learn...
