  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

I have not seen any test shots with this new OLPF, the other OLPF units are priced at 195, why the 595 price tag?

Show me, please.

Should be me. I have one on my way.
I can test it in the worst affected waters: Cayman.
I'll try to dive it around the 25th.
Next I'll test it in the Arctic.

The reason it's much more expensive is "volume": the other olpfs are made in large numbers, h2o only a "few".
Fingers crossed! :-)

Thanks for doing the test Michael, looking forward to your report

I'm wondering if you have seen much improvement between the Dragon over the MX for underwater shooting down there in Cayman with the regular olpf.

Will do so
my personal findings mx vs dragon is the problem is still very persistent but there is more latitude to correct it. Also DC2 seems to be a big improvement (thanks Graeme). But, in the worst conditions, dragon footage - as is - remains commercially unusable.
I got some h2o r3d from Sean R. And they seemed to be a big improvement so.... I took "the plunge" and ordered an h2o and 2nd dragon.
and thinking I wanted to sell all my red gear a little while ago

Just wanted to say thanks to the RED team for all your time and help at NAB. Especially want to call out Sean Ruggeri, he's a super solid guy with a great attitude. Take care of that foot!

I look forward to seeing everyone's tests of the H2O OLPF. I'll post some as well to add to the mix as soon as I get it in my hands.

Was hoping there would be announcement at NAB and we would be able to buy the UW OLPF. Sean, any updates on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Also very interested in the H20 OLPF results, it would make me upgrade to Dragon. So far the value of upgrade simply doesn´t justify it, and higher ISO, DR or Res isn´t realy that signifant compare to waht we already have. Actually I just bought the Sony FS7 as a B camera for less than the value of the upgrade from Epic X to Dragon. However if the OLFP does deliver nicer blues and get rid of Magentas it would be a must have.

Really looking forward to seeing Michael's test results and hearing impressions. I've had a video edited for awhile now showing some of my initial test results from the first shoots with H2O in Cayman, it just kind of got pushed with the other mountainous responsibilities and efforts of our annual NAB undertakings. But we're trying to get that posted publicly ASAP. With a number of H2O OLPFs currently out in the wild floodgates should be open now though. Can't wait to see what folks come up with when it comes to underwater imaging with H2O OLPF and DRAGONcolor 2 combined!

Thanks for the kind words Matt, that is really appreciated. It was great chatting with you brother! So good seeing a lot of you out at NAB. And thanks for your patience and understanding with my less than speedy "dancing shoes" lately ;)

In a follow up, just wanted to say, having worked with Matt on the Sudan shoot, our visit to Conshelf II, and all of the very unusual travel requirements that entailed, what a pleasure it was to work under Matt's direction. We got pretty much everything we needed, should make a very respectable 'fill' for everything Matt and Fabien are trying to accomplish with the Mission 31 movie.

Saving the oceans is no small task, if anyone is up to it, then Matt and Fabien are the ones.

Off to the Bora Bora lagoon and parts beyond shortly with H2OLPF, and latest Dragon firmware, will post results as I get them.

Best to all on this thread, keep it coming,

T

Does anyone know if the Redmote will be able to control the new Weapon camera as currently the Deep Atom, Deep Dragon housings relies on the Redmote to control cameras?

The iPhone Foolcontrol is an elegant solution for topside but we still have the challenge of this kind of control on underwater housings particularly the Deep Atom and Deep Weapon if we upgrade to Weapon cameras. Although I bet John Ellerbrock and his amazing engineers at Gates Underwater Products has something up his sleeve.

RedMote is a no go with Weapon.

You need to house an iPhone and FoolControl. :)

No wifi underwater. I have a wired solution for foolcontrol iOS -> camera CTRL direct. But not sure about touchscreen underwater and the cable I have is an 'entreprise' solution only and not available thru app store unfortunately because of some Apple restriction.

I'm in contact with John at Gates so...

Wifi works just fine inside of an underwater housing, it just doesn't go very far outside of it.

No RedMote with Weapon confirmation to me was from a Bomb Squad Rep, as with everything else RED, subject to change.

Does anyone in South Florida have an H2O OLPF in their hands? I'm wondering if I could snag it, and replace it with a brand new one tomorrow.

Mine is on a FedEx truck, scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Unfortunately (well, Fortunately!) I'm diving in the morning.
