Cool guys -- thanks for explaining, as I was genuinely curious. And quite awesome that you have no need to rent. I find it hard to believe Red won't somehow accommodate in win-win fashion, as they always do.

How does one go about putting in a deposit for stage 4? How much is the deposit?

(I am a non-owner)

Just curious as we really only ever hear about the more expensive Epic M and Epic-X for people who already own reds.

(STAGE 4: Purchase EPIC S35 Brain

Available to RED ONE camera owners that were invoiced by RED or completed the official RED ownership transfer process after May 22, 2010 ( as well as all non-RED ONE owners)
Cost is $28,000 for 1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount.
Will begin shipping once all Stage 3.5 orders have been notified they are ready for delivery. You must take delivery within 30 days from notification that your order is ready for delivery . Notifications go back to the order of date/time order placed.)

We have made the $5000 deposits for stage 2.

Russ

Cool, but to answer your questions. It was made clear long ago that even if you upgrade to M-X, the trade in value would stay the same and it would be up to you to make back the difference thru business or rentals. With the delays
this has been quite easy for all of us. In fact, I mafde more $ with the M-X than any camera I have ever owned and still rent it every single week.

That said, I am not aware that you can cancel Stage 2 and move into Stage 3. The terms of the Stage 2 that we all agreed to state that if you cancel, you will get your FULL deposit back, but your R1 is already executed... and you go to the back of the line.

It would be an even more logistical nightmare than they already have on their hands with this INSANELY GENEROUS trade-in offer to then accommodate people changing their mind and go to Stage 3.

Besides, it was mentioned that Stage 2 has slightly more in the package than Stage 3. Now that can change, but that was the incentive when the program was announced.

(Along with the equally insane $2,750 M-X SENSOR REBATE towards Stage 2 Price as well )

I think having MX does not change the price for stage 3...for stage 2 there was I recall an extra discount for who had done the MX upgrade, something like 1250 usd...or near this amount.

Depends on demand, RED OWNERS get priority for delivery for the stages. The one exception to that is EPIC-M program, Non-RED owners can purchase an EPIC-M immediately.

I'm sure there's a handful of us that will give RED money for an Epic-X at 2011 pricing and can wait at the end of the line with everyone else.

Speaking personally, I'm not a renter. The PL mounts for my R-1s were never used and were immediately changed out for Nikon mounts.
Same here. I don't want to pay $2,000 for a PL mount I don't need. I do need an electronic Nikon mount, however. If I find myself needing a PL mount some day, I will buy one then.

I noticed that some people are slipping in "Nikon mount" into the suggested swap.. Please remember that at this time, only the Canon mount is in beta. So if you are looking to swap the Nikon mount, there's a strong possibility that you may end up waiting a few months longer, and I am not too sure where RED is on that one.

Just sayin

Jay

PS Perhaps they announced the Nikon Mount and I missed it.. If so please inform. BTW it's been my experience that the electronic Nikon Mounts are considerably tricker and take longer to make than Canon... Just wanted to throw that out there.

I'm well aware of that; not sure of others.

Yes, I agree. I was thinking I would only get a Scarlet at first, but now I have my eyes on the Epic-X. I would be more than OK with getting deposit in early to secure the 2011 price even if meant a long wait. Unfortunately, the 2012 price increase will put the Epic-X out of the range that I can afford. That would be really disappointing. I hope it works out.

Jay, yes. But like Petri I would wait also. Hoping at least an inexpensive dumb mount would be available during the wait but if not, then I shoot next year instead of late this year. I've already pushed my plans forward, so I have learned acceptance.

But at one time Jarred said he expected the Nikon mount to be ready by late August. That was before the latest on having to go to the Titanium mount for stability, so that may no longer be operable. Whatever the case, I'm glad of the change because I want that rock solid camera and lens fusion.

To address the mount questions....

We can't commit to a trade in program yet.. we have to wait for the mounts to be complete and into pre-production before we can asses the cost relationship between the packages and make sure it is something that is viable to offer for no charge or a small up charge fee.

Regardless of the cost.. the Canon and Nikon Mount will not be ready by the time the Epic-X program begins, so unless people want to take delivery without a mount the PL will be the only choice for a short time when we start shipping.

And yes we are exploring a dumb Nikon Mount.

PL mount is something that one needs to have together with Canon mount in most cases, unless you have multiple RED cameras.

The question is how easy is to flip the PL to Canon or vice versa?

When you run out of resolving power on your lenses and only MPs will do, you will rent MPs more often that you think, believe me.
Don’t forget we are dealing with 5K camera here and once you need this sharp, full of details, wide angle shot, well you are going to rent MPs

Thanks Jarred, listening to the suggestion and even just looking into it is extremely cool of you guys and more than we should expect.

I think you are making some generalizations about how people will use their cameras. I will not be using PL lenses on my EPIC. I also don't rent.

Yes, I don’t need PL mount, especially underwater. Right?
Well, my mount screws are getting tired from swapping by now.
I don’t know how it happened. Maybe if I knew that there is no other option.

To change a mount it is 4 screws and about 15 seconds...
