  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

shut up and shoot that Scarlet

Great thread! I'll have to post some of my work soon!

A lot of people complain about what the scarlet doesn't do, but the reality is that the final image in a lot of features and shows that shoot on Epic is a 4k extraction from the 5K image. So technically most features that you're seeing on the big screen are cropping down to what you're shooting on the Scarlet, and in some situations (like Elysium) even less. Think about that. It's pretty cool.

Yeah, I've been wondering about this, just like Fincher seems to do it, basically, you frame on the monitor for 2:40 for example, and by doing that, you extract the resolution represented by this area, right?

E'ry buddy so good! Here's my lil demo reel I threw together. Mostly Scarlet stuff. I love this camera.

Most films on Epic in 5K have been shooting the full frame 5K, framing for a 2.40 4K extraction and using the extra room to stabilize and reframe in post.

And to add this, movies are still being shot on Arri Alexas, right? Remember what the resolution is? ;)

That being said, i wish everyone would protect 4k for future releases. It's a bit sad to know that lots of movies will not get a fantastic 4k-remaster, even movies from last year.

I often say the same about films and shows shot in lower resolution. They can up convert but it's not the same. I've used an Alexa before and I really don't see the appeal of it. You can get just as pleasing of an image on higher resolution cameras if you shoot it right. I see a lot of films in the theatre and they look soft on the big screen.

@Vladimir,

thank you.

These were all graded in Speedgrade - I used a REALA 500D lut as a base and then just did corrections and pushed the images towards whatever "look" I was going for.
I often use an output lut to settle in all my adjustments.
