  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

September 7 Update

V-Raptor is already 30-40Wh higher than DSMC2 approximately, at least that's what we've been told as of now. Not scared by that. But it's something I do need to develop some strategy towards.

This scares me quite a lot... With a 150wh battery I manage to shoot around 2 hours with my Monstro. It's handy when shooting run n gun or with a water housing but I wish I can suck more of it... On a Sony F55, a 150wh last forever...
Having to swap batteries let's say every 60 or 90mn would become problematic especially when shooting in the water.
I'm stuck to 150wh because of travelling and airlines regulation... Travelling with bigger batteries would be too complicated, stacking 2 x 150wh together would make my water housing too heavy...
 
Hi Vincent. Im on your side & probably in the same place as you know we both shoot in & around the water. Me with my Epic Weapon DSMC2. My housing is Dave Kelly custom housings. one shoulder housing to shoot off a jetski & one to swim with. So with the Raptor, questions to be asked is the power & for me as my eyes need a EVF, so what are the options?? I just sent a letter off to Dave Kelly stating the Raptor is 1/3 smaller is size so I would probably need to get a new custom housing created x 2. Re the EVF - nothing stated by RED but it looks like we would need to purchase a EVF like the Zacuto Kameleon but would need to D-Tap the power. (how much power would it draw??) Re power/BATTERIES i use the PAG 150's piggy backing them - and yes we both have that problem with the flight travel issue with us only allowed to travel with two of those. (unless you have friends that can carry extras) I do sometimes smoke screen the security by having two on the camera, have my camera in the housing to take on board as hand luggage and have 2 more in my backpack, plus a stack of 98 WH's. On my EW i get up 3 hours on my 2 150 WH. The other question is how hot will the Raptor get?? In places like Hawaii/Tahiti & even in Australia if the camera is in the housing if Im on a jet ski the camera gets extremely hot and eventually shuts down. I pray that the Raptor will stay cooler.. So im excited but im not in any rush.

...aaand swapping media is no concern for you? I'm just wondering, because I was quite surprised as I saw the open media lid for the first time - showing only one card slot - on a camera with such a high data rate. (you'd probably have a meltdown inside your UW-housing with 2 card slots in such a small camera body :shocked: )

600Gb would be a nightmare.
With Monstro, the Longtake 2Tb makes my job easier whatever the shoot is: water action in a feature film, long surf session or 3 dives a day.
I don’t see myself shooting again with less than 2 Tb in my camera but for now, it will be the only option.
My post yesterday was much longer, I mentioned media, accessories (as Tim did with the EVF), etc… Then I realized the problem I will encounter with the ST is the same I had a decade ago with the Red One. It took me 18 months to get an EVF then 16Gb cards where not convenient at all for my job, etc…
Thing is my DSMC2 set-up is so complete right now, I don’t feel at all going through the «discovering» process again, buying gear, swapping it, etc… We’ll see when Raptor ST lands in a few weeks what options show up then… Maybe I totally switch to DSMC3, maybe not…

Do we know how many mins of 24fps 8K footage we can shoot on 1TB card (HQ MQ and LQ )?

That's exactly what I tried to say...better use your proven gear for about two more years and check during that time when it'll be worth the upgrade to the latest lineup and accessories.
(let's hope that the supply chain issues no longer exist by then)
And it's not just about the on-camera accessories - many will have to replace/upgrade their peripherals/computer as well due to the higher data rates. 300 vs 800MB/s will make quite a big difference, I guess.
So, yeah, I'm curious about the recording times, too, but it's almost obvious that you can't even record half as long as you're used to (with the same memory card volume). As you said, V-Raptor is a whole different beast.

Anybody else confused on how in the production pack the pogo is sending feed and power to both the handle rec button, and the monitor (without having usb-c connected to display)? Theres no pass-thru to handle or display that I can see on the top of the touch 7" base.

Also, I guess we can assume future DSMC3 EVF will the wired thru usb-c from the monitor base?

Truly don't know yet because that's a 3D rendering. Clearly the cable hasn't been included in the rendering and we haven't seen anything regarding how that start/stop button works in the real world.

I'm extremely curious about whatever ends up being the DSMC3 EVF. Importantly I want to be able to drive both the DSMC3 7.0" Touch and the EVF. There are times where I only want one or the other, but on set I use both and want both. The XL with the forward facing SDI also is interesting. Makes me wonder if it's going to be a USB connection or SDI connection or both.

Right now, it's a mystery until we see anything about it.

The image you posted of the base shows an ‘ATTACH TRIGGER’ zone where you have the pass-thru start / stop pogos available for the KOMODO side handle connection…

Good point, I saw that too. As Phil mentioned, it looks like the render isn’t complete will all those extra bits yet. Same as with how the display connects its own pass-thru. From what you can see in the prod pack render there’s just a “non smart” (for lack of a better term) 15mm rod. Will be interesting to see how that works without usb-c cable per the website description.
 
Well, looks like the description is a bit decieving. I believe the pan/tilt-arm is a purely mechanical accessory as it clearly states in the tech specs under "Camera Communication" - Power and Communication via RMC (usb-c) cable. BTW, you can see that the tilt arm has a gap that enables you to mount/unmount the arm or tighten the friction screw on the panning base...
Direct Pogo connection is not as practical as the new wired (recessed plug) design when you want to mount the monitor further away from the camera body. Let's hope that the "RMI" cable has USB-C standard pinout...

Just an example of how I dance the dance with DSMC2 cameras and why I'm curious how I'll dance the dance with DSMC3.

Currently I use "cableless" DSMC2 displays to the fullest on that concept. The 7.0" Touch has knurled bolts for quick release and attachment. I have added the Wooden Camera base to both my 5.0" as well as my EVF to perform similar tasks.

How I'm thinking about the new DSMC3 stuff is I'll be using the 15mm rod to deattached and attach the display a lot while leaving the pogo base on the body. That is fine by me, but that also means I'll be plugging and unplugging that cable a lot. Not a big deal, but just on my mind. I know nothing about the EVF, but hoping it has a quick form of attaching and removing. I'm pretty cool with the 15mm rod support for the tilt and pan mount as that really freaking common and allows you to put the monitor anywhere you need it. It's also alarmingly similar to how I've been driving my Komodo most of the time since it's release.

One thing on my mind is how I store and travel with the 7.0" Touch. I know my current case configuration likely won't do. Not a big deal, just know that I built my case for how the DSMC2 fit to a pretty tight tolerance. The pan/tilt arm that I believe lives on the display will protrude outward more than the folding DSMC2 neck. By how much and if it's an issue, unknown as of yet.

Only thing I know I'll be doing is grabbing extra cables. Any cable I use on a shoot I have 2-4X of them on standby, just in case. I'm actually pretty cool with this particular cable direction as it's still pretty fast and flexible and hopefully still minimizes gack on the camera. DSMC2 did that incredibly well, but it lacked flexibility on repositioning. One of those maybe there isn't a perfect way for every rig scenarios I imagine.
 
Sure, both systems have their pros and cons. I just found it a good move from RED to convert the pogo to a (hopefully) common standard cable within the monitor interface. (easier to find anywhere on earth than a proprietary pogo adapter cable)
(...but you're right, it's much safer to bring a couple of spare cables with you...)

Ya misleading, miswritten, or something intentional we have yet to see. “It also boasts the latest generation pogo pins to provide power and video to the monitor in addition to the ability to connect via a single-locking USB-C style DSMC3 RMI Cable for video and power.“

Being able to detach is very important, was done in DSMC2 with the pogo to pogo cable, while I hope RMI has a longer than 3’ possible distance, unlike the pogo extender, I am looking forward to the 15mm mounting option as a bit more common functionality.
 
I feel like I’m an outlier here but I use EF lenses (mostly sigma) quite often to control focus, and remote focus via the latitude system. I find it works pretty well for very compact, travel and gimbal work. Does V-Raptors control work with latitude? I know there is no control port and an accessory is needed, but will the Latitude and Raptor work together? The Red control is cool and when I had a Komodo we used a couple iPads for EF lens control (which wasn’t terrible, but not ideal either). I would love to see a tactile, mechanical remote focus hand unit that worked with Red Control as an option. But I’m hoping my Latitude units will still be usable.

Similar question here about Redlink protocol on V-Raptors being compatible with RT-Motion'sLatitude or C-Motion to pull focus on EF lenses through internal motors... As far as I know Komodo still doesn't work with latitude to focus EF lenses.
I use this all the time on my Gemini and it works great, would be very sad if that option was gone...
 
Will we be getting a heads-up if the price of the Komodo does indeed increase?
