A quick 4K story.

The "cheap" movie theater in our town has 4K projectors. You notice it is sharper, but not mind blowingly so, just slightly. I have been going to this theater for over a year, then went to the "good" movie theater. Most of their screens are 2K, my gosh they look just out of focus. I could not believe how dull 2K was in comparision.

So the point, 4k is like upgrading to a new computer, you notice it is slightly faster, then you get used to it and it seems normal. Then you boot up your old machine which was good enough at the time. My lord is that thing slow! The new machine blows it away by leaps and bounds.

4K is like that, you don't really see the huge difference until you are forced to go back.

ISO is the future since pixel resolution is now a given.

Low ISO is what's making me sell my PhaseOne equipment in favor of lower resolution next gen equipment since the Phase dictates that I use a tripod when I want to handhold and gives me too much noise which, when removed, softens the image. Please make sensitivity a priority in Dragon. Not having to travel with lighting equipment allows flexibility and creativity and certainly makes for lower cost, less invasive productions.

+1 on that.

Christian, which movies are you actually watching there in 4K? As far as I was aware Dragon Tattoo was one of the first and only mastered in 4K...

Feel free to offer a 'third way' as well. If it's not already in the cards I would like to be able to at least shoot 24p in 6k. Even if it cost an extra $1k-$2k. I don't need Epic Framerates and compression but a teensie tiny bit better would be worth a premium.
+1 for that. Or at the very least 24fps 5K to get a true 4K out.

It is just wrong model Christian - you will see the huge difference when RED finally release one (could possibly be a 6K at that day)

There have been quite a few mastered in 4K. According to IMDb, The Amazing Spider-Man was mastered in 4K, the 3D obviously wasn't projected in 4K. I could be wrong, but i think the 70mm IMAX blow ups were from 4K masters. But there are more than just Dragon Tattoo Mastered in 4K.

There have been a ton of movies mastered and released in 4K.. not just shot on RED but film scanned at 4K and mastered. Dragon Tattoo was not the first and only. .. And not only the new Spiderman, but way back with Spiderman 2 , almost 10 years ago now, was shot on 35mm&65mm film, scanned in 4K, DI 4K and projected in Digital 4K.

Jarred,

Do you guys offer screenings of the 4k films shot on RED at the studios in Hollywood?

Some great memories I've had as a Red owner are from actually going to Red Studios Hollywood for the occasional event focusing on movies and post production that shot on Red. Also great to meet people during Reducation open houses. Nice to put faces to names, even nicer now working with a few of those folks.

But, easily the best part is actually viewing the material in 4k there. Little teaser trailers, featurettes, and whatever else they put up there.

When you see your own work projected in 4k it really is a breath taking experience.

Very Interesting... Thanks for the info, Jarred. I wish this information was easier to come by and advertised by theater chains just like 3D. It would defiantly influence where I chose to see certain films.

... is anyone else feeling the need for some built-in ND's inside this camera?
