  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sensors...

Shouldn't matter when or where you bought it. I would suggest a proper transfer though when taking ownership. Epic M owners also get first dibs on the new sensor upgrade.

Don't have time to read through all the posts and not sure if this has been addressed but are there any limitations when upgrading to Dragon if you are a second hand Epic X owner? I ask because we are currently in the market for a used Epic X, just want to know if there will be any limitations when Dragon is available? Will it matter what stage of Epic X you have second hand? Jim?

Thanks in advance.

I think this 6k sensor is going to be much cooler then I expected, based on some recent tests i have been doing with 6k deep pixel compositing. Basically it reminds me more of old school painting, where you are putting layers of particles in a pigment binder ... so it's more layers of particles then a single layer of pixels. Anyway, gives kind of a pre-1700th century painting feel where a 2d plain have a 3d view effect. This also "holds up" fairly well when it is composited down to 2k, still giving off a look that I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy. Hopefully red will release some 6k r3d's for people to play with. 6k deep pixel compositing though is super slow, it really need's some cuda acceleration(some of my composits are taking 1 minute per frame). I'm really now looking forward to 6k, especially with the deep pixel openexr additions. I'm sure the ILM guys have known this for a long time, one of the reason for the openexr standard's upgrade that was done recently for deep pixels. Will revolutionize vfx and motion picture compositing, giving a huge increase to the immersive "feel" of a movie.

I wish they would give an update of upgrade path of Dragon would be?

Since the Dragon thread was closed, is there any new info on how the Dragon is shaping up for a 2012 release? Surely, you can release a Dragon sensor after the year of the dragon? :)

Epic and Scarlet are good as they are - why do we need more? Have you all used all the functions the camers provides already to you and you think it's not enough? It's still the talent of us people behind the camera that tells a story, not the camera alone that we use. Thanks to RED, ARRI and Sony - all Brands do good things and you can't do every job with always the same type of camera, so we need them all.

Why do we want more? If RED shovels more pixels over us we hold out our hands... Pretty easy.

Hoping for better low light sensitivity. if buy/rent master primes i am cool, but it's slightly more money than a 6k upgrade. and i like dragons.

It has already been said, numerous times, that Dragon looks better at 2000 ISO than MX does at 800.

This is a fair point. To a large extent, I agree. However, RED's cameras apart from the R1 are DSMCs. They are still cameras as well as movie cameras. A movie doesn't need as much resolution as a print, so 4K is probably no more than you need for cinema projection. However, extra resolution allows you more freedom to crop the image, e.g. you want a different aspect ratio, or you want tighter framing.

Also, an 8K sensor will give you a better 4K image than a 4K sensor will. :-)

I don't believe it is a case of more for the sake of more: this is still a developing technology, (and art form), and it is a bit premature to claim that having more will be too much, or overkill. Taking history into account, I think it healthy to assume that with new tools, there are those who will show us new things, or old things in a new light.

And the future is long.

Personally, I have a very specific need for a sensor that will fetch me 4096 tall and wide. The closer I can get to that, the better. Exceed it? One can dream.

Who would ever need more tha 64K of computer memory?

It can't be said too many times. 2000 ISO meta data or 2000 ISO native sensor?

Random question...not trying to be obnoxious here but is there any kind of timeline we can expect a price or specs on the Scarlet upgrade path? It would be nice to be able to make plans. I know we probably have PLENTY of time before it gets here. I'm still considering an Epic as an option but really want to see what the Scarlet will do with an upgrade to see if I need to spend the extra money. RED team? I understand if this goes un answered...figured it's worth a try.

Wont be till closer to the end of the year.. For Dragon to drop into Scarlet takes alot of work.. alot of new boards to handle the increased data rate.
