  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x internal 120FPS test

jarred, was this recorded to cf cards, or a drive, or with some kind of engineering setup?

hannnn, this scarlet gonna kill camera market of all brands -___-
AWESOME!!!

Ted was doing a Q and A online at NAB, and I asked about it, and it has the back-burner now(2/3 interchangeable)... :'( thats what im waiting for...fixed lens is sweet and all, but...yeah I want some prime lenses on that puppy! :D :D

I'm a bit sceptical of the market for this version of Scarlet. The technology is advancing, looking back just 4 years the specs for the fixed scarlet would have made headlines on regular newspapers if it were released back then. So thinking about how long it will take for it to make it to the market after both Epic-M, X, S, Scarlet fixed, Red Ray, lenses, maybe a new version of red rocket, 4K projector, 28K supercamera, monstro sensor etc. there's so much in development that when all those are done the price for a s35 FF 4K or 5K camera in the same style as Scarlet would be a better option. I also think that the market for a camera that make use of peoples own lenses (like canon lenses) will be better off then having special lenses for it that would never be used for anything else then that camera. The Scarlet fixed would still be in use then, because the only reason I can see of why the Scarlet cinema should be used is to get a little more light into the lens and a shorter DOF, the scarlet fixed gives the photographer the ability to actually focus in difficult situations.

I would understand if Red didn't continue down this path and get rid off this version because I really don't see the market for it. Epics, Red One MX, Scarlet Fixed is alot of options.

I would understand that too...but I PRAY they do not discontinue this...Because this is exactly what I need...The epic x or epic s would be nice, but the scarlet is what I need. And they have marketed the scarlet fixed and cinema since 2007 or 2008... Plus they had the mini primes on display at NAB this year...I really really hope they release it!

Well, for your sake I hope they continue with it. But are you sure the Epic-S isn't a better option? It's more future proof :)

Yeah, well, at the current moment, for a startup camera, I cant afford most PL glass atm... those miniprimes would be spectacular. for the price. Once i get a bigger (better paying) client base, Ill pic up the epic x ;)

What about 3D work? It will be the lightest and cheapest Red-camera of them all to do 3d work with. Perhaps 3D isn't THE future, but it very well might be one of them. Another aspect is the ability to use quality lenses. Yes the Fixed got a killer lens, but in one of the tests, it showed chromatic aberration. I won't spend $15-20.000 on a camera with chromatic aberration if I can't change the lens. It might never become a problem, but it could. Another aspect is the fixed lens, if you do break it or drop it - God forbid it - you're pretty much fucked. I think this camera is perfect for many many people. But some people might also have other needs.

Considering that 16mm film and S16mm film have been shot alongside 35mm for about 100 years now, and 2/3" which is a 16mm sized frame is still by far the most popular general purpose pro video production format on the planet I don't think the Scarlets in either flavor will be obsolete for a very long time.
Scarlet Cinema, the 2/3" interchangeable model, accepts the full range of lens mounts available for Epic, PL, Canon, Nikon, plus C-mount, B4 HD mount, and mini-PL Red mount. I plan on using a range of vintage 16mm film camera lenses all converted to PL mount for mine, but it will accept S16mm lenses, B4 HD lenses as well.
For many shooting styles and production genres the smaller format is still a better choice and while you can shoot an Epic in 2k crop format with 2/3" 16mm glass, Scarlet will have better resolution at that image size.

The greatness of RED comes from that the company is led by people who are able to see further than the tip of their own nose. They are able to see that there are other use cases than what they need themselves.

In many situations, size and weight is very important. An Epic with a PL lens is just out of the question, and even one with a still lens is too bulky. There are also situations where interchangeable lenses is a must, no matter how good the fixed lens is. If you need to use rings, bellows, or tilt in a very cramped space, the Scarlet Cinema is just the thing - and it does not have any serious competition. You really need a raw format if quality is critical, so motion SLRs will not do.

You might be right on that. At least the best part of 2/3 is the ease of focus pulling. The hunt for 35mm DOF seem to hit peoples heads when they realise how hard it is pulling focus when operating the camera at the same time.
But I still think that the Scarlet cinema will have a hard time. The magnifying of the image when using a 35mm lens will be alot so there won't be alot of wide shots with it. I believe that because the Scarlet fixed is going to give most people the best options and ease of use that a 2/3 camera can give them and that the Scarlet cinema might be a middle step too much, but I might be wrong.
Hopefully they complete it to, but I understand the reason for it to be put on hold... I think it's the least of their priorities right now.

But you can use the Epic-S with canon lenses, still photography lenses. They even have some things the PL doesn't, like the mechanical focus with the rack focus ability that they showed here a few days ago. And of course the Epic-S is the old Scarlet s35, so it's not in the same price range as Epic-X

a lot of people are extremely interested in the 2/3 interchangeable, but it's not one for everybody. just like the scarlet fixed isn't for everybody, nor the -s or -m or -x versions of epic. different hats for different jobs

For me the biggest draw back to 35mm is the quantity, size and weight of lenses needed to cover the range of a single wide range 16mm zoom lens. For a nature day hike for instance I can mount an Angenieux 12-240 f3.2-4.8 zoom that covers the FF35 equivalent range of 45-900mm with one lens. The entire Scarlet setup including tripod ready to shoot will weigh about the same or less than the 35mm lenses alone and I don't have to worry about exposing the sensor to contamination from changing lenses. Now the Angie is a fully manual lens, no auto anything, but it can be fitted with motors and gears if I feel the need. I would mostly use it as a variable prime, so they aren't really necessary. It is a lot smaller and easier to handle than say an 800mm Canon lens.
The image quality might not be quite as good as more modern lens designs, but hey, if it was good enough for Kubrick to shoot his outdoor scenes in Barry Lyndon with it is good enough for me and a Scarlet.
I'd love to have one of each, a Scarlet fixed and a Cinema. But I would prefer the Cinema to start with as I can cover an FF35 equivalent range of 11mm to 900mm with lenses I already have.

Will the HDRx feature be suitable for the Scarlet in more situations as opposed to the Epic since has got more stops?

Freakn' AWESOME camera test! Absolutely love it!

Wow, what a speed test!

Dan "the man" Duran, my best support as Video assist, that´s a luxury.

Congrats team.
