SALT VV - VistaVision Lens Shootout

Thanks fellas

Thanks fellas

Phil, Matthew, Evin and Matt,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the work you did and the info we now have.

Guys fantastic job! Thank you for your hard work. And now I have to say one thing. I've never seen the lens as good as Otus in my live. Every review I've found on the internet saying literally "the best lens", "sharpest lens" etc. I've never seen something like this on any lens. Image quality from those looks absolutely stunning and that's on the internet where its compressed by YT etc. I wanted to buy Canon still zooms but shit, these Otus look like they are from another planet :)

The Leica M lenses have too steep an exit angle for the Dragon microlens design. This produces a noticable purple vignette on everything wider than 50mm. For this reason they were omitted from the VV portion.

Is this the same on all olpfs?

Seriously, this test and subsequent thread is beyond helpful and insightful. I've been going back and forth about what cinema lens set would be the most ideal for my Monstro, or if I should simply not purchase anything yet. Thank you to all involved for using your resources to help us other redusers make a more educated decision. Where's the tip jar on this thing?!?

I'm so thankful for all this info. It really helped me make my decision on a lens upgrade. We ended up moving from Zeiss ZF.2 to Sigma Cine.

Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure Leica R r vista vision compatible. I'm getting mine converted with PS technik in Germany to cine housing.

Looking for advice -- I have Helium sensor and considering both Sigma and Tokina PL lenses. I did demo both, and they each have pluses and minuses. The Tokinas are beautifully made, no breathing, no chromatic, but big, heavy, and a little more expensive. The Sigmas are sharper wide open, some breathing, a little chromatic but small/not too heavy and smooth turning focus for hand held. I am switching from Nikon mount to PL to accommodate the Revolva, which is really great but having a tough time deciding between these two. I am also going to use the "Rod Claw" single rod and the Wooden Camera follow focus designed for single rod use. I mostly use a tripod but need to carry the lenses to locations (heavy case with the Tokinas) and do some handheld and also use the Steadicam Air, which is also great and will support either setup. I don't see myself going to Monstro anytime soon, and either covers Helium/full frame but would get the Tokinas if for sure was going Monstro. If you have a set of either of these and use with Helium what is your opinion please? Thanks!

I ended up getting the Sigma 7 lens set, very happy with my choice. The lenses are very sharp when you want them to be, but with beautiful transitions to out of focus, great color, consistent throughout the set, and a very nice feel in the hand.

I have the current set of Tokina VV primes: 18, 25, 35, 50 and 85. Was expecting announcement of 135mm but that turned into 105mm. Disappointing.

Sigma offers longer range (albeit with slight aperture compromise at 14mm and 135mm) and smaller/lighter.

You need to see for yourself whether 180° focus throw vs 300° is a feature or a bug. 300° is great for motor-based focus. Not so much if using wrist.

I bought Tokina for my Monstro. No regrets there. But for Helium only, a much more difficult choice. Lots of Sigma users very happy.

Forgive me if this has been answered already, but has anyone compared the Sigma stills lenses to the cinema versions? Noticeable difference?

I already own the 18-35 stills lens and love it, and because this is for personal projects, I'd only consider spending more on the cine lens if you can see an improvement on the screen as well as mechanically.

Also thank you for these tests they have been invaluable for me choosing my next lens purchase!

Optically they are the same. Same glass, same coatings, no difference in image. Only the housing has changed.

Sigma and helium gets way too clinical/plasticy for my tastes, but right for certain looks I suppose, modern sharp contrasty lenses and super small pixels

Haven’t used the tokinas
