  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SALT VV - VistaVision Lens Shootout

Not to be pedantic, but any modern sharp lens on Helium has the potential to look "plasticy" - not just the Sigmas.

FWIW my typical approach is to pop on a 1/4 HBM for high key scenes and shoot clean for low key, darker stuff - with the option of having someone like Jake take the edge off if it's still too unreal looking. YMMV.

Cheers - #19

Optically they are the same. Same glass, same coatings, no difference in image. Only the housing has changed.

I have a whole bunch of Sigma ART stills lenses as well as a set of Cine Primes. I use the ART lenses when traveling run and gun and on the Movi Pro or other light set ups. In these situations I use the Latitude for focus with very satisfactory results. Also the ART set has lenses the Cine set doesn’t, like 12-24 (it covers VV) and 24-70. Optically they match.

Interested if anyone has compared these to the Tokina vista primes to the Zeiss Otus set.

Phil, does Schneider 18mm cover FF VV or 8K HD cleanly?
And have you used them on Helium sensor as well?
And what happened to the 135mm lens? Anybody knows?
Thanks
I love those Otus lenses but I took a second look and my god those Xenons FF look gorgeous! I love their flares and like their look more the Sigma's and Tokina's. And the same lengths of all lenses is super cool and very very time saving. I hate when a set of lenses differs in length. Will there be more Xenons coming? (hope for 14mm T2.4 with the same length) :)

And what about OTUS vs XENON FF for nature/landscape shooting? What resolves better those large wide landscape shots (a lot of trees etc)?
And how good is follow focus with Otus lens? Is the focus throw long enough to use it with follow focus BT Revolvr Atom?
Thanks for the advice

Hey Karel!

OTUS for sure between the two, XENON FF can be great in the right hands and it has a less modern rendering (which can be a good thing!).

Sharpness and CAs suppression is vastly superior on the OTUS line tho...

Mechanically are very good and focus throw on 55 85 100 is good and enough for use with FF but unfortunately the 28 has a short throw.

Thank you for your help Tommaso. Yes I see only great reviews of the Otus line of lenses. I guess I'll take 28mm and 55mm first. I want to use them with mattebox (misfit :D) and in that case I need to buy Duclos front step up rings. But 114mm or 95mm step up adapters?

And those Tokinas Vista Primes look georgeous too! But their weight is brutal :( But that 18mm T1.5 yummy! I think they can do 14mm T1.5 and that would be amazing!
