  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: Pro Battery Module (Quad) and Module Adaptor

+1 !!! Really very need second EVF/ LCD for connecting Bomb EVF and RED pro 7' LCD simultaneously , as on RED ONE

I definitely know what you are saying, as the owner of (8) Anton Bauer Dionic batteries.

My guess is: One advantage will be for younger Scarlet owners who don't have the cash yet to invest in a larger brick battery system. When you go that direction, you never spend less than $2000-$3000, and often more. Perhaps their Redvolts will be able to do double duty in the side handle and also in more of a studio configuration.

Didn't notice your post until just now. :D

While you may be correct about most people, I personally chose to go with the REDvolts and the Pro Battery Module (Quad) because I think it's a cleaner-looking system. V-mount and AB batteries have been around for a really long time, and they'll probably continue to be popular far into the future. But, for me, I think there are just a few too many disadvantages such such as the inability to bring more than three onboard planes, having to make sure that you get the right battery plate for your camera or else you won't have a percentage display of the time remaining and also the extraordinarily unlikely, but still valid concern that the battery plate may possibly damage the camera. And if it does, as long as you're using a third-party plate, the camera's warranty becomes void. And you have to admit, the Pro Battery Module does look pretty cool.

So, that' why I chose RED's Pro Battery Module. :-) But as you say, for most other people, it's probably due to monetary reasons.

I just don't want anyone thinking I'm cheap. LOL

I will say that one HUGE disadvantage to the REDvolt system is that you have no D-Tap.

Do we actually have any technical infos about battery (Wh) life on the module?
Are there some mounting options under the module (to put a shoulder pad)?
Can we put some pressure under the module (put on the shoulder)?

Pat

I believe each individual REDvolt is 30 Wh and typically lasts for between 30-45 minutes on a Scarlet and 30 minutes on an EPIC. Four REDvolts in the Pro Battery Module (Quad) should be able to power either brain for at least two hours.

Also, I saw a photo a while ago of a shoulder pad mounted under the Pro Battery Module. I'll try to find it.

I will point out...

If you bolt the battery plate to the back of the camera it should not have ANY chance of tweaking the Camera back, and if you put the Adapter Module between there you can use the quick release without worry of possible damage to the camera.

3 REDbricks on an airplane = 15 REDvolts....

Some thoughts...

The nice thing about the Batt Module is no cables... but then no D-tap and it makes the camera bigger (albeit slightly) then a brick on the back and holds less power then a single REDbrick.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean... Are you talking about attaching a V-Mount or AB battery plate to the back of the brain with a Module Adaptor in between them?

True.

Also true.

So Tehben, you're saying that you prefer RED BRICKS? (I do mean that as an honest question.) I've been researching battery systems over the past few months and I've concluded on the REDvolts, but, I may have to re-reconsider.

Thanks.

A tipically day of shoot eats about 4 REDbricks = 560Wh... so 18 REDvolts... ?

Pat

Yes. (Well, more like 19, but yeah...)

Anyone know how long the Quad Charger takes to charge the 4 RedVolts?

It's hard to beat the v-mount batteries for production. I have both redvolts and v-mount batteries and it's just easier to run with v-mount on a larger production. It all comes down to your style of shooting. I like to have the camera powered up while I'm lighting so a brick makes sense. If I was running around shooting b-roll handheld then redvolts may be better but honestly the v-mounts are not that big a deal, especially with Brook's VF plate. You could buy the small (and Light) dionic's and have a pretty light weight package. The bebop rouge batteries actually have a d-tap on then so you could run another monitor, pix240 or zoom motor off them.
I actually haven't used the redvolts apart from testing and I have 6 of them.

I think how I'm going to set up is 3-4 REDbricks (already have them) and a couple REDvolts for the side handle for hot swapping or quick HH shots.

I will probably be shooting away from power a lot and bricks are just going to be easier then juggling 20 REDvolts. If you are always around power then it sounds like people are talking about rotating 8? of them successfully. And at some point the REDvolt XL's will be available which might be easier to deal with.

That is the great thing about RED though, you have a billion possible configurations :)

Thanks for the replies Shane and Tehben. Okay, so it looks like I'll be canceling my order for the Pro Battery Module (Quad) and Module Adaptor and getting a V-Mount system instead.

I've been saved again by the REDUser community. Now that I think about it, carrying 14 REDvolts when I could just have three RED BRICKs does seem a little silly. :-)

I have just one more question. Have you both (or anyone else here) ever heard of a V-Mount battery plate causing damage to a camera (specifically an EPIC or Scarlet)?

I haven't heard of any issues as long as you use the screws.
Might be worth it to keep the module adapter though, you might need it at some point and like others said it could allow you to QR your brick solution.

Dont forget Redvolt XLs, though, wattage equivalent of 3 redvolts. If you're using the side handle with a few volts, you could go with a single quad charger, maybe 2-3 redvolts for the side handle, and 4 XLs and you've got a ton of power.

Then again, I am going brick to start with, and adding Volts etc. later so...

Hmm... That's another possible solution. Are you planning on using REDvolts with a Side Handle or Pro Battery Module, or are you going to be using V-Mount/AB batteries?

I'm starting with the Wooden Camera v-mount system, but I ordered a side handle and quad today. Might cancel the quad for a dual once details on that firm up.
