  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's RED ROCKET MOBILE - Who wants one -

After some years of dreaming about that sort of opportunity to get RED ROCKET mobile that I also jokingly was naming "Alexa module" I just realized this is not making sense.

Why?

RED is making R3D RED CODE RAW recording cameras and all other sort of encoding (De-Bayering, etc,..) is dedicated to be made with a software (RCX or any other RED SDK enabled)

and also if you would need a real time than there is RED ROCKET card "assembled in Germany" by DVS.

That's it for now and probably also for the future.

So what does it mean to get mobile encoding/transcoding to various formats like a DPX, PRO RES, DNxHD, Tiff, etc... also resizing is included.

Definitely needs a RED ROCKET card.

Below are images how I get mobile with Mac BookPro 17" (the latest model 2011).

Thunderbolt enclosures are all still on advertising and are not shipping.

I found a cheap enclosure from Taiwanese company NESTOR that has 3x slots and also 2x with 8 line.

Then I put inside RED ROCKET, NVIDIA QUADRO 4000 and HDSDI from RED ROCKET (dummy card).

Also I have thunderbolt Pegasus RAID 4TB and Thunderbolt BlackMagic Ultra Studio 3D (HD-SDI, HDMI, etc,...) and all works together very nice.

In the future when any of workable Thunderbolt enclosure appears I will exchange it with that.

Also must say that I rate digital cine cameras not with the numbers of resolution (or photosites) but with the ISO speed numbers.

Already have paid for Scarlet X (slower stock* camera) and Canon C300 EOS (faster stock* camera) and waiting for it to get in upcoming days.

Here a stock* means exactly the same like in terms of film stock.

please jarred, post a "hehehe" so we know your working on something like this :)

great concept image, Mark. If I could even have one of these - and jump it around between my mobile station, my studio tower, field locations. I wouldn't even care about a price break. What I care about is mobility, and the ability to use one card between multiple machines -- and speed optimization, of course. I have already invested in one Rocket card but moving it between all applications is a big pain - I really don't want to be into two Rocket cards for $10K, just to use them on two machines. Not sure which is clunkier - moving the tower, or pulling the card....

Both options feel so much...like yesterday's technology. C'mon RED, where's that FUTURE you're always bragging about?? Do it!

Yeah!

Need this real real bad..... Please and Thank you

Mark, that Red rocket mobile box you shopped is the ice-cream sandwich of my dreams..
Please let it come at NAB...
PLEASE, if this isn't being made it should only mean they are making something better, but this will more than do..

Can everyone please vote with their posts like Mark suggested
or is it obvious enough to RED that these will jump off the shelves and make every Red owner/ shooter "Better Faster Stronger"

http://codexdigital.com/products/vault.php

It's called the "Codex Vault-S"

Duplication and trans-coding all handled automatically and faster than real-time.

The Codex Vault is a standalone solution requiring no external drives or processing. It has its own internal processor and works with Codex 1TB Transfer Drives for automatic back up of camera original data. It provides a single, standardised workflow regardless of the camera. It also has the capability to produce deliverables in all formats required for dailies review, post production and archival purposes.

it just has to do everything a rocket does now, be portable crunch data and cost half.

Its so simple.

:)

pricing of redrocket is ok, but not the mobility factor.
something in the size of the redmag readers and with the power of the existing redrocket cards would be fine. would buy that without thinking a second about it...

Yes and if it would be a module that you can either have it on camera or on the desktop by un-docking it... it would be really badass.

I see it as something every RED owner should own.

At 5K it was 20% of the cost of the R1 when it was introduced.
At 5K it's 505 of the cost of a Scarlet.

I just really believe that if you put this in everyone's hands then you really eliminate the "red is hard to post" argument still being touted by so many.

Ok ok, I can't help myself. Yes I like to push the RED boys for more useable tools.. so here goes.

RED ROCKET MOBILE: Who wants one. (Manufactured by RED)

Multiple Thunder Bolt, SADA, FIREWIRE ports or any pipe thats quick.
DVI-HDSI-HDMI & Thunder Bolt outputs for monitor viewing.

Since we all have know Fricken idea what APPLE are doing with the MAC TOWERS, and with MAC BOOK PRO's being super powerful these days and best of all, portable.. A RED ROCKET MOBILE like this with SSD CARD reader would be a major asset for a majority of us working on the ROAD or in home offices or small POST HOUSES.
We can backup and transcode all at the same time... Playback on set, grade on set all in realtime. All without dragging a Bloody TOWER around the world.

Transcoding RAW to DPX, PRO RES, DNxHD, Tiff, etc.. is the biggest and slowest hurdle in RED WORKFLOW without a RED ROCKET.. Smooth this part out with a small affordable portable system that can fit in your computer bag and RED just got way faster and easier !!! .

For example... I shot 6 hours of data. Laptop transcode to 4444 PRO RES HD (NO RED ROCKET) 38 hours... !!!!
Talk about do my head in... I could get film back from the lab in 12 hours. YES! thats right.
RED ROCKET Transcode for the same amount is 6.8 hours...! If I had one in that city I ws working in.
I just can't be dragging around a TOWER everywhere. A RED ROCKET mobile would save every project and make on set viewing and transcoding a dream come through.

People power will hopefully push RED to make one of these. VOTE with your posts guys, RED LISTEN.

+ THE 4k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE is still on my RADAR - Especially with REDGAMMA 3 coming out.

How about this one Mark:

Epic and Scarlet have playback now which means they can Decode and Debayer in real time similar to a Rocket.

How about a thunderbolt module that uses the cameras inbuilt SSD module, decodes, debayers and presents on the Thunderbolt / Display Port monitor. As far as I can tell, at the same time, this can be converted to Prores or any desired format easily and written to another disk as fast as the camera can process.

The module would only need 2 Thunderbolt ports.

Basically this means the camera becomes your mobile Thunderbolt Rocket.

Rick

Also a really good idea! Use the camera's processing power :)
