  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's RED ROCKET MOBILE - Who wants one -

I found this thread a little late, but yes I think it is a great idea.

Most my clients still use FCP7, and havent made the transition to a premiere all online workflow so prores is still in very high demand.

But i guess right now we have the new sound devices which does prores.... I think this, if anything put a prores module for red on the backburner...

Cheers

Ivan

Ok ok, I can't help myself. Yes I like to push the RED boys for more useable tools.. so here goes.

RED ROCKET MOBILE: Who wants one. (Manufactured by RED)

Multiple Thunder Bolt, SADA, FIREWIRE ports or any pipe thats quick.
DVI-HDSI-HDMI & Thunder Bolt outputs for monitor viewing.

Since we all have know Fricken idea what APPLE are doing with the MAC TOWERS, and with MAC BOOK PRO's being super powerful these days and best of all, portable.. A RED ROCKET MOBILE like this with SSD CARD reader would be a major asset for a majority of us working on the ROAD or in home offices or small POST HOUSES.
We can backup and transcode all at the same time... Playback on set, grade on set all in realtime. All without dragging a Bloody TOWER around the world.

Transcoding RAW to DPX, PRO RES, DNxHD, Tiff, etc.. is the biggest and slowest hurdle in RED WORKFLOW without a RED ROCKET.. Smooth this part out with a small affordable portable system that can fit in your computer bag and RED just got way faster and easier !!! .

For example... I shot 6 hours of data. Laptop transcode to 4444 PRO RES HD (NO RED ROCKET) 38 hours... !!!!
Talk about do my head in... I could get film back from the lab in 12 hours. YES! thats right.
RED ROCKET Transcode for the same amount is 6.8 hours...! If I had one in that city I ws working in.
I just can't be dragging around a TOWER everywhere. A RED ROCKET mobile would save every project and make on set viewing and transcoding a dream come through.

People power will hopefully push RED to make one of these. VOTE with your posts guys, RED LISTEN.

+ THE 4k PRO RES / DNxHD MODULE is still on my RADAR - Especially with REDGAMMA 3 coming out.

The better product functionally is a 2k pro res module that can record pro res on a CF card ( any CF card) so we can record an online R3d file and an 2k pro res file for offline edit on FCP X without the need of transcoding the r3d files using RED Cini.

Why settle for a rocket...?

Now we pumped our DIT flight case station with the following.

On the side of the case there is power in and dual BNC (4K out) to go to monitor.
Inside is a Red rocket raid 4tb from max digital with a Esata card, and PC express connector to the mac also A SSD Reader mounted so the Mags are just inserted trough a slot in the side of the case.
The Mac book pro has except for RCXP also a Autodesk Smoke 2012.
And our client monitor has thunderbolt out. So this means we can capture the live feed from the camera with a click on the tablet feed it into a Action setup and instantly see how that key works etc.

I find it amazing our 250K USD flame 2012 is not much faster than this pelicase monster.

A red rocket on set is good of course, but a postproduction powerhouse is excellent.. :)

''We'd be happy with just a REDMAG Mini with a thunderbolt connector. The on-set all in one would be great, the biggest hurdle we have now is the transfer time.

Faster is always nice. But using Esata you get down to about 15 minutes or less with a 128Gb SSD. How much faster is thunderbolt, I know it's faster, but in the end you usually write to a disc that is not much faster than Esata. So normally the thunderbolt to your computer for example is not faster, or?

I mean, since the built in disk is usually esata.

I used too do that... But Always something would jiggle out of alignment, RAM would falter... something stupid would play up with it then give us hell for the next few days.. TOWERS are so not made to travel.

This is why I only mount my towers in a shock mount flight case. They're worth the extra cabbage, but they are a bit bulky.

RED we want these mobile rockets, ASAP cash on hand.

Yep. I didn't want the idea dying away in the forum. Once it fades away get a new one going.
This is an important tool (if we are all to use raw r3ds) So needs to be kept up front.

where is the line ?
if i m up @3am, will i be in the first 5000 ?
Mark what your box size is, that will make us live longer and happier.
