It has obviously been in discussions for a while but because of the normal 17wk window between theatrical and DVD release to a 12 wk window to combat piracy.

Cineworld. Odeon and Vue have argued against this and apparently the decision has been made so it won't hit UK cinemas at all!

Mind you to correct that the Independents and possibly Showcase may still but if Disney don't back down it looks the way of things...

But yep...way to increase piracy by not showing it!!

Is the UK really where most pirated copies of movies originate from though? Thought it was more Russia, China, etc.

Uhh...this seems a bit retarded...how does not showing the film in the UK stop piracy? I was looking forward to seeing it too! ah well... lucky for me theres the genesis down the road from my uni so they'll probably have it...

It doesn't but we're meant to think it does. Someone will blink and I'm kind of doubting it's going to be Disney...

Any bets that this is actually a ploy by theater owners to keep Avatar in digital theatres longer and not have to give up the 3D spots to Alice in Wonderland?

UK always gets the movies after the USA, but the publicity comes at the same time. This creates want in the UK market, but without any opportunity for UK people to act on that want. Having a long wait to DVD after the movie compounds that because the USA DVD will be out already and can be imported, and as soon as the DVD hits the market anywhere in the world, you've got a perfect copy to pirate. Solution of course, is global simultaneous release dates for movies and rapid DVD release.

No its not a ploy, although that wouldn't be unheard of...

Disney tried to do the same thing with UP, however the cinemas threatened to take Christmas Carol out of the cinemas, so Disney caved. One of the problems with this is that you let Disney do it and everyone else will want the same agreement. Disney's argument is that 95% of the revenue is taken in the first eight weeks. This is mostly true for smaller films.

Don't forget that cinemas don't make any money from ticket sales. They generally have to make a RPH (Revenue Per Head) of £2-3 on concessions stands to make any profit.

The ridiculous aspect of all of this is that there are people recording 3D performances (IMAX or RealD) and then uploading them onto the web. The general public still think that 3D tech is all the same. RealD is different to IMAX and neither glasses work for the other and obviously anaglyph doesn't. The studios want to counter this by making the DVD sales earlier.

The best way, as Graeme stated, is with global simultaneous release. Both with theatrical and DVD. Which is done sometimes but is sporadic and film specific.

So I suppose them advertising "Alice In Wonderland" in 3D at the beginning of "Avatar" in the UK was just...erm...a waste of time?? A tease???

Yep! Unless someone backs down that is. And the Cheshire cat was the best 3D experience (including Avatar)

Not true, well kind of not true...

You can see Alice in Wonderland from March 5th - in Imax3D.

I did state in a post that some of the Independents may still show it. Some Showcase cinemas have 3D. BFI, hadn't thought of that. Better book now. Looking at it they are pretty much sold out already. So won't be hitting the multiplexes...just this one location in the whole of the UK, in IMAX...lol. If you have a showcase near you, you may be in luck.
