  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's RED ROCKET MOBILE - Who wants one -

Perhaps the more we ask the more chance? I mean hey no one knows whats going down at NAB but it sounds big on the post side this year...(or am i reading it wrong?)

Plus a mini redrocket pre-announcement wouldn't be giving much away to competitors so they could pre-announce at NAB and potentially ship by Jan 2013/ when new sensors drop...

Real time rendering or faster for 6K/ whatever the new sensor is

I so wish you were right.... But sadly RED not responding to this thread says I don't think they care about easy cheap portable transcoding for the masses.
Those old Red rocket cards must be making them a fortune... I hope someone else comes up with a thunderbolt solution.
I so needed one this week. I'm quite literally flying to another country now to transcode footage so I can edit.
The only bottle neck for this camera system is the transcoding. Love the images from it but this device really needs to be answered.

Would be awesome if that could happened!!!

How about this one Mark:

Epic and Scarlet have playback now which means they can Decode and Debayer in real time similar to a Rocket.

How about a thunderbolt module that uses the cameras inbuilt SSD module, decodes, debayers and presents on the Thunderbolt / Display Port monitor. As far as I can tell, at the same time, this can be converted to Prores or any desired format easily and written to another disk as fast as the camera can process.

The module would only need 2 Thunderbolt ports.

Basically this means the camera becomes your mobile Thunderbolt Rocket.

id be more apt to spend the dough on one of these versus one that just sits in my post house. Would way rather take it on set, do live grading, be transcoding if needed while im shooting. And then if i want i can take it all home with me rather than going back to my office after the shoot to log and start transcoding. i can do it all from my couch while i watch californication on showtime. :)

+1 for the RED ROCKET MOBILE. PC compatible of course.

still want one, let's keep the thread alive :)

When I was spec'ing out my system for location shooting just before Scarlet was officially released, I just assumed there WAS a mobile RED Rocket the way people on reduser talked, so when I went to order I was very confused when I couldn't find one... then I thought it must have been discontinued for some reason. In fact, it took this thread to finally convince me there never was one!

I'm using a Samurai for now... but a RED Rocket mobile would be great!

The other problem for Tower use on the road is the bloody PCI cards keep unseating themselves in transit. So it's, unpack the box. Plug everything in, power it all up. DOH! Power it all back down again, Open the Mac, reseat the Red Rocket in the PCI slot again, power it all back up again...

We need something that is all solid state, not slots just soldered to the board - with Thunderbolt. And, as Toia says, how can it compete with anyone else. It's Red specific. So tell us you're doing it. Announce it at NAB. G'won. You know you want to! PLEEAAAAZZZEE

You can buy a PC express slot and put the rocket in it and run it from your laptop... that's as mobile as it get at this point.

normally you need Hard drives a card reader and a computer on set so then a pc express thingy is not so much more.

We got a case with a red rocket raid with 4 tb raided storage, zata card, and rocket with a 17 inch macbook all installed in a pelicase with power socket. So just attach power and it all works. the case is small enough to go as hand language.

And it works quite well.

Your set-up sounds great!
Do you think you could post some pictures and details of your mobile DIT case?
Would be much appreciated, as I'm trying to figure out how to stay mobile and reduce transfer times myself...

I will tomorrow,but it's quite simple.

We bought this:
A maxx digital rocket raid 4tb.
A peli case that is a bit bigger the the above to fit the bellow, snuggly.
A power input socket.
2 Bnc troughput conectors.
A power cord/splitter with like 5 outputs.
A macbook charger.
3 computer fans mounted in the case.
3 fan grills to mount over the above.
A 5 volt charger for usb for the above.
A USB charger for the card reader.
A esata card / connector board for the card reader.
A SSD Card reader.
Some foam to go around the stuff.

We make holes for the computer fans, 220V power in and the 2 BNC connectors for the rocket video out.
Then we seat the raid in foam so it sits but has dampening and we made sure it got good ventilation / cooling from the surrounding computer fans.
On the side of the raid we put all the rest.
On top we have a sheet of foam and then plywood and then foam again.
The PC express cabel also comes out of the case together with a esata and macbook power so it's possible to run the whole thing with the case closed. And when you are in transport the macbook fits nicely on top of things right under the lid. fully padded in foam.

So it's very much a full DIT station in a carry on case ready to run as is and no lose cables any ware.

will show picture tomorrow.
