  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY NOW SHIPPING...

REDRAY playback test on the Sony 55" 4K XBR55X900A panel. Pretty impressive (at least in person) :-) The display currently costs around $5000 for the 55" and $7000 for the 65".

Shiny new addition to our Red armoury today. Now encoding DPX's etc as fast as my little computers can scramble. Excited me, excited clients.

First impression: Beautiful image quality, slick and professional hardware and firmware. Great little package, can't wait to see it grow and develop.

I hope 4k projectors start to come down even more than panels. Kinda shocked there haven't been any sub 5k projectors announced yet actually.

Really? It was years after 1080p flat panels were standard before affordable 1080p projectors started coming out last go around.

Interesting. On most of the Sony 55" and 65" 4K panels that are playing back 4K content demos (from their USB port), I've noticed not only quite a bit of compression artifacts, but also what looks a bit like raster lines. It just looks odd and comes off as very underwhelming.

Anyone else notice this?

Casey,

the only Sony 4K demo I've seen recently - was on a 84" unit at a small trade show here in the Denver area - don't know what the feed hardware was but the loop reel - was almost all HD content UPSCALED that looked terrible - they even had in very fine print at the bottom of the screen that the 4K content was "Simulated" - besides being soft and compression artifacts it was grossly over saturated... sure that the monitor had all the 'features" turned on which didn't help either.

Haven't tried the REDray on one here yet.

I just have to say how tremendous this is and it's sort of blowing my mind.

So between the last half of my day today and from 11am until to 2pm today I've knocked out a nice edit of 60 shots in a 3:00 timeline from selects, edited them against a punchy track, have executed color correction, then just now produced a color grade. Once I'm done exporting these frames I'll encode the .RED through RRencoder for playback on the REDRAY. All of this in 4K suitable for 4K cinema projection with less of a day of work in reality. Let alone I'll be able to play this back right here and also send off a .zip archive, SD Card, or whatever to another REDRAY player.

Seriously. This is amazing.

yup - having a complete 4K workflow (from the initial shoot to final 4K delivery and display/distribution) in your office is amazing and still feels a bit crazy! What we've all been wanting!

The free REDRAY app "REDCommand" is now available in the iTunes app store... Good timing, thanks RED!

What monitor did you grade from? 4K?

What I use here are:

- 24" HP Dreamcolor LP2480ZX
- 24" DELL U2412M
- 46" Samsung LNT4665F

All calibrated and matched as well as my MSI notebook for field work.

Occasionally send images to my phone just to do that. The Galaxy S4 screen is pretty nice out of the box.

Some of this is going to change in July though.

Has anyone done a .RED encode for a higher timebase than 24? Most interested in learning how a 48 timebase encode affects encoding time and final result.

Only 23.98 and 24 supported currently.

Running a 25p clip through the encode just results in skipped frames as far as I can tell, haven't tried higher.

Itching for 25p, but I'm restraining myself on the instant wishlist that having the Redray here has created in my head....

Just a small morning update as I've been playing around with RRencoder a whole lot.

On this particular system I have an I7 3.07 and I'm getting about 10-14 minutes per minute of 4K DPX encoded (4096x2160) depending on system load.

I am putting a new system together in July and I'm pretty confident I can half that number and maybe a bit further into the 3-4 minute realm. Maybe even 2-ish. Which to me opens up many doors on just what .RED can be used for.

According to the documentation and my own tests RRencoder likes:

- RAM
- CPU
- GPU
- Disk Read/Write Speed

I've also been encoding some grain tests to see how .RED holds up at various compression schemes of Standard (9Mbps), Premium (18Mbps), and Cinema (36Mbps). So far very positive.

I'm currently rendering out a "smashed" grade on some material with grain and lots of shadow detail. Curious how this reel of sequences holds up.

I'll have to do some tests with .R3Ds with a Red Rocket (eventually Rocket X too) and without for 4K, 5K, and eventually 6K material. Curious how the Red Rocket can come into play in terms of encoding time on .RED.

For REDRAY though, in terms of playback performance and visual quality I'm pretty damn impressed. There are things going on right now that cost a whole ton not too long ago.

:-D

Sweet. Awesome to hear. We're almost there.

Thanks for all the info, Phil. Once you have your new system spec'd, there are many of us who would benefit from your research and outcome. There is little point in reinventing the wheel if you are open to sharing -- and we all know you are.

Best,

Eryc

does anyone know if you need a redray in order to purchase the .red encoder , or will it be available as a separate purchase eventually? ..im surprised it hasn't been made available in the shop yet, since redrays out the door

Will do. I'd also say stay tuned to what Jeff Kilgroe will have to say in the coming weeks and months as he's more of a computer whisperer than I am.

I've been eyeballing his GPU talk lately like a hawk.

It's already available.

But! You will need a RedRay to be able to view your encoded files, there is no playback/preview on computers.

Just a side-note, it looks like 2014 will be a interesting year for High-End-Workstation CPUs. As long as intels cpu-roadmap doesn't change, this will be the birthyear of new Haswell-Es with DDR4-support and up to 8 cores for desktop-cpus, probably more cores for Xeons.

That makes me overthinking my plans to build a dual-cpu-socket2011-system... ;)
