Now that I have have the REDRAY in my possession (it's sitting next to me staring at me while I write and I haven't even hooked it up just yet) I'll be on the hunt for some 4K displays.

Available now: I'm heavily leaning towards the Sony 55" or 65" as I've seen both in person and I don't need a mega massive screen really past those sizes for my use.

Available now: Seiki is the "if I can't decide on the Sony but really want 4K in my house tomorrow" plan in my book. It's a hell of a deal.

Available now: LG. Too big for my needs.

Available ???: Last time I spoke to the Samsung peeps their 55F9000 and 65F9000 were supposed to "land" stateside in July, however, it's been mighty shush on that front.

Available ???: Also, last time I spoke to the rather friendly folks over at Panasonic there was the 56" OLED model they showed at CES this year and it's on it's way apparently, but don't now when. The thing I dig about this sucker is it's really, really thin and fairly lightweight. However, right now it's a unicorn.

I'd like to see that Asus monitor in person. It's on the small side, but for a big nice monitor... Maybe. Not totally sold on the Sharp monitor though.

The Dark Horse: Apple may drop down from the orchard and provide something that could be Red Delicious in the 4K realm. Eyeballing them closely since they have shown their cards and emphasis on 4K. That's very likely happening towards the end of the year or beginning of next year though.


It's happening fast right now though. Seems like every week and sometimes daily new 4K news is happening.

I got confused there for a moment... Yes is the Redray-projector the one with one of course, the Home one.... But I was thinking of a second Redray for the Large Venue Projector, as I believe that does not have one, unless I have understood that wrong.

I infiltrated Red Studios Hollywood today with a grappling hook and disguised myself up as a Red Studios Sand Bag. Did the Metal Gear thing. Got in and grabbed it, then they sicked their quadrocopters on me. I barely made it out alive. They got my getaway driver, but they couldn't catch me.

Next week I'll likely be hooking it up to a 4K projector (Christie), but I certainly will need a monitor solution in my suite.

Encode time is much faster with storage with FAST READ TIMES. I striped a couple ioFX cards together and got a significant performace boost on encodes. So ... oput your source material on SSD or very fast raid or PCIe RAM cards.

I think it sort of depends on how much money you have that is burning a hole in your pocket ... and whether you want it NOW. I've got the Seiki and AJA just shipped me my Hi-5 4K, and I will let you know how that works out. But, since you are in LA and have a REDRAY, and since Ron Lagerlof is in LA and he has a Seiki + the Gefen boxes, here is what I would do: I would give Ron a call and see if you can go over to his facility and hook your REDRAY up to his Seiki through the Gefen boxes. If that set-up works (and I believe Jarred said that it did) and you like what you see, then it might be a "no-brainer," especially if you can still get the Seiki for around $1,000.00 (don't know if that is still the case). Ron's Gefen boxes can be had from B&H for about $400.00. That would put you at around $1,400.00 for the works. The only other thing you may want to consider would be a professional calibration from David Webb (which I plan to do).

If you can wait, then one thing is for sure, there most certainly will be more choices in the future.

The ASUS 31" 4K is nearly identical to the Sharp. It's the same panel, light system and internal components driving it. It's an OEM for ASUS from Sharp, so the only thing that's going to change there is whatever software/ firmware ASUS can tweak. I'm interested in it too, but I already bought and returned the Sharp PN-K321, as I was not happy with the unit. Especially for its price.

Good points. I have access to a Seiki and the Sony's, the ladder being something I feel is a better product yet not a better deal. There's some R&D involved with what I'm up to and I may be able to snipe a pre-production unit from somebody if they allow me to test it out. Making some calls Monday.

Also, going to be testing out the 4x 1080p output for 3D mapping/projection. That'll be fun, but that late July talk at the moment.

Same thoughts about Apple. They had an interest in 4K two years ago and I imagine we'll see the efforts of that in the time frame you mentioned.

There is no way Apple will ship the new Mac Pro without having an Apple-branded 4K+ display to hook it up to.
And there is no way Apple will price the new 4K+ displays over $2K, IMHO much closer to $1~1.5K range.

The Vizio XVT units seem promising. I was trying to hold out for the 70" XVT when our old DLP died, but the family didn't want to wait and I got a good deal on the 75" Samsung over the Memorial Day holiday... Can't complain. It has its issues, but they're issues which plague all the other large screen edge-lit LED displays. I wish edge-lit would freakin' die.

I think so too. The premium pricing for 4K will drop fast once more panels hit the market, especially the lower cost ones. The bigger name brands like Samsung and Sony won't be able to charge a premium on the pixels anymore, they will be back to trying to justify it with all their other "smart" features and whatnot. I just hope the Vizio XVT series at least has picture quality to compete with the Sony 55 and 65 inchers. Shouldn't be too tough. The $1K SEIKI doesn't look half bad once dialed in and if you get it to play nice. Hopefully they get their issues ironed out before they ship their 65" 4K later this year.


As for Apple, I agree with what Peter said. They will have 4K, possibly even a 5K "retina" display to offer us. Of course, it will run on Thunderbolt 2... If nothing else though, once they do it, the rest of the computing industry should follow suit and we'll soon see a plethora of 4K+ desktop monitor offerings.

a couple of notes on rendering a REDRay file - took the MammothHD 2013 demo/show reel which is 6 minutes as the test file 4K(QHD with audio track):
The ProRes4444 file - 49.5 GB (which is the file we showed at NAB)
The DPX Folder for ingesting into REDCineX for REDRay encoding = 320 GB (created from the ProRes4444 file)
the resulting REDRay file = 1.83GB

all done and finished in 4K - with playback thru REDRay Player

Used the mid setting of 18 "Premium" - will be testing both the 9/Standard and 36/Cinema settings over the weekend...

Here's REDRAY up and running on my review monitor (taken on my Galaxy S4 phone).

On thing I like is the size of the REDRAY controller. It's not huge and fits rather ergonomically in your hand.

I'll try to get some shots of it in action on a projector next week. Gotta encode some stuff first.
