  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY NOW SHIPPING...

+ 1

very cool, has odemax launched anything?
also, i think quite a few of us are interested in the projector :)

+1 for Odemax...I hope the silence is simply the quiet before the storm, but it's a little disconcerting. Maybe they already sold out to Operation Mockingbird and Prism. Haha. I better watch what I write. Haha. But not.

Great to see the players being released.

Thanks for the pics Casey. Interested to see what .RED output options you get in REDCINE-X.

Is the .RED encoder shipping with it?

Each player comes with one RRENCODER license for the REDCINE-X plug-in. The RRENCODER plug-in licenses can be bought separately for $20, but are still listed as coming soon.

Casey G says in #15 that he got his RRencoder plug-in and will be testing it soon. So they must be shipping with the player!!! Otherwise, we'd run out of pre-seeded content pretty quickly, yeah?

Any chance of controlling RedRay with a phone or tablet? This is my first time seeing that remote.

Yup.. app is just sitting waiting to get approved by Apple in the apple store.

How are the very few current batch of 4K projectors accepting 4K? Is redray compatible with all? I could advise some institutions to get this asap to take advantage of their infrastructures...

Very cool, thanks for the quick response! Look forward to seeing that in action as well...It did just hit me that I saw Lawrence at NAB controlling from the iPad, glad to hear the whole thing is good to go on all fronts!

We have tons of footage from the past 5 years. We have Sony 84ich TV, we have three RED ROCKET running with K5000s, but I didn't even get the shipping notice.

Lovely interface, lovely images...

Soon I'll be testing the RRencode Plugin within RC-X Pro and give some updates on that process...

Looking forward to learning the encode times.

Björn,
I prefer computer playback as well. For the DRM however, the Redray acts like a 'dongle' to slow down the pirates.
Having no .red playback codec also forces them to transcode as well.

Someone needs to try this test once the .red encoder is out:

Encode some red footage with .red
Encode same footage with x264 to the same bit rate.
Play both on the UHD TV and see how they compare.
Then try same test with grainy footage. Codecs hate grain.

Looking forward to learning the encode times.

Does that matter ?
You encode your final project that you spent months editing, and say it takes 24hrs to encode a 60 min. piece.
Who cares. Unless you have an entire library to encode, but that's big boy stuff and then you use a render farm.

Orrrrhhh, you finished shooting a short but had to go back and pick up some shots... now you are rushing to finish in time to get it up on ODEMAX so it can be viewed for entry into a festival.

I've experienced long encodes just going from 5k to MPEG 2 and I expect squeezing down to .RED size will probably take much longer. Jarred said previously that the encodes take a long time. I would just like to have that quantified. I would also like to hear if the Red Rocket is able to encode to . RED.

There's a lot we don't know yet and I see no harm in trying to find out. '-)

But I do agree in principle that no matter how long it takes, encoding is the part which is going to make the movie watchable in glorious 4k and because of that, it doesn't really matter if it takes a long time to complete the work.
