If you want to have the conversation next year, that's fine. Be prepared for the conversation to include, if not be centered around, the F65.

Television pilots are a unique beast. Each of the last 3 years - ever since the SAG nonsense largely brought an end to using film on these shows - there has been a "camera of the year," the one camera that gets "buzz" and ends up being the defacto dominant choice. Two years ago that was the F35, with the D20 following far behind. Last year it was Red and the F35 again. This year it's Alexa. Next year, who knows? Maybe Epic. Maybe Scarlet. Maybe Alexa Plus. Maybe F65. Your guess is as good as anybody's.

This I agree with. Camera of the year definitely seems to be the trend. Its getting very expensive for camera rental companies. its a great thing Reds can be traded in like cars.

Images are highly subjective so hard to compare. I don't particularly like softness to alexa images, even with arri raw but aside from that both cameras can be graded to match very easily. That tells me both images are pretty close aside from resolution.

As a colorist, I don't necessarily agree with that. But that's just my opinion, no more or less valid than anyone else's.

wow arri has created a version of Alexa with detached brain connected by a wire to a back pack like body,they could'nt create a self dependent and self sufficient brain like the epic so to somehow make it lighter they now have a detachable brain connected to an alexa body with a wire,this show how ahead epic is from alexa and how desperate the arri guys are to have a tech like epic and also how decisions on tech made at red govern and provoke the future walking path of the companies like arri. Bravo RED...............

On Epic you can have lossless compression though if you want, not that you, as you point out, necessarily should.

Indeed images are to be preferred by eye, rather than by spec, or perhaps more importantly, not by the brand name or the colour of the logo on the camera.

The biggest problem with Red is most people, and I mean most people don't know how to debayer correctly and a even larger number don't know how to use Redfilmlog. I have posted this on the forum many times. Red needs to put up full debayering workflow videos for different scenarios, looks and lighting needs. And I'm not talking about Jim's recon thread. I'm talking about the Red.com website should have a lot lot more video based workflow scenarios. The low price of the camera has made it such that most people think they are dealing with a straight forward 4k video system. They don't really realize that the images it produces are top class, but need to be squeezed out. Do not forget that prior to Panalog, the only products that produced log images were film scanners. How many people had access to those? You can see from the shot on Red threads there are some breath taking projects, and there are some okay ones. I personally went through the same issues until about three years ago when a real colorist did the onelight correction for me. I know there is Reducation it way too little.

I dont know what the big deal is about offboard recording, I am sitting next to my grandfathers betacam and it has that new age feature too! Boy I love this 1986 technology, so ahead of its times!
