  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looking at other popular boards like the P6T it seems they would also work out for all four cards so long as the Kona can get enough air circulation with the RRocket on the next slot. Same goes for the Areca with a GTX on the slot next to that one. There is always a way to get enough air in there and the case I am looking at has a fan blowing over the PCI slots that would almost be perfect, and I can always move down to align perfectly with a bit of creative thinking.
 
The question remains whether AJA or BMD will be able to downscale the 5K and/or 6K signals. I think that the whole point of the RED ROCKET to have 4x DVI and 4x HD-SDI is to be able to monitor the footage directly from the card, while providing internal acceleration for the R3D decoding. There would have to be some kind of down-sampling to HD by the RED ROCKET that can be passed onto AJA/BMD cards for further conversion and monitoring. The "quad-port" standard is still not being adopted by the I/O manufacturers....

RR will downscale also..

REDrocket will do the scaling in realtime.

No extra burden on the GPU than what your favorite app would normally do for a RGB workflow.
 
RED ROCKET can downscale to HD, but You are missing the main part of the sentence: "that can be passed onto AJA/BMD cards for further conversion and monitoring". It could be as simple as taking a SDI HD signal from the RED ROCKET and pass it to the input of the AJA/BMD cards, but this would introduce quite a bit of latency into the signal and defy the purpose. The point I was trying to made was that You would still need the RED ROCKET to do this and therefore potentially eliminate the need for the AJA/BMD if monitoring and signal output is Your only concern. The full feature set of RED ROCKET still remains to be seen...

This sounds exciting. Any hope for Display port or HDMI ports??...we're using HP dreamcolor...and well...they only support 10 bit via display port and HDMI..... :crying:

Oh... I in my humble understanding I thought the signal path would probably end up looking like this:

RAID > NLE > ROCKET > NLE > AJA/BMD > MONITOR > EYES > BRAIN > HEART

How they were going to get the latency down is beyond me. Bad-ass hardware magic?

Am I way off Peter?
 
What if the R.Rocket could serve as a replacement for the AJA/BMD card? Why is everyone assuming that it will be restricted to working with R3D files? I'm waiting for full specs before I start stressing about what system(s) I may need, what PCI-E configurations, etc..

I guess because it sounds like a lot of work for one card.

Then again the only limitations we know of are the speed of the x16 port, the double wide physical size and the cost. So x16 sounds like it shouldn't be a bottleneck, the brains seem to pack a punch in a small package and cards can get quite big, and Red does like to stun with their costs... so I am with you Jeff... just adding a Kona to the spreadsheet for now.

These are both hardware accelerators that allow real time 4K playback, yes?

Why would I spend the extra 95,000 euros/dollars, whatever DVS Clipster is rumored to cost, instead of "under 5K" for Red Rocket?

What am I missing about the price/feature differences?
 
So I'm catching up w/an old editor buddy of mine, filling him in on how things are going w/the film I've been working on (www.jarringmovie.com); just shooting the shite and swaping war stories. Well, I start going on & on about Red, what they've been up to, Red Ray and Red Rocket, etc. etc. and the guy's cracking up. Well, the joke was on me 'cause I had no clue about South Park's Red Rocket... Clipster is a complete system that does VTR emulation, records and plays back DPX sequences in real time at up to 4K resolution, is timeline based, contains full editing and conforming capabilities, does real time format conversions and compression to many, many different formats, and now contains full digital cinema package authoring and encryption support that is unique and thus far unmatched in the industry in terms of its speed, ease of use, and flexibility. The reason "you" would spend the additional money over, say, a Final Cut Pro system with a Red accelerator card is because you are in a real post production/digital intermediate business that deals with real productions that are shot on Reds, but also on film and many other digital cameras. In such a business, you must not only play back Red footage quickly, but you must create many different forms of dailies files and deliverables on a nightly basis, and for digital intermediate work, you must conform projects that incorporate many different types of elements, from files to videotape to film. Then you must create numerous different deliverables, anything from a film print, to HD video deliverables in at least 4 different formats, to Digital Cinema Distribution Masters, to Digital Cinema Packages.

If you don't fit the above description, then no, you don't need a Clipster. Nor is it intended for you.

A girl can dream, Mike. I never thought that I needed a 16mm T1.3 lens and now I don't want to shoot anything else. so pbbbbt! Now I can save my 95,000 and put it towards a C-Mocos motion control arm instead.

Almost like a BlackMagic Multibridge Eclipse but for less? Maybe a version for on set and another for production.
