  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am not all that excited. We do more than Post RED footage. Our computers have limited slots and they are all used up already. Do I have to give up a slot dedicated to an AJA or BMD device to use the RED Rocket? This only makes sense to me if the RED Rocket can do more than just process Red media. If it can be a general purpose display driver for other codecs then it's a winner. I hate single purpose devices. One of the reasons I hate Avid for example.
 
Just think of it as an r3d REDCODE SDK accelerator. Final details before we take orders.

There are expansion slot devices that would probably work. I own a Kona 3, so I know where you are coming from on this. However, I can't ignore the fact that this is a desperately needed component of the RED workflow. I give kudos to RED for not leaving this up to others to develop and instead have shown a commitment to providing the post world with a solution that won't break the bank.

I will either find an available slot or get a dedicated system for this once the final details have been released.

Love 'em or hate 'em one of the things that Avid was able to do by making their systems work only with Avid hardware is they could optimize and support those systems because they had full control over how the components played with each other. When a system is open, it introduces a number of variables that can complicate things and lead to finger pointing, etc. Not that Avid hasn't had it's share of problems over the years, but in some ways, I'm not totally against this approach. In the case of RED, they know their SDK better than anyone, so I would think they'll be able to offer a great hardware solution for processing RED footage.
 
were all turning into such whiners. nothing is ever enough. we have lots of solutions to post red but most of them are slower than we would like or expensive if fast. red offers a low cost solution comparatively and we start nit picking before we even have full details. id be happy as a pig in muck if i got a solution that allows me edit and colour grade r3d in real time without a time penalty and output 2k or hd at the end without transcoding in between or conforming or dealing with online/offline. octomac,red rocket and fcs for under 10k and allowing real time 4k playback, debayer sounds bloody peachy to me. frankly i had hoped red would do something like this for about a year but didnt think they would have the time to devote to it given all there new products they are working on. this will boost red in so many ways i hope they are ready to sell 50,000 of these cards off the bat because everybody is going to want one
 
i have a sneaking suspicion two months will be the same time Final Cut Studio 3 is out, along with Snow Leopard. Add Red Rocket to that, and we're all gonna need to buckle our seat belts....
dude iv had mine on since Red1 ,well that and its law to wear it in Aust. defininatly in 6 months we'll all be inundated with options the likes youd never have dreamed of... 4k realtime right around the corner baby :)

I was working with an array that housed an expansion chassis at NAB this year in AJA's booth.

Remember that REDCODE is only about 35MB/s in its current form... that's not a huge amount of data to move.

While future REDCODE variants will have higher data rates, the current and near-future iterations will likely max out around 100-250MB/s. I don't expect the card to require more than 4 lanes... particularly since RED knows that most people's 8-lane slot is dedicated to some heavy hardware already [be it storage or otherwise].

It's not the bandwidth to the card that's the stress point, it's the full RGB coming back from the card.
 
Ah, touché. I haven't read the whole thread... have lane specifications been outlined?

I have asked this question while back. The problem with Mac Pro's is the lane config:

(Top to bottom):

Slot 4: x4 - normally used for audio/video I/O, such as AJA / BlackMagic

Slot 3: x4 - the only slot usually available

Slot 2: x16 - mostly used by high-performance storage fiber and RAID cards, since they need x8, sometimes used for secondary graphics

Slot 1: x16 - the primary dual graphic slot

To eventually handle 4K+ in DI in uncompressed format, we can't move the storage devices away from the second x16 slot. So unless Apple bumps up the Slot 3&4 speeds, we are left with only two options:

A. The RED ROCKET will require x16 slot, in which case it would have to sit in Slot 1. That would force us to use Slot 3 for primary OS graphics, which might not go well with many graphic power users, unless the RED ROCKET can double as GPU as well...

B. The RED ROCKET will work in x4, so we can use the (usually free) Slot 3 and everyone is happy. Now x4 slot provides 1000 MB/s (each x1 is 250 MB/s in PCIe architecture), lets see if this could be enough for RED ROCKET...

The interesting compromise would be if the RED ROCKET required x8. We only put the high-performance storage cards in the second x16 slot because they need x8. So RED could do two different things:

- provide PCIe x8 pass-through connector on the card to external chassis which could host the storage controller... (preferred)

- provide direct connection to external storage sub-systems (dual miniSASx4 or dual/quad 8Gb fiber)

Now this would in fact leave the Slot 3 available for anything else...
