  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Redrushes is dead, God saves the Rocket!!

Redrushes is dead, God saves the Rocket!!

wow would be a couple of months really agonistic.

then we are talking about PCI-E card with hardware acceleration for Redcode decode, ok.

Redrushes is dead, God saves the Rocket!!

My wish list:
- Real-time 4k Playback. (superb for Redcine, RedAlert, Post...)
- Real-Time 2k Playback. (perfect for colorists)
- Real Time 1080p downconvert (FCP, with a smooth scale filter :) )
- Real-Time PAL/NTSC downconvert (some times you know...)
- Acceleration for convert Redcode sequence to DPX, Uncompressed or Cineon via Redcine, Color, FCP...
- SDI, HDMI outs?? welcome if have any... but actually I have my ones. (we need desperately dedicated redcode processors)

dream is for free.

Vico.

Will Red Rocket kindly share a MacPro system with an AJA Kona card (i.e. Kona3 or Kona LHi)? PLEASE make sure Kona and Red Rocket can play nicely together! :-)

Quad HD-SDI PC only ?

I don't think so. Why would you assume this? The only reason we don't have SDI daughter-card support for the nVidia cards is because Apple chooses not to support them. If it were up to nVidia, ATI or others to supply their own display driver sets for OSX, the situation would be quite different and there would be several more graphics cards to choose from.

The RED ROCKET is not a primary video card, but a processor card like the AJA or BlackMagic cards. RED can supply their own drivers for OSX. So what it supports is up to them.

Take it the Quad DVI will be 8bits?

DVI allows for greater than 8bits of color depth. It's just one of those things that no one seems to implement. Also keep in mind that DVI can also be connected to an HDMI display and even the latest HDMI 1.3b spec with "deep color" is within the DVI spec.

I guess we'll see what's up when they tell us all the specs...

Jeff is right. I worked with SONY on the design of the DVI input cards for the 4K SXRD projectors. Since the projector has actually four processing and I/O boards (one for each of the quarter of the imaging chip), only single link DVI is needed to handle this. Therefore they decided to send 8-bit over the single link and 2 extra bits over the secondary link inside the dual link interface. This approach can eventually support up to 16-bit at 4K...

:) Peter

...Unfortunately, the DVI outputs will ultimately be limited by the displays they're connected to. It seems that most display manufacturers are content to limit their DVI inputs to 8bit and a narrowly spec'd and widely accepted set of input parameters.

I agree, Peter. But $50K is a bit out of budget for my humble screening room / grading suite project. Actually, I'm looking at a couple 2K projectors that will accept 10bit input. That will probably have to do for now. Or at least for a few years until those 4K projectors come down a bit in price. I was planning on installing a projector late this year, but I may hold off just a bit longer. Something tells me that projector systems with 3D abilities will hit below the $15K mark (2K / 1080p units) within the next year.

Peter

Wanted to thank you for the heads up on the 11 series from Panasonic. Ordered one yesterday (50") with 10 bit accessory. Nice to meet you at the Red party. Now back to Red Rocket.

Is RED Rocket going to be a spin off of what Nvidia is doing with their Tesla cards and a Quadro 5800? Or if you are use Premiere and the Nvidia Quadro CX with a CUDA enabled plugin? Or more of a AJA / Blackmagic I/O? Or a combination of both?

I don't get its real purpose...is it for on set injesting RED r3d and other digital cameras, or is it for post production?

Sorry for being confused I just see other technologies already available and wanted to find out more details about what it really does.

Derek.

nobody except red has all the details. what we do know is it will accelerate decoding/debayering and playing of r3d files at 4k up to 30fps and 5k up to 25fps. so you could edit natively in 4k and have realtime playback. I'm sure there are other things it will do but they haven't announced all that yet

Just think of it as an r3d REDCODE SDK accelerator. Final details before we take orders.

Did you try reading the first post of this thread? It's explains most of what we know so far...
I did read Jannard's post. It just seams there is 40 pages of conjecture after it and I have a hard time trying to find out what is real. I have a couple of reds and am an early owner and adopter. I just choose not to post a million times about nothing. 15 years as a working cinematographer make me want to focus on the fact and art of filmmaking not the conjecture and fanboy mentality that makes a simple thread 40 pages long. No disrespect meant - I am trying to stay on top of what is real and will affect the work I do.

Right there with ya steadichris. It took me a while but my technique now on the Red Boards is to find a topic that interests me and then scan through the pages until I find a comment by Jim or someone from Red. Saves time and is more informative. As you said, NO DISRESPECT intended to the vast majority of the experts on this forum but things do tend to get into conjecture-land more often than not. Goes with the territory when you open up your business to the masses.

Bottom line- I think Jim and the Red Team handle all of this just right- take everything with a grain of salt but stay open-minded to the worthy comments because they make you better.

Will production for these be fast? I hope it will turn out to be something far easier to produce than lenses. Is that something fair to assume?

That's the plan...

Jim
