  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

Updated my Format Chart with 8K Dragon. I'll add the integral resolutions when they are known, but a lot have been asking for a visual guide already.

Thanks Phil, I keep this guide handy for when a format question arises.

This needs to be quoted here as this particular notable improvement to both 6K and 8K Weapons is important.

Weapon isn't JUST about 8k and Vista Vision. It takes everything about the Dragon and makes it better. For example.. the things that you just commented that are an issue with you, are better on Weapon.

CMOS Smear is reduced on Weapon and those little IR orbs around lightbulbs that you get in rare occasions are dramatically reduced.

I guess a picture is worth a thousand words:

Thanks, Phil.
Much reduced "red glow" with Weapon.

Have to admit the Dragon LLO and ISK looked best to me at first glance. Didn't notice the glow around the bulb until it was pointed out. Of course, a little warming up in post would make the Weapon shot superior, but Dragon ain't exactly chopped liver.

Is the HDMI and SDI on the weapon spit out a 4K Signal? Can't seem to find anywhere says yes or no.

nope.you ll need Redcast module for that.

Seems a bit ridiculous, seeing as how the $2,995 Ursa Mini can output 4K, but a $34,500 Weapon can't unless you add on a module that costs more than two of those Ursa Minis.

Now, don't get me wrong. The Weapon is a much better camera than an Ursa, but seeing as how RED has always pushed 4K over the years, I find it ironic that they don't offer a way to monitor in 4K when the competition is doing it at far lower price points.

red is all about recording internal if you are after SDI HDMI 4K recording they offer you RedCast module.Whats wrong with this?

Well to be fair they do not offer a RedCast that fits Weapon. At least not yet.

The $7000 price tag for the module is what's wrong. As I said, the competition offers 4K out in a $3000 camera, so 4K out is obviously not cost prohibitive to integrate.

Hoping Weapon has 4K HDMI...that would be useful...

The official word from RED (Bomb Squad) is (sadly): "The HDMI output is 1.3 on the JETPACK/ REDVOLT EXPANDER/BASE EXPANDER"
Don't understand how/why they would use a very dated/old tech in a brand new camera system at this price.

The problem is that if you want to record in 6K/8K it would be very nice to monitor in 4K at least. Without a big extra module for $7000 when you pay $50K for a WEAPON CF. The the RedCast module also lacks 6G/12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0. Very very strange.

I completely understand what you mean. "Financially" it doesn't seem to make sense.
Weapon will be able to output 2K RGB to a (1 or 2) monitor (HDMI and 3G), along with recording up to 6K (even 8K) SloMo AND HD ProRes at the same time.
In a small form factor like Weapon, that seems impressive.
Honestly: it would have been great to have 3G-SDI at 4K to feed an Atomos but.... "you can't have it all"?
I suppose they had to make a choice between output-performances, heat management and form factor size.
All my wild guesses :-)

Agreed. The size constraints had crossed my mind, perhaps limiting what it can output from the brain. As I stated earlier, the Weapon is obviously the superior camera. I would much rather have a Dragon sensor equipped camera that only has 1080p video outputs than a lesser camera that outputs 4k to the monitor. In a best case scenario, there would be an economical way to add a 4k video out to the REDs. In the end, it's just a minor complaint, as it's not even close to a deal-breaker for me.
