The time has come to forge ahead with Weapon.

I'm very happy to introduce you all to RED Weapon Forged CF #47 - Skully.

Yes. Skully. I'm taking my bloody camera name back and it's totally appropriate with Weapon.

What started with Scarlet-X Mysterium-X in 2011, which lead to upgrading to Epic M-X in 2013, followed fairly quickly by upgrading to RED Epic Dragon also in 2013, has now lead to RED Weapon Forged Carbon Fiber in 2015. Equipped today with the Dragon 6K Super 35mm + Sensor and relatively soon the 8K VistaVision+ Sensor when that becomes a reality.

I got the email today from RED that my camera was done being upgraded and ready to pickup. I headed down to RED Studios Hollywood and picked it up from the great folks and Shadeslayer at the RED Store.

This is following a tremendous two years of shooting some of the most important footage of my career as well as the most beautiful images I've shot to date with RED Epic Dragon.

I've been a member of REDuser for a long while now, but for those who don't know, at the beginning of 2011 I made a fairly large decision to leave my studio role as a Digital Imaging Specialist to pursue my growing career as a Director and Director of Photography. It was a big step. Prior to that moment studios provided cameras for me to use for the most part, pretty much anything I needed. Once I left that studio I found myself closely eyeballing and finding a way to fund a RED One Mysterium-X, but financially at the time it was still a bit tricky. Making the decision to jump into the RED ecosystem was initially scary as hell, but I was determined and needed a 4K camera solution. Because of my background in film there was no compromise to be made on the resolution front. RED on November 3rd 2011 made that decision real easy. Something felt right inside me when I picked up that camera in 2011, something felt very right about contributing more deeply here on REDuser, and my RED journey began.

Since then I've been very fortunate to work on some fairly large productions and for some of the biggest clients in the world who demand the highest quality images. That lead to the amazing opportunity to instruct at REDucation and even more advanced Dragon workshops in South Korea and Japan. Which even lead to organizing my notes I've shared here, privately, and at the workshops about the DSMC RED cameras in the RED DSMC Field Ops Guide that came out at NAB 2015. Which was shortly followed by completing my largest budget Director/Director of Photography gig to date.

It's been an absolute whirlwind these last couple of years. That's due to Dragon, the support from REDusers, and the big support from the people at RED.

A huge thank you goes to Jim, Jarred, Brent, Graeme and the legion of other hardworking individuals at RED. Some whose names we know and many that we don't.

Thank you for continuing to advance the industry and producing the cameras I prefer to shoot on.

Time to dig into Weapon.

Congrats, Phil!
I like reading your story of how you started w/ Scarlet MX and kept upgrading as you made more $ from your work.

Thanks people. I'll tell you I have everything rigged up and I just started running the Auto Black Shade after setting up my custom keys on the SIDEKICK and I'm just staring at the camera at the moment.

Congrats, Phil!

Interestingly enough, I've won the most awards with my Scarlet-X Mysterium-X. HOWEVER. I landed some of the biggest and most rewarding shoots (in many ways) with Epic Dragon. RED pretty much targeted me dead on with a laser sight with the Dragon sensor design.

Congrats Phill! Skully is a happy lill lady!

Happy for you!

Congratulations Phil. Well deserved. I have had the great pleasure reading most of your post and learned a lot from them over the years. Unfortunately the Weapon is out of reach (for the moment), but with my friend I share an Epic and a Dragon so I can't complain;-). I'm really looking forward to you post about Skully.
All the best

Congrats Phil. Enjoy.

Don't forget that sleep thing. ;-p

Heh. Sleep. Not with all this Raven news spilling out everywhere.

If you guys are curious I picked up a few REDVOLT XLs with my kit to explore the lighter weight side of things (I usually use big honking V-Lock bricks). I'm getting 1 hour and 52 minutes on a fully charge on a very fresh REDVOLT XL. I actually thought it would be lower than that for some reason. I'll be shooting with them this week, so I'll "know for sure" soon.

I'm still struggling to commit. And not that I don't think the new weapon cameras are awesome, because they are.

But my internal math meter tells me not to blow another 150k (x3 Cameras) + accessories and only really get PRORES as and extra over the EPIC, when i don't really use PRORES that much .. mmmm

Phil, Hit me with some solid reasons why I'm going to be 150k better off.

RED should not have built the EPIC DRAGON so well. I'm now struggling to swap it out.

Maybe I just wait until the 8K is mass delivered.... It's sure to be better in every-way. mmmmm.... thinking thinking...

Curious to hear about xl battery life on weapon too. And how it feels shooting with no side handle / REDvolts on small 'hide and seek' missions. Let us know also if you try the 'Peter Jackson style' single redvolt setup :-)

Heh. I agree about Epic Dragon man. Especially after this year and shooting all over with it.

RED sold me on Weapon in a few ways and I really need to get under it's skin to explore everything, but......

I can tell you in the last hour I just shot 6K FF 3:1 at ISO 800 with the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF and it is indeed noticeably cleaner and "visually better" in other ways compared to Epic Dragon's 6K FF at 5:1. Running a diff on stills and footage to figure out "exactly" what's going on. REDCODE RAW Compression Ratio is one piece to that puzzle, but the new improvements to the Weapon optical path must be part of how that's happening. The new OLPF "quick swap" is awesome. Just one turnkey bolt. Very nice and elegant solution. Also they electronically detect now.

Other things I've quickly noticed. This new Auto Black Shade is going to be very useful for me personally. The camera weight is noticeably lighter for the body alone. I'll post some rigs with weights pretty soon. The new fan and ventilation system appears to be quieter, that's a nice thing. Epic Dragon wasn't "loud" for typical narrative work, but a softer camera sound is always welcome.

I'm pretty much like you and don't truly "need" ProRes, but having that option is going to be useful for some of my shoots for sure. Dual REDCODE/ProRes capture can actually save me a bundle of cash on a few shoots in reality. I also have clients that are very into the ProRes thing and capturing that straight away could be useful. Don't know yet for my personally use situation on that one. If you're curious 6K FF at 24fps yields REDCODE RAW 4:1 and ProRes 422 HQ 4K, that's actually pretty awesome. If ProRes is going to be a part of my life in any way the new LUT support is very welcome.

8K is very important to me and that's one big, big reason I went with Forged. I have people hitting me up for 8K footage already.

You ticked a few boxes for me, ... not a 150K worth though.
I think I'll hold off until after Christmas and re-evaluate. It's not a money thing for me, as I can afford to swap over without any issues, but for minimal gain I'm feeling like it's not really worth the effort at the moment.
Anyways...
Have fun mate. It's a sweet looking thing, I do like the new modules.

I'll certainly be posting notes as I dig in further. Just the REDCODE compression ratios across the various frame rates is sort of massive in my book.

Heh. I've only had it for a few hours. I have a few shooting days coming this week that will tell me much more. Right now I'm just testing out if everything "works as expected" and I'm getting used to all these new fancy buttons on the side while I stare longingly at my Side Handle which no longer has an Epic Dragon attached to it :)
