RED Weapon Forged CF #47 "Skully" - Los Angeles

Congrats Phil!

Phil,

Great news and great to see your well deserved meteoric rise through the incarnations of RED cameras. I can't wait to see all of the testing you will show us as I know it will benefit the whole community!

Congrats!

I have to say man it's been an interesting journey. Very hard at times. Sometimes less. It's a madhouse in LA sometimes when it comes to work, but it's also where the fire burns brightest for me. And I'm just a moth looking for some light.

Speaking of light. Here's a fun little image I just slapped together that's got me all nostalgic. I do a lot of look tests and have created a whole lot of looks and LUTs over the years. I have a little over a couple thousand. I often use myself as a "Look Crash Test Dummy" as I'm usually close to the camera and a consistent subject over the years. Here's a quick comp of few shots from RED Scarlet-X M-X, Epic M-X, RED Epic Dragon, and RED Weapon Dragon.

Those have all been derived from some sort of RED Color Space + REDlogFilm. I just had to shoot something tonight as we're getting closer to 2am. My ugly mug will have to do for now :)

Phil,

Congrats on the new shiny toy I am sure you will use it wisely. Unsure why these seem to be rolling off the line so slowly. Only #47 although there may be more cameras produced not on the serial number list? From the outside it looks like two cameras a day? Looking forward to production moving into overdrive.

Haha, great to see you getting the jumpstart! I've got my very first RED One clips from 2008 handy for any new Color science update and it is amazing how those clips have been getting better and better over the years.

Maybe it's time for a visit to your dad's workshop. :)

A beautiful success story. All the best to your continued RED and DOP/ Director life!

Well deserved Phil.... I am sure that we will all benefit from your testing and shooting....

Envious yes, but I can think of no one more perfect to get the new camera.

Finally. Good to know this baby in your hands. Congratulations! Wish you lots of fun!
Great story about your career, very inspirational. One day you should write a book, seriously.

...and i think you are the right guy to do a documentary about RED one day.

Thank you Peter. I appreciate it. There's lots to dig into. Luckily I have 2 shooting days this week to really get thing going.

Cheers Maik. I do think RED should put together a bit of a documentary or "written history" Jarred's recent interview for FDTimes certainly captured much about what we all didn't know about the early and very exciting days at RED.

Quick Weapon related bit.

RED Weapon Forged CF + MG PL Mount (with cap) + Weapon Top Handle + Weapon 7.0" LCD Touch + LEMO Adapter A + Base Expander + REDVOLT XL Module + REDVOLT XL + DSMC Quick Release Platform Pack + 2X 12 Inch 19mm Carbon Fiber Rods + 1TB MINI-MAG = 10 lbs 12.6 ounces or 4893 grams.

Why am I weighing that rig? That will likely be my "base" configuration for much of how I'm shooting coming up sans RED LCS, Mechanical Follow Focus, Matte Box, Lens, etc.....

Congrats Phil! Super stoked for you to have this new addition and thank you for the tireless contributions you provide to this community. You've become a fixture and a pillar of this community! I hope you're well!

Hard work always pays off. Enjoy the new camera. Go out and be dangerous!

Happy for you Phil. Look forward to benefiting from your order fulfillment by way of your testing and comments.

Just curious... if they are only at number 47 of the Forged orders, that sounds like around one per day. If they have 100, 200 of these it's going to be a lonnnnnnngggg time before even CF orders start shipping.

Oh well, winter is coming in the Northern Hemisphere. Guess we can just hibernate. '-)

Phil... I love you, but hate you right now. Every one of these that trickle out of RED HQ makes me wish I had paid for the Forged upgrade. Oh, well. I guess I can wait a bit longer. I keep telling myself that I really don't need the Weapon until 8K arrives anyway. Which is true.

Congrats. I'm sure you will do great things with Skully.
