  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN!

Same as Dragon, in 4K isn´t it?

Correct

Compression ratio seems two digits to one though even out of focus. On Epic Dragon with 512 mini-mag it's 9:1

So this would seem to be better specs in some regards than the Scarlet Dragon (though we don't yet know if it shoots above 4K Like the Scarlet) - but it appears to have a fixed / non interchangeable lens mount.

No clue where this will stand in the line-up.

Next dribble of info at 2am Eastern tomorrow...

Sometimes I think the teasing is actually more harmful than good for RED.

Jared commented on DJI Press release recently.... what did he say? BOOM! That's what you want.... Details that give you an impact.

I'm not a fan of teases that ultimately always lead to customers expecting MORE than the product delivers. This happens repeatedly. Set your watch by it.

Teases have their pros and cons.

Imagine this scenario. Monday morning rolls around and there's a new product for sale in the store or online. No information except for the specs page.

This leads to:
- The product not selling well at all because nobody knows about it.
- The product selling out or getting back ordered before some even "know about it".
- Potential buyers not given enough time to prepare financially and even "rigging up" appropriately.
- RED likes to take feedback from customers, if something just "existed" there's no time to "change things". Remember HDRx was not going to be in Epic Dragon initially.

Hints, teases, trade shows, press releases, etc. are not something exclusive to RED.

They do it similar to the ways other companies do it, with the minor difference being that the president of the company is up wicked late on social media and too excited about upcoming things and shoots out a cryptic image because he's so damn excited. About a month and a half before Weapon and Weapon 8K was announced he was literally jumping out of his skin wanting to tell the world.

We're all talking about it, so it's definitely not harmful.

It all comes down to teasing it the right way and managing expectations so that people are blown away and not underwhelmed when you release.

Either way, it's effective because we're talking.

If you manage expectations...yes...its effective.

If people are underwhelmed that is not effective.

Simply pointing out let down expectations are a side effect of not putting meat on the PR bone. Pretty sure underwhelmed customers are not the end goal. Looking forward to more info on the cam.

Eh, see thats the problem expectations aren't being managed. Its getting close to 3K for 3K, not quite the hype but its getting close. So you have some people who are expecting a RED for the price of an URSA Mini fully rigged and ready too shoot. Then you have others who are expecting it to be above the Scarlet Dragon specs and price wise. And a host of others in between and that leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths. There are a ton of people who see #4k4ALL and expect that they now will be able to shoot RED. There are a number of filmmakers who swore off RED after the long drawn out original Scarlet debacle because they felt letdown by the about face.

Let me put it this way, yes it helps with people who are devoted and appreciative of RED. It does not help with the people who are already on the fence or who to love take shots. Its the same thing with BMD you either love what they do or you hate it. And with BMD consistently giving out shipping dates that they never make it gives the critics more ammo. That being said its a way to tease to lessen heart break and speculation. How about you do what Sony did tease for a week and then release the damn info on the darn thing. But hey this has been happening for almost 10 years so what do I know?

Naturally.

The point is, it's an effective way to get people talking. Whether you deliver on the hype that you create is always another story. It's a dangerous game.

What's better, to tell people that you're as good as Roger Deakins and disappoint them but get the job, or tell them you're nothing special and lose the job to someone that says they're Roger Deakins?

In one scenario you might lose immediate money, in the other you might lose the chance for return work (customers) and your reputation.

I just hope its a different Sensor than Dragon

4K cropped on Dragon Sensor isn't going to produce the best image and then your stuck with MFT Focal Length Lenses

Please S35 4K Sensor Coverage or Bigger

I agree with you but I don't think that's the case. Maybe that will be the reason it's less expensive.

Teases have their pros and cons.

I'm not sure, I think there are only pros and only cons if a tease isn't revealed in full at the right time. A tease should spread and hype the word and when most people know about the tease it should be revealed. It's easy to spot when because other media outlets online report on it. If it goes on for too long all those people start speculating everything to hell and when it's revealed no one is happy.
Right now, the word of this camera is spreading on some sites. So the time to reveal should be soon.

Exactly! In my mind the reveal should be this Friday or Monday at the latest.

How you tease it and the perception of what you build vs. what is actually there, is a huge factor. Timing is a big factor, but it's nothing without substance. I think they should reveal the whole thing very soon though...if nothing else just to sweep up pre orders that people are placing on other cameras.

Someone on this board mentioned that they think this camera is going to replace the epic and i tend to agree with that. I think the scarlet is going to drop below 4 grand and the raven will be the middle child.

I think we would all be better off if they D/C'd Scarlet (with continued support), rather than gut it like a fish.

IF, big IF, the sensor is roughly 20mm wide - 4/3 territory - perhaps they will offer lens mounts that operate like the SpeedBooster to make using S35 glass simple, and even improve effective maximum stop.

BTW, I don't think it's in RED's DNA to make a camera that doesn't have interchangeable lens mounts.

Cheers - #19

I don't know man, that thing looks fixed to me.
