  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes, I personally would typically grade the material with a lower contrast curve, but that in effect increases the shadow noise. This test really isn't about how I would grade the material however. And even more honestly, similar to the Skin Tone lighting setup, it's best to add a bit more fill light like that anyways.

I see.. although not really looking for a REC 709 LUT or ARRI's LUT generator.

I was asking if you could post some of the ungraded Log C material from this test. Just a few frames maybe from the warehouse stuff? Thanks!

You can probably make multiple copies of the file in Google Drive and share in parallel (though that maybe not the best solution).
Is this your personal Google Drive or a G Suite one (it can be that G Suite has more quota)?

Had another idea for you.

You should ask Netflix and/or Apple to host these , since it would go through the same kind of re-encode they would do for home streaming distribution and we could watch it through a streaming CDN that isn’t YouTube.
 
How about rerendering out just that Warehouse scene (log3/log c), make that available for download?

And what's with the colour matching thing? If there's a need for colour correction - colour correct it then, ARRI correction I don't get...:biggrin:

Exactly... what I was wondering.

Would absolutely love to see the Log C stuff especially from the warehouse scene. It may very well look like that when I put a REC 709 Lut on top of it, but to me... I feel like I'm looking at about 7 stops of DR lol. I've shot in so many low light instances incredibly similar to this test on my Alexa and Log C never comes out this crunchy with REC 709 applied. I mean... it very well could look exactly like this test but I'm pretty interested to see for myself haha

It's not.
Scaling algae will chew on image detail softening 4K final.

Hi all, ProRes file update. I'm in Vegas at NAB. I've logged into my workstation at home and will be uploading it to Dropbox later today. Should be back online around 3pm/4pm if all goes right.
 
On youtube at least the first two minutes of skin/faces the Alexa footage looks like it got some sharpening form somewhere...
Either in camera, on ProRes output or via the Youtube conversion.

I've updated the download link to a ProRes 422 LT DCI 4K file from Dropbox, they apparently don't like files over 50GB, this one is about 30GB. It's in the first post.

Gotta bolt for now, but I'll be back later to tackle some "requests" for different image comparisons. Once NAB starts proper tomorrow however, I won't have much time to do anything until Thursday.
 
Halfway through the video and I kinda had a "stop the presses" moment in the skintone test (5:02 - 6:02). And it's not about the skintones. If you look at the many other colors in the background, especially the blue frame around the pegboard and the green sweater on the model 2nd from the right, you'll notice that the Alexa has IDENTICAL colors for 5600K and 3200K. The Monstro really matches Alexa well at 3200K on those two colors, but under daylight, those colors shift--a lot! The green sweater really desaturates and the blue border shifts from ever-so-slightly aqua to very much a non-greenish blue. Hmm...

Is this phenomenon due to a native color temp on one or both sensors? Or is this downstream in the CS somewhere?

Yup, sounds about right. The Alexa Classic was 5x the price of the R1 at launch. And truth be told.. if you put either one of those cameras in a capable DP's hands they both could still take some incredible images.

I Red has really been working on refining things of late and it shows.
The new ultra bright screen is a great example of one limitation solved. The work with Nvidia and GPU is of course also one of the most important improvements in ages which is going to change the way how we work. Also the newer firmwares are much more pleasant to use since they are so much faster.

One think I wish for in the future is faster Red mags so you can offload even faster.
