  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

So what's going on with ND? Forgive me it's hard to catch up. So the Komodo X won't have e-vnd built in, but E-VND may be available from RED in custom mounts, is that the idea? So a RF-EF EVND mount, a RF-PL EVND mount, etc?

Just trying to catch up and understand haha.
thx

I don’t mind eVND as a front module or as part of the mount but what might be a problem is the fact that I rock both EF and PL quite often. Buying 2x mounts with eVND each would be a significant expense, snd a super inefficient use of cash. For what it’s worth I do agree that internal ND should be a given on a camera like this in 2023.

I think for V-Raptor, I would agree. I think going back to the Original purpose of Komodo, i don't know that it makes sense in that context. There is/was no need to have a crash cam with internal NDs.

This camera IS more A-Cam focused. Would be nice to have internal NDs. But also, it would probably really hurt S35 V-Raptor sales, would make it closer to S35 VRaptor in size, and it would get the cost to be a lot higher. So it just doesn't make a lot of sense to do them internally at the moment.

That all being said, I almost always end up needing a Matte Box anyways, so im happy to use ND in front of my lens and i have solutions that even work well in Run'n'gun senarios.

Only RF-PL EVND adapter has been spoken about. I remember it was supposed to be announced in December or January. That's moved. They said it was to be announced soon.

Jarred has since shown the rear of the Komodo-X.

Back of camera is:
- WiFi Antennae
- USB-C Port
- SDI (probably 12G)
- Headphone Jack 3.5mm
- Audio (same connected as Raptor AND supports Phantom Power +48v) - big one for many including me
- EXT Port, shared across all DSMC3 bodies thus far
- DC IN
- Micro V-Mount (which we now can observe is how that module attaches)

Release for the V-Mount is upper back left, op-side.

Other notes. Camera Top is pretty much the same as Komodo from the looks of it. Might even be the same screen. Control layout is the same. Pogos seem to allude that this can take an RMI adapter which is the big one compared to Komodo.

AC Side. Ventilation. On/Off Switch, Speaker, Record Button

Camera Front. Lockable RF Mount and Record Button

Op Side, actually unknown as of yet, but we'll assume that's where the CFx slot is. Likely similar to Raptor if I had to guess, but could still be a tailgate design. Don't know if anything else lives there.

For sure it would have made a load of sense on V-Raptor too. As you suggest this Komodo-X seems to be more in line with an 'A-Cam' so I think we can look past the crash cam framing of original Komodo. This X being smaller and budget friendly I could see this being picked up for a wide variety of filmmaking styles, for which internal ND is just a no brainer. I work a lot in documentary and the lack of internals on my RED is a challenge for me almost on a daily basis.

Also agree if this had internal ND it would or sure hurt S35 V-Raptor sales. Even without it, I think there's a question as to whether this camera is stepping on S35 V-Raptor territory a bit. In either case I would hope RED are still somewhat in line with their original philosophy and are pushing forward to make the best camera no matter what.

I’m not really a high frame rates person. I was frankly more interested in built in eVND. Don’t think we’ll see that. Also, greater power draw means larger batteries… larger rig… larger everything. Part of the magic of the OG Komodo was the small size. I’m fearing the script might have been lost?

The original Komodo it will still be around no? And built in nd´s is not really a problem with the red electronical ND mount that fits both Komodo and raptor.

As it has a RF mount it can have a Revolva, Reds ND mount or breaktrough mount when it's actually becomes available. There is room to have such mount and still use EF glas with internal electronic focusing or PL mount. To put the ND´s inside of the RF mount does not make sense, simply its not much space in there and it would make the camera way bigger.

Get a Revolva if you got a DSMC 1 or 2, it solves all your ND hassles and does not cost much.

The "way bigger" argument is mute as any added module will make the camera bigger-- on top of needing to be lugged around and fiddled. It is one less moving part, it does make sense.

Again, I'm harping on LPL but then we are talking about an adapter into an adapter into the mount.

I think this camera will be a big deal. Just saying that. 80fps at 6K? And has better audio, etc? If this camera is 10K, this has the potential to really turn heads, and bring in a crowd.

How does an internal ND system under an RF mount not make sense? It's been done already in the C70 and Kinefinity's mount is much shallower, yet it has a FF internal e-nd.

I'd rather not have to buy multiple internal ND adapters that collect dust easily. Front filtration is also at times a nightmare due to internal reflections.

And if you're using a M mount lens, or a focal reducer, you cannot use an adapter with nd.

The fact that you can control the camera's internal ND wirelessly without touching the camera is super important when it comes to aerials or cranes. At least it makes the job more efficient.

Look what the RED team has done in the DSMC3 world is fantastic, no denying it. It made me switch back to RED, coming from the Arri world. But moving on, it's pretty much industry standard for digital cameras to have internal NDs .

I've had some folks not rent my camera or services solely on the fact that it did not have internal NDs. Yes, you can get the V-Raptor XL, but it's just too big for one man band.

As someone who is still rocking the dsmc1 dragon, I want the same if not better dynamic range, and definately no fixed patter noise! 6k60 at LQ would be great and global shutter is of course glorious.

I think it’s more of space inside the camera. You can absolutely fit one behind a RF mount. However, I think we’d need a totally different form to accommodate it. It would be a tight fit without making the camera taller or wider.

I totally get wanting internal NDs. I wish every camera had them. You just need the space in the camera.

Alright, I'm fine with a small bump in size without all the extra ports, as it is I'm rocking a cage.

Just so you know the Mavo edge's dimensions are W x H x D 4.9 x 4.3 x 4.2"
The Raptor's is 6.1 x 4.3 x 4.3"

Both FF, but the Mavo has a taller sensor. The mavo still has an internal e-nd system.

It's definitely possible putting a e-nd in the camera and beneath an RF mount. There is no doubt. Granted the V-Raptor has more horse power which may be taking up a bit more space in the body, but If the camera needs a tiny bump to fit the e-nd, then by all means.

It is absolutely not standard for high end digital cinema cameras to have built in NDs. I really don't get this either it's so trivial to use NDs in a variety of ways.

have you been to a rental house lately? It's almost all Mini LFs, A35's, Venice's. All have internal ND.

Definitely excited about that audio connector.
