  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DRAGON Scores Highest DXOMark Score ever.

Congrats team RED!!

I cannot wait until the Scarlet Dragon upgrade is available.

Question, what is the dragons "native" ISO? I have heard 250, 800, and 2000.

It depends I imagine on your noise floor determination. 250ISO if you cut off the bottom 2.5-3 stops as DXO did. (14.8 stops) If you feel that Dragon has 16 stops then you have 500-600ISO. If you want some highlight protection you can add another stop to your rating: 1000-1200 etc.

Hot stuff, especially when you consider that RED has said it is not nearly finished getting all they can from the sensor. Hoo-yah.

Fantastic news. I do love the image I'm getting from our Epic but who can say no to better color and more dynamic range!

The DRAGON does indeed breathe FIRE.

Can you explain how you came to these numbers? Not trying to be argumentative. Just curious. I read the whole test and didn't see anywhere where it was mentioned that the bottom end was cut off to reach the 14.8 stops determination. Only that the native ISO was 250.

And they say this: "The only real downside is that with the lack of analog gain, the Epic Dragon can’t maintain the same lead in performance at higher ISOs – but it’s an impressive achievement all the same."

Followed by: "To realize the full DxOMark sensor analysis we had to apply digital gains and then stress the darker part of the dynamic.
And so the problems begins….
First of all, a very small row/column noise was detected on the dynamic darker part, as you can check with the line detected on the autocorrelation shape below. This very small row/column noise does not impact the incredible dynamic range at the base ISO, but as digital gain is applied to achieve higher ISO settings, it becomes significant, affecting noise levels (and the respective amount of spatial correlations), thereby decreasing dynamic range (as you would expect)."

These statements just seem to contradict what you are saying. And also seem to contradict the basic understanding that I feel like most of us operate by. Which is that that by shooting at 800 ISO, on MX at least, you move your middle grey point to give you even distribution in the highlights and shadows and thus the broadest dynamic range. It appears that what this test is stating is that that's not true for this sensor.

Whoa... I mean we all knew already what Dragon is, the best sensor to have, but those news are great anyway. :) Congrats RED, again. Impressive results.

I know it's probably a trade secret and all but who designs and manufactures Red's sensors? They should be smoking cigars today too.

It does somehow go beyond Phil. Evin, Mark, John, Peter and me repeatedly stating "I have never shot with anything like this, you really need to experience it to get it. Forget the numbers, shoot it!".
And me rambling about "feel" and "colors".

Jim, Jarred, Graeme and all... THIS is good stuff! :)

Congrats.

All I can say is I came off a tough shoot here in Dubai to an email from my Los Angeles AC about the article....

It is pretty sweet..... Jim and Jarred and the team should be smiling.....

Congrats! Makes me even more excited to get my hands on a Dragon!

This is crazy cool! And as I udnerstand they did not take the following into account:

HDRx
New OLPF
ADD

With the above added I wonder where the result score would land.. :)

It's nuts, can not really grasp that I have one of those sitting on my desk... I'm smacked booked in my Flame so I do not have time to go out on the shoots but this baby will be rolling for 1 week straight now. This weekend we push our first dragon fashion commercial through the pipe, looking forward to it. The Photographer who shot it just shaked his head when I tried to explain to him that what was sitting on the tripod was possibly the best imager availabe... And yes, I just sent him the link to this little test, together with some ADD snaps from his shoot.

Thank you RED for making the best possible and well within reach, this Dragon stuff you sell way to low priced, it's paid of within the first two weeks which is ridiculous. LOL.

Of course, they are already posting about comparing a $2K camera to a $30K camera, "winning the field against a bunch of DSLRs", etc. over on CML :)

guess they missed the part about the $40,000 Phase Ones. '-)
