  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DRAGON Scores Highest DXOMark Score ever.

Can you explain how you came to these numbers? Not trying to be argumentative. Just curious. I read the whole test and didn't see anywhere where it was mentioned that the bottom end was cut off to reach the 14.8 stops determination. Only that the native ISO was 250.

I just used the process of elimination. They state in the charts that it's Landscape 14.8 stops (Dynamic Range EVs). The only subjective end of a sensor DR test is in the floor so if they conclude it has less than 16 stops of dynamic range they presumably are determining that the shadows are less usable. Clamping the shadows would result in a lower ISO.

It's a shame he isn't here to celebrate this with us, his peeps. There should be an occasional empty post for us to imagine his presence, at least... maybe using Jarred's account.

Jim still sits beside me most days and he still reads every post...

Well, they did... I kinda pu that bit in.

Another thing everyone is missing in this test is that the Dragon shoots that quality at up to 80fps in motion. None of those camera video modes are anywhere near it's stills quality and in no way could ever shoot a sustained 80fps at their stills quality. They are just such RED haters that they have to come up with something negative to say. I bet if it was the Alexa they would be praising the test haha.

I doubt an Alexa would outperform most nikons in stills acquisition.

Now, just translate that to motion capture. :)

Of course, they are already posting about comparing a $2K camera to a $30K camera, "winning the field against a bunch of DSLRs", etc. over on CML :)

… not all the cameras are 2k on DXOMark. The phase one IQ180 is over 40k (i think) and the much hyped Canon 1DX (same sensor as 1DC) comes in with a "pro" price tag too. Its nice to see the Dragon smoke canon's flagship sensor/RAW image capture at any frame rate. But kudos to canon marketing; with that sub par offering (25th overall) still able to pull the wool over the eyes of much of the industry.

Congratulations Red! Beating the D800 for still work was no small feat. Did anyone mention that the dragon also has a "video" mode :)

It's funny how alot of people seem to forget what the S stands for in DSMC. We are very proud that the top still photographers in the world are shooting RED, that was always one of our goals from the very beginning. It is why we make Leica and Canon and Nikon mounts for our cameras.

It is amazing to me how far some people need to reach just to sling arrows.

We work hard for this stuff.. I wish people would just let it go already.

you are right.

RED is not just disruptive technology (industry changing) but it's also enabling technology (a digital still motion system) and it has been this way from the first red one (refined with the epic) but the stills from motion has been an enormous upside.

Unfortunately not everyone likes it when things move fast or are forced to move fast, but hey to quote Robert Duval, "you either fight or surf", right?

you are where you are because many people, "get it" don't loose sight of the positives in that :)

Congrats to the whole RED team for this... nothing like having a industry paper show the (almost) current status of what Dragon can do. And as been mentioned by several - there is nothing like getting your hands on one and seeing your own results. Thanks to Jim's vision and perseverance to make this a tool we can all use. Looking forward to where all this takes us next.

Oh yeah! Just ordered Dragon upgrade. I was waiting for the bugs to get worked out and feel confident that by the time I get my upgrade it will be rock solid (and probably is already with the new OLPF and color science coming soon). Thanks Red.
