  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Very proud of this one.

The folks over at DXOmark, who have become the bible of camera testing , have tested the Dragon and the results are pretty incredible.

The Dragon rose above all still cameras tested before it, including the best full frame and medium format cameras.

Combining the best imaging sensor with the ability to shoot 100 frames per second opens up a whole new world of imaging to photographers.

Dynamic Range 14.8 EVs...?

The Dragon sensor is off the chart amazing.

Now ... let's make one or two new modules that solve 90% of the issues with DSMC system with ACs / Operators and we can start takin' names :)

This one actually really, really, really matters.

DXO is a very technical and well respected organization. I wrote them over a year ago asking them to include R3D snapshot support. Actully DXO is another reason to add DUMB MOUNT LENS META DATA to the menu system in the EPIC. Now, more important than ever.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
-As the new leader in this category, the prototype Epic Dragon surpasses the Phase One P65+ and P65+ HR models in color sensitivity, and it marginally exceeds the mighty Phase One IQ180 digital back in our rankings.

-While every effort was made to ensure the Epic Dragon adhered to our rigid testing protocols and that the results passed all the tests we performed, it’s clear the scores reflect a significantly different approach to image acquisition.

-It’s also worth noting that the Dragon’s native sensitivity is ISO 250 and measured at 104, while all other sensitivities were obtained by digital gain.

-For the tests, the camera was set to full 6k resolution at 23.98 fps, 16 bit and RC 5:1 compression.

-The highest color sensitivity ever measured: exceptionally low noise at the base ISO.

THIS IS HUGE>

-The headline news is, of course, that of the Dragon’s exceptionally low noise levels. The SNR (signal/noise ratio) curve shown above is simply outstanding - it’s higher than the Nikon D4’s curve for the whole of that sensor’s signal response. The shape of the response curve is interesting as well.

-Close to saturation point, it shows a kind of plateau or leveling off, which indicates that the SNR is mostly limited by some pixel response non uniformity and not by the photonic noise.

This noise curve, coupled with a good color response, leads to a very high color sensitivity. At the pixel level (screen mode), the color sensitivity is simply the best ever measured. We normally calculate color sensitivity using an 8-bit output sRGB colorspace. In this case, however, the 8-bit sRGB color space was not large enough to accurately represent the color sensitivity of the Epic Dragon. As a result, we had to switch to a 16-bit sRGB color space!

THIS IS ALSO HUGE

-Conventional DSLRs benefit from Analog gain that seems to amplify read noise and fix pattern noise in a smaller way than a pure digital Gain. This explains, despite its quality, why the Epic Dragon has lower low-light performances than the top DSLRs. So for cameras, where the lighting can’t be controlled, analog gain is preferred. That’s not such a high priority with a cinema camera, but the Epic Dragon produces very clean looking files and can be used safely up to nearby ISO 3000, with an excellent image quality.

Jarred, Jim and the whole RED Team must be happy to read this...

-While the results and quality of output from this specially-adapted Epic Dragon are awesome, it’s all the more extraordinary, considering the sensor size and pixel pitch. It’s hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by the Dragon’s performance (except maybe at extremely high ISO)SNIP
While this will take some time to filter down to consumer level HD-DSLRs, this new technology just may forever change the way both footage and stills are shot in the future

14.8 EV is conservative, but I imagine represents the required shadow noise results a stills shooter would expect.

I wonder if they were privy to ADD? So much can change overnight :)

I like them apples.

I think you are right on that John. That is exactly how they qualified it in the test.

:)

If there was some way to add ADD in camera along with the anticipated Dragon Color improvement, I think they would have just declared Dragon nonpareil.

I wonder if other camera companies see these results and pat themselves on the back for whatever achievement they are recognized for... while RED may be looking at the few categories they are not tops in and work on that? If so, that would explain a lot about how even these results are improved by things like ADD that aren't even measured in the tests shown.

What a read! Very impressive. They sound really impressed as well. Can´t wait for our number to come up.

Had to drag this out :)

Yep...that is all that is missing....

Jeez guys. This has probably been one of the best pieces of RED news ever!
30 seconds to enjoy it wouldn't be too bad. :)
