  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quote...

Actually my full frame scans of ASA 400 color negs have lots of noise/grain in them....far more noise than my Canon 5D Mark II at 400 ISO.

And Cine 35mm is about half the size, and about twice the grain of still neg wouldn't you agree?

I see grain at the cinemas all the time with 400 ASA film. However I LOVE film grain... so don't get me wrong, I just would prefer to add it during post.

Don't apologize Martin. I have been a 35mm film zealot for the past 24 years and it took Red to break me. I totally agree that you want to start pristine so you can manipulate from there. How many remember the Ikegami EC-35? "The end of film" was all over the marketing material (and has been countless times since then). Flash forward to 2008 and the first time I let go from my pre-disposed ideas. I have a Red One and i am looking forward to my Epic-X trade-in. BRING IT ON!

That's great news Jim. I think ISO 500 with very little to no noise is huge. This would make many of the DPs I work with very happy. Not that they are complaining too much about the images now, but certainly having low light capability is going to be very welcome news.

Has the noise pattern changed at all with the new sensor?

Can't wait to check this out.

Anyone up for a "Get David Mullen A New Beta Red For XMas" petition or something?

Sure, as long as you sign the "Get Steve Sherrick a new beta RED for Xmas". On second thought, I should probably let a few others cut in front of me in line like Neill Blomkamp and others. But I'd still love one eventually. :-)

I'd love to see comparison shots of the X at 500 vis-a-vis the One at 320. Unfortunately, that's only 2/3rds of a stop difference in light sensitivity. Is there any word on the dynamic range issue? Are we expecting 1.5 stops more at the same noise levels??? I honestly can't remember.

Stephen

We are putting together some RED ONE Mysterium-X cameras for upgrade testing and a couple of high profile directors have run them through their paces. The 1st AC had a big smile on his face after seeing the results and gave this quote.

"To me, the new sensor is the biggest leap I've seen RED achieve. We rated the sensor at ISO 500 and did not see any noise in the blacks in low level lighting situations. The image is super clean." Steve Meizler

1st Assistant Camera on Saving Private Ryan, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Ocean's Twelve, War of the Worlds, Ché, The Informant, Social Network, among several others. Steve has been 1st AC on four feature films (and a few commercials) shot on RED...

I expect that we will have more quotes as the cameras get into the hands of a few more pros.

Jim

like we need these quotes? seriously Build 21 Redcode 42 is all the validation I need... as was the compressed 2/3 sensor shots months ago... anything up from there is unfathomable really...

and WTF? deep video knowledge? huh? this is a digital CINEMA camera, not a video camera...

I say the hell with the pacifying the lame naysayers, Jim, they dont deserve this info. but thanks for taking the time...

I will beg borrow and steal to test two of these supercharged bad boys in double digits below zero.

Any chance we might be seeing some teaser samples now Jim? Maybe it is time for a human! :)

Sounds promising Jim, but i'f we are considering that subjective evaluations are worth quoting, I'd be looking for one from a craft professional with a deep background in video.

Mike Brennan

Mike... I think you were the one that questioned the veracity of my statement that the purple sun issue was gone with Mysterium-X? And now you want a pro video specialist to evaluate the quality of M-X instead of a trained professional in the movie world? Who exactly did you have in mind?

Jim

Why not Jim, we in Chennai, India evaluate M-X since we use Red One for more feature films than any other country / Film Industry so far?

10 feature films shot / released and another 25 in pipeline and 100s of commercial, corporate video, music video etc., We, tamil film industry is proud to associate with Red One.

actually that was me that was questioning the sun spot on Mysterium X. Different Mike:-)
I'll take your word for it that it will be gone in the new sensor. Also, I'm sure whoever is lucky enough and hand picked by you and your team to get to test the new sensor is more than qualified to give a valid quote :-)

Hi Jim,

I guess Mike had himself in mind.

Best,

Stephen

The purple sun issue is gone with Mysterium-X. The Esquire Magazine shoot was shot with Mysterium-X but processed with RED ONE (Mysterium) software. Hence the confusion.
