  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A faster sensor is great but it's not the limiting issue with the Red One. That issue is latitude. Every feature I've seen projected shot on Red (Knowing, Che, Van Diemen's Land, District 9) has had the same issue with direct sunlit, high-contrast scenes burning out or being too contrasty. Am I correct that M-X is to have a stop more?

I can't wait.

So...

What's the best move for someone like me who wants to upgrade to Epic ?

Upgrade RED ONE to MysX and then buy Epic, or just buy the EPIC ?

Since we have no idea about the schedules, it's difficult to take a decision.

Stu,

It mostly depends on post work.
There is a trend today to give a lot of contrast to images in post work.
I've made images in full sun, white shirts etc...that look absolutely gorgeous and neutral.

More DR is welcome for sure, but the RED ONE has very good DR right now.

I agree that there is often a lot of contrast added during post.

I personally heavily dislike this look. I have blu-rays of movies shot on film that
have been basically ruined by having their blacks crushed etc.:nopity::nopity::nopity:

Just as long as the new sensor doesn't have those annoying vertical lines in the noise I'll be happy as heck.

Epic/X two questions

Epic/X two questions

I think you are going to need to be more specific... when you tell everyone what stock you are talking about and if it is indeed totally grain free, you just may bring film back from the dead :)

Film is not dead, at least the cans sitting in my fridge for the last three years.

Two questions:

1. Will Epic / X sync with MOCO systems via a sync pulse?

2. Will Epic / X in Stills mode be able to shoot long exposure?

Mods if this is not the place to ask these questions please move them to the appropriate place.

Jim,

In what is generally very subjective craft environment, noise and sensitivity are two aspects of a sensor that can be compared camera against camera in a meaningful (almost!) empirical way.

Call them what you like but someone who can measure noise and sensitivity on a bench in a meaningful way, rather than relying on a subjective evaluation is what I would as a DP, prefer to evaluate from a manufacturer.

WOah?

Slap me silly and call me stupid... never thought about long exposures when shooting stills with the Epic!

Why not?

I've been waiting for this since the R1. Hoping that I wouldn't need to purchase a separate DSLR just so I could shoot some fancy time lapse.

The next question I have but i think it has already been answered.

3. Has the rolling shutter / flash, strobe issue been eliminated or reduced?

While I understand that you guys are brilliant and I give you all the credit in the world for the technological achievements you've already accomplished, at some point you gotta let them dawgs hunt. You can get caught up in a never ending improvements cycle and some Canon or Sony secret product comes out and tramples all over your bottom line. Now, I'm not saying let the customers be beta testers like MS or something like that. But, if you have a working product that is significantly improved over previous models and functionally stable... let 'er rip. We are believers in your products and your company(as far as I can tell) and most of us would probably forgive a few necessary tweaks that are always inevitable. Comon man...sell Epics and Scarlets like hotcakes.

RED already learned with the past Roger.

Beta testing is not good for RED's image as a company.

Release rock solid products that will only get your status up... That's the way to go.

The white dog ( snowflake ) seems like so long ago :) It's amazing how fast the color science and the sensor pixies are improving.. from the Dog, to the Esquire shoot, to where we are now.

Not more than 20 minutes ago another imaging breakthrough was just made by the engineers with the new sensor.... I have a feeling you guys are going to be very happy with what you see.

Oh boy...
My dream camera is clean enough at ISO 800.

If I can get that with the 2/3" Scarlet I'll be more than happy... Ok, maybe I'm asking too much and maybe that will only be possible with the S35 versions.

But I don't wanna limit my dreams.

Pietro, I share your dream :), but clean at ISO 500 is already making me drool :)

This is VERY good news Jim...thanks for sharing that

Hmm, this got me thinking ...

- Grab an uncompressed frame from a blank white board/wall at specific ISO setting with different cameras configured to match settings (color temp, resolution, fov, etc) as much as possible.
- Compress the images using the exact same lossless compression settings for both (convert them to PNG).

The image with the higher file size will have more noise. Also the results are quantifiable (higher the file size, the more noise).

Where's the line? I have a little "R" saving my place....

From Greg Williams:

"Mysterium-X is the bridge I was looking for between the stills and
movie world. The original Mysterium served me very well on my Red One
but I was always pushing the boundaries with the files and working on
stories for which the quality worked as a cinematic effect, but I could
not put my hand on heart to say it compared to what I could pull out
of a DSLR.

Mysterium-X changes all that. Detail in blacks, use in tungsten light
and a tremendously improved dynamic range put the stills right up
there. This sensor WILL change how photographers work in a huge way
and forever.

As a result of the new lighter Epic camera I believe that 90% of the
photographers, who can afford the new camera, will all become
photographer/directors within the next 3 years. The first true Digital
stills motion camera is here. Exciting times."

Greg Williams

IMO that really hits the nail on the head...

Winds of change are blowing...
