  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quickplate V-Lock Battery module ready to ship

The Quick Plate I received is working with batteries that report battery percentages, but the Endura 10s I threw on as a test doesn't work--Epic reports 0% battery capacity, displays a low power warning and starts a 30 second power count down. Doesn't seem to switch over to voltage readout as it would if power was coming in via DC input and a battery belt plate, so thinks the battery is depleted when it's not. Upgraded camera to 5.1.23 beta firmware to test with.

This just an issue with the unit I have, or anyone else happen to test with a non-REDBrick/percentage reporting battery and see similar?

Hi Mark same issue here, have you found a Solution yet?

Again I ask, will this ever be made with AB mount?

Working with a Quick Plate attached to the +1 module and can't get any power. Using firmware 5.1.23. Any ideas?

thanks tom.

does anyone know the exact type of lemo connectors (right angle) i have to order for soldering my own cables for using my accessories via the power outlets on the v mount plate? these are not the same as on the pro i/o module or the +1 module.
:-(

Norbert -

With respect to Lemo connectors you need to know the size, the number of pins, and if it's straight or right angle -

"00" is the size of the small SYNC and CTRL ports on DSMC cameras - "0b" is the next size up - that is the size of the 4-pin connector on the +1 module, the 2-pin connector on the Quickplate module, standard 5-pin timecode cable connectors, etc. - next size up is the "1b" - the size of the power connector on the DSMC - then "2b" is next size up - that's the size of the power connector on the RED ONE.
.30X. where "X" = number of pins

FHG = right angle
FGG = straight plug

4-pin straight male plug = Lemo FGG.0B.304.CLAD52Z Straight Plug Cable Collet
4-pin right angle male plug = Lemo FHG.0B.304.CLAD52 Plug 90 Degree CdG 4Cts C-C

2-pin straight male plug = Lemo FGG.0B.302.CLAD52Z Straight Plug Cable Collet
2-pin right angle male plug = Lemo FHG.0B.302.CLAD52Z Plug 90 Degree Cable Collet

Lemo connections protected?

Lemo connections protected?

Does anyone know if these Lemo outputs are protected?
Meaning is there an internal circuit breaker or fuse?
Is this breaker self-resetting?
or...
Is this internal fuse accessible and replaceable?

Also, what is the pin configuration for polarity?

cheers,
Jeff Barklage, s.o.c.

Thanks Mark,
Now for the BIG question: are these outputs protected with either a fuse or breaker?
As we ALL know, cables get pulled, snagged, bent, twisted, stretched, etc... in normal production...if there happens to be a dead short, will this blow the camera or be caught beforehand by a breaker or fuse?
Anyone?

There is not a user replaceable fuse. I'm not sure what happens if you short these outputs - I haven't been motivated to try that :)

But I have have learned, over many years, to seriously respect and source high-quality made-in-the USA cables - with proper strain relief - even if they cost a premium - which they do. Ask any top steadicam operator how much they have invested in cables :)

I work with a lot of different AC's across the country..and some of their kit dates back to film days with CineTapes that are 11-pin Fisher connectors. Several of my MicroForce units still have 11-pin Fisher connections because that WAS the industry standard for all 12vDC camera accessories for decades. Thus I have several custom 11-pin Fisher to D-Tap adapters.
Now, with the flavor of the week becoming 2-pin Lemo [which is logical, but yet another adapter to have made], i am sure many many AC's will still have those D-Tap connectons on the power cables for their TV-Logic or whatever brand of on-board monitor they use, or their CineTape or work lights, etc..
So, knowing that I will need to integrate my system into many others, I need to make darn sure that if a short happens, my camera doesn't explode! Maybe an in-line fuse system will have to become part of my kit...bulky, but if Red hasn't designed a fail-safe electrical system into this module, it is a gamble I'd rather not take on production's dime, with my gear.
Yes, having great cables is the best bet, but we have to look out for any & all circumstances on set.
I have contacted RED to get their answer on this...I did receive my Module today and really look forward to putting it into use. I just want to watch my back in case ANYTHING happens.

Mark, is there any news on the 2-pin Lemo cable systems you mentioned earlier? A vendor you knew that was about to create a series of these? Maybe a 5-unit buy?

I'm in the process of creating an entire line of cables right now with a manufacturer based on my specifications for our rental inventory - moving everything to 2-pin lemo - ARRI wireless, Prestons, Cinetape, BOXX wireless - everything. Waiting for my first batch of cables to test - should be a week or so. Let's see if they can make me happy first - then, if there's an interest with the community - I can hook something up :) But I'm not going for cheap - I'm going for high quality and sexy - not to mention the correct length, which everyone gets wrong :)

Mark, I am with you!
Too long cables are the bane of our existence...
I am thinking of going the same route: 2-pin Lemos on all 12vDV accessories.
I might even buy a few spare TV-Logic 2-pin Lemo power cables and let the AC's use them when working my system...of course, I'll have to make sure I get them back :-)
I'll have to check with Preston to see if they have MicroFroce cables in 2-pin..also with Bartech, Cinematography Electronics [CineTape], etc....
2-pin is the MOST logical..it is a very tiny connector..a lot smaller than the 11-pin Fischer's of olde.

I received mine today. Did a quick test, powers my camera alright but indeed does not work with 4.0.18, as is mentioned on the product's page: "requires firmware v5.1.14 or later", so time to go beta...
Latest beta v5.1.26 from October 31st.
Cheers,
Damien

hi damien, may i ask when did you order it?

thanks, norbert

Problem with IDX battery and Quickplate Module

With a full IDX battery and the Quickplate Module, the Epic powers up long enough to say that it has 0% battery and then shuts off (Epic Firmware Beta Version: v5.1.23--latest). It works with Red Bricks though. Beta firmware issue?

Same issue here with a third party battery

Still waiting for mine ordered on the 8th of September.
