  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Really hope there's Internal ND behind that mount. I'd imagine with no fans under it now there's room to put it underneath. Looks good though, we've seen a lot now it comes down to specs and delivery time.

Can't wait to see this bad boy with a newly designed Side Handle! I always use the current one, particularly on Star Trek Into Darkness behind the scenes - getting the camera off my shoulder and into tight spaces! My guess is the right side's LCD/menu/scrollwheel panel pop off with 4 screws and are replaced with the new Side Handle. Mmm and it'll be much lighter! :)

Yep. The more I read the less I keep.

While it might be true that with a new body style, presumably new processing power and presumably newer, perhaps smaller, perhaps more functional modular hardware specific to new hardware body style, the people moving up to weapon may need to carefully plan their new modules.

There is another side to this.

all of those modules still work in the EPIC and Scarlett ecosystem. There are and will be many of those cameras around for years to come and in a sense it lets a whole generation of filmmakers staying with dragon or MX to accessorize their cameras with stuff that may be available in the used marketplace.

This is is actually a part i like about the red ecosystem as a young filmmaker or company could get into RED Scarlett or epic MX or dragon very reasonably and accessorize that camera quite nicely for a fraction of the cost. so people can stay one generation epic dragon or two generations, epic MX back and still have camera that outperform most of the camera in the marketplace.

It's not all bad and staying current, in macs or pcs or other hardware, has always been where the top dollars are dolled out. One generation back can be a very good position for an upstart while still being very competitive (image wise) in the marketplace.

I'm gonna say that there are no internal ND's; unless you throw on the motion mount.

Here's a video guess.

2x evf or touch screen
1x hdmi
1x hdsdi
legacy module

So 4 separate output streams, two for the camera dept and two out to "other" monitors.

But what I think will be really cool (and this is the real guess) is the 4 different LUTs (3dcube?) you can put on the outputs. :)

cue mark at offhollywood doing cartwheels if my guess is correct. :)

If they include LUT compatibility this camera is the end all be all.

Here is an audio guess.

Built in scratch mics in front and a stereo input, rear. That would give you four channels on board. Handy.

I don't care what the connector is, I just hope there are two discrete inputs that can provide phantom power.

It should fit fine. If you include the integrated top plate, Weapon is 'about' the same height as Epic/Scarlet. Width is about the same, it is of course shorter, but thats not a problem with your cage.

Jarred, is the height of optical center from the bottom of the camera the same?

Jarred, please and is the same too the distance between the focal plane and the DSMC Mount ?
And the bottom holes (3/8 and 1/4) are in the same position ?
I ask that, because i use my Epic in underwater housing so i'd like to know if I will be able to adapt the new Weapon !
Thanks

This looks so fucking cool, love it!!! Can't wait for all the specs and details!

Fuck yeah. The body redesgin kills.
This looks soooooooo much better to work with.

And it "looks" fucking awesome.

Good work.

Existing handle is not compatible with Weapon. No idea yet if there is a new handle in the works. I hope they do!

I have a suspicion the new handle will be one of the big reveals at NAB.... it is a VVeapon after all

Doesn't the motion mount already provide "in-camera ND" functionality? Or i missing something...

But it's a loss of ~1.5 stops at it's lowest setting, which means you cannot leave it on the camera at all times.

+1 on these questions and whether the power button is the same spot relative to the mounting holes and height.

Seems to me that the optical center is most likely to be the same given the need to adapt to existing rod systems.

No disrespect, but everybody is talking about Integrated Nds, Side handle and positions of the screw..

Can we talk about the "Basics"?
I've just rewatched some movies shot on Film: "Watchmen", "Benjamin Button" and "Out of the furnace" and Damn!!! We are crazily far from Film, truly..
I know it has ben discussed hundreds times here but for "True Cinema", film stays the obvious way to go..

Benoit Debie (Cinematographer of "Spring Breakers" and "Enter the Void") was talking about that recently, and he shares the exact same thought, "the digital doesn't compete the film yet" neither in color nor in dynamic range)

I'm a Red owner, and i cant't wait for this time when i'll be able to shoot with a little digital Camera (Weapon?) what i can shoot with a 35mm film one..

So my question is (and i hope it will be the case) will the Red Weapon show improvements in term of "Color Science, Texture, Dynamic Range and Low Light Capabilities" ?

Again, i hope it will..

Jarred mentioned that Weapon will squeeze more out of Dragon sensor. I wouldn't hope for a vast improvement though, that is reserved for a next sensor iteration.

I'm personally happy with where RED's at with color science, texture, dynamic range but I can see the more seasoned vets wanting those tweaks to squeeze everything they can out of the camera. My stuff doesn't look anywhere near Oscar worthy but I attribute that to the guy behind the camera, me. I completely agree that low-light could be improved and I think a lot have been inquiring about it with this upgrade. I'm at a point where I can't (personally) distinguish between a great RED-shot film and a great film-shot film. So, with respect to my personal case, integrated NDs, low light improvements, integrated wireless, better audio are all features that would pretty much sell me on the upgrade for a corporate shooter's perspective (unless it's priced ridiculously - in that case, I'll stick with Epic Dragon). As a narrative shooter, the Epic Dragon holds its ground as is, no upgrade necessary. I can make this camera work for me for a long time. I honestly think these short intervals between upgrades are getting ridiculous though.

Epic MX was already on par with some film stocks, not the best ones I agree, but Dragon ?
If you can't get film quality picture from a Dragon, it's a matter of "raw" skills and knowledge of the sensor.

Digital camera don't have the same curves, of course, but Arri's newest sensor or Red Dragon at this point of quality, there is no better or worse, it's just different. Like films stocks.

Color science of DC2 is great, Texture on the Dragon is awesome and very different of any competitors, dynamic range is enough (when will we stop really ?), low light can be enhanced without swapping OLPF, though I agree.

I have a largely different opinion regarding Dragon in particular when compared with film. And I'm betting I've scanned in, colored, recorded out, and read more density wedges than the average joe.

And I've been able to post samples showing some of my tests and research.

I personally feel that RED Dragon is the first true film replacement in our industry. I also know for a fact 3 major filmmakers agree with this sentiment.

The Color Science, Dynamic Range, and Resolution/Format Relevance are "there". While there will be improvements in the future for sure, we've already surpassed or "matched" film in a few ways.

Here's a wave shot on Dragon. There's a fair bit of DR in there, not to mention some lovely rich blue.
