  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

yes the no cable mounting (if it is ONLY in the place we have seen it on Weapon) is really just for a solo shooter doing a very small configuration. I used to do a lot of skate board videos riding with the camera, this would be a good spot for the monitor to be for that, and add in the new trigger handle and you have a very small, clean adventurecam

I have the 5" monitor attached to the top of the body in over 50% of the times I use it, so for me the new one seems perfect.
Also with the 5" at least, i never had any problems with the screen in cold weather and a lot of my shooting is in the mountains during cold winter.

I like the no cable and tool less mounting approach. Old monitors will soon cost a whole lot less as soon as weapon is out. So if we then want a big AC screen it will be really easy to pick up a used 9" and use that on the second monitor out of the weapon.

you have to look at it in a positive way. RED release a complete new eco system... Possibly they make a shitload of money selling it, but that is not the only thing that will happen. As when everyone that are into having the latest and greatest goes ahead and buy the new stuff then all the old stuff will for sure trickle down to the much greater group of people that settle for the "used to be latest and greatest gear" for sure this forum will be flooded with FS threads filled with that kind of stuff. And as we all know, a scarlet MX for example, is as far as I know at least, a very capable camera, so is an Red One MX.

Personally I think this third round of eco system change will be what really brings camera tech to the masses. As rental houses and such need to provide the latest and greatest and a lot of them will jump on weapon, but if you shoot your indy feature I´m sure an old Epic will do just fine and this weapon deal is what will bring down the MX cameras to fit into even the tightest of budgets. So again what RED does is really helping out the little guy even if they just release high end new stuff. And this new module connector and screen will ensure that all the indy guys have plenty of accessories to choose from and I´m sure the prices will be crazy good.

Jarred is on a roll!

I know folks keep suggesting that the side control "switchblade replacement" module is detachable, but in all the pics I've seen (as in this one), it appears bolted on.

Can you remove your lens mounts? They are bolted on as well :)

Certainly true... but that's not what I was getting at.

Folks have suggested the side control module could be "snapped" off and operated remotely... in effect replacing the RedMote and Swichblade with one unit.

It doesn't appear that way.

I keep thinking that the more pictures I see, but I still really hope that upside down L can turn into a redmote. But I'd be just as happy, probably happier, with Redlink inside the camera.

Because the Redmote was so reliable off camera? I think RED are smart here to keep it bolted on camera. Use Foolcontrol or other apps to control the cam wirelessly...

I suspect you will be able to unscrew four bolts and switch to a different module in a jiffy.

Four bolts for the OLPF
Four bolts for a lens mount
Four bolts for a side module.

Also probably you could remove it to lighten it a bit for gimbal work etc. so perhaps there is just a very lightweight blank rubber or carbon cover as well.

Nice and tidy. :)

I'd place my bet on the side module having an internal battery and being capable of wireless operation like the RedMote. I like the idea that I can leave it attached most of the time, but pop it off when the situation warrants. The RedMote concept was good, the execution...

As long as I know I can solve any wireless or power issues by snapping it onto the camera, I'm stoked. I'd also wager that RDC has over-engineered the heck out of the Weapon side piece - with the benefit of what they learned from the RedMote program.

Cheers - #19

I suspect the 4 bolts on the controller just retain an outer shell. They are probably attached to a deeper unit that may, indeed, be a detachable remote control unit.

Something that may be interesting to consider on the Weapon body is a better auto-focus system and the addition of analog gain to help with the low-light capabilities.

Up to this point, the only downside to the Dragon sensor was the lack of analog gain (to speak of) and thus the lack of usable ISOs above 2000. Also, auto-focus wouldn't help myself as I run all manual lenses; however, there are a bunch of users with strictly EOS lenses on their kits. A better auto focus system would be huge for them.

No camera is perfect, but adding analog gain and auto-focus would make it nearly perfect for all-around shooting in any environment.

I guess the option i like the most is the wifi, that is probably built in to allow for the usage of apps like RED's own and my favorite Foolcontrol.

My biggest question now is to decide wether i should already have my CF at NAB for the upgrade or not. I am ready to take it, but my business gently asks me not to....

any insights?

You can't drop off your camera at NAB unfortunately.

Hey Bob, is that a confirmed info? Will be my first NAB, so thanks for the reply anyway!
