  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey Jarred-
Will there be a new RED drive? Something like a $1,000 dollar, 640 or 750GB module that clicks right in to the back, and than has FW and SATA ports on the side, so the module itself can be offloaded just like the old RED drive? I think this could be very useful, and more economical for many. I was hoping to use SSD as my high capacity media with my Scarlet, but with the module at $1500 without the media itself, I think it may be a few years before that comes around. So if there were a DSMC-centric new RED drive, that'd really be great. Thanks!
Peace,

-Harry

Hey Harry, unfortunately to make such a module the cost point would go against the reasons of you wanting one... There will be a module with a RED DRIVE port on it though for you to use existing RED DRIVES if you so desire.

Kinda suspected that was the case. Well, I think I'll start with a few shiny new CF cards and then start saving some pennies for the SSD module down the road. Gotta say, it's really nice for those of us who aren't ready for the cash outlay at the get go to be able to build the camera as we save, but still use it from the beginning. Somehow I don't see Sony selling me just the lens and sensor, and sending me the back of an EX1 when I get the rest of the money ;)
Anyway Jarred, thanks for the info. Take it easy man.
Peace,

-Harry

sounds like a good plan Harry :)

We recently bough our first RED (Sep 2009) and after yesterday's announcement we are definitely going to want to upgrade to EPIC. Our budget is not unlimited and given the thirty days we'll have to decide which stage to join in on the upgrade process it would be really useful to know as soon as possible which of our current RED accessories will be compatible with EPIC and which one's we'll definitely need to replace.

If anyone knows which accessories are going to be compatible with EPIC could they list them here? From the text of the announcement itself the Pro 7" LCD is compatible, and I imagine the current EVF will be too, unless only the BOMB EVF will work with EPIC? Jarred also mentions that there'll be a special module to allow use of the existing RED DRIVES.

I've read through all 60+ pages of replies here to try and garner as much as I can of the new features, but didn't find anything on the above - sorry if I missed it - it is incredibly exciting at the same time.

What is the make/model tripod head shown here?

The current EVF and 5" LCD are compatible with the EPIC. The RED Bricks are also compatible.

That is the Cartoni Delta Rosso... I love that head.

The little digital displays for Tilt drag and balance are great.

Lovin how the 3rd parties are making more and more Red-centric gear. Jarred, I remember taking your review advice for the cartoni focus which was the perfect match for the hvx200 at the time. Cartonis are quality.

Speaking for 1st AC's everywhere...how is this a good thing? Another career being replaced by technology. I say get rid of that feature so I can pay the mortgage, or buy more RED's.

RED hasn't even explained what the Touch Focus feature really is or how it works. I asked the specific questioned and it was overlooked or ignored. And people are saying how great it is or how bad it is because it will eliminate a focus puller. I think everyone should trade in their Jump to Conclusions Mats for Epics. I'd love more detailed information of what this feature really is and what it can and can't do.

How do you recharge the batteries? And what is the cost of such a device or does it come with the battery module? And seperate batteries? It would be nice to know the price since we already know the price of the module.

Touch Focus.
Take a traditional DSLR with a number of autofocus reticle positions, and swap the usual pad/joystick selection process for a touchscreen. It doesn't seem like a stretch, and sounds like a better system for filmmakers than still photographers, but a cool idea whose time has come.

But even cooler than that:
It sounds like there might be a camera API that we can program and interact with over a network.

Here is what I'd like to make it do:
(I'm making some assumptions here: 1) a network and/or bus accessible Focus API on the brain that can interact with the lens mount and report typical EXIF data like focal length, aperture. 2) The Focus API can also be used to control things like focal length and aperture. 3) Some memory is available on the brain that can load/recall commands. 4) The Red electronic lenses are fully controllable by the body either directly, or using some accessory like the gunner

1) Combination of focus "cues" and "transitions". Basically, program in the focal length you want for cue #1, cue #2, etc. then how long you want the transition to take for each cue (i.e. snap focus vs 3.24 second pull). You could use DMX light palette style cues and transitions to enable some very cool focus routines: ease-in, bounces, sine curves etc. Very repeatable POV effects could be done on set this way rather than doing it in post. Combined with mapping these cues to buttons on the grip… handheld will be very fun indeed. Not for every situation of course, but at the very least, a more customizable remote rig built right in.

2) Use the network to tie Cues from one touchscreen or redmote to multiple cameras (brains). In the simplest example of this, you could have a number of cameras and a fixed number of points of interest on a set. A single focus puller (AC, whatever) could command all cameras to focus on the same point at the same time (all cameras to cue #1), or have the A and B camera "swap focus" with each other. Each camera has a completely different frame of course, and focal distances are completely different for the same cue, but you could map one cue to different focal points on each camera. Or use 2 cameras with identical frames and have one snap focus and one slow focus at the same cue, so you can decide which you like in post. The ability to focus two cameras with Red electronic lenses at the same time will also be a nice feature for 3D rigs.

3) Use the network to enable data from one or more cameras to influence other cameras without human interaction. How might this be useful? Use the changing focal distance to the subject from camera A and use it to calculate the left to right movement of the subject on the second camera. Now use that value to control other settings like framerate, aperture, etc. So, as the subject moves away from camera A, ramp the framerate of camera B and adjust the iris to compensate for the change in exposure according to algorithm X. A nice speed ramp as the subject exits the set right on cue from 3 different angles aint too shabby.

So, to play around with these things on the network, should I be anticipating an Objective-C API, or something else? RedScript? And, if I can't get a camera anytime soon, how can I best start playing with the APIs and testing my ideas to make cool tools for myself and everyone else?

moderators: if this is off-topic feel free to move it.

You must be mistaken... camera shotgun shockmounts most definitely do not normally mount with 3/8-16...

Well, respectfully, Im not so sure. We have over 200 mic's from relatively inexpensive to the very best here and all suspensions on every one of them have 3/8 16 mounts. Also various camera's from Prosumer to Pro including Red of course. Our background was originally audio in which we still specialise.

What Im wanting to convey is 3/8 16 is the pro audio standard not 1/4 20.

If you check out all boom pole threads, mic stand treads, desk stands most will be 3/8 16.

We are always having to convert from 1/4 to 3/8 which is a real pain and also 1/4 isn't really strong enough for this application. It may be OK for a minature mic but not a short gun in a suspension. Either it tends to strip threads or wear out quickly as some of these mounts are plastic or not so good aluminium. Not that a mic should be on the camera anyway.

If the camera has 3/8 16 then a reducer to 1/4 20 can be fitted but a spigot from 1/4 20 to 3/8 16 still leaves a weak point by having 1/4 20 in the adaptor.

Also if 3/8 were available then the hot shoe would not be needed as an intermediate mount.

I realise some folks will want 1/4 20 but its not us.
