Will the Redmote be able to view and listen to a live feed?

But the Redmote Pro enables the focus puller to stay at home, monitor the shots and it even has an onboard espresso machine for those late hours.

should i even respond to this?

should i even respond to this?

See, at the risk of being down on another opinion, this really bothers me:

These specs are really impressive and i'm super excited for the release. But does anybody else see a hole in the market right now for a sub $4k camera with a full frame or dx/aps-c sized sensor? I imagine it would take a hit in resolution and probably max out at HD (or possibly 2K) resolution and maybe a setting for 60fps or 48fps. I rarely need more than HD resolution as I'm always finishing in HD anyway. 90% of my friends projects never need more than HD resolution and a downres from 2k looks fantastic.

And nothing brings the sexy like a full frame or DX/APS-C sensor. 2/3 just doesn't bring the sexy, it brings the news program or TV vibe. If Nikon and Canon could actually produce quality HD video (no jello) on their D-SLR's it would be a no brainer for me. I'm just thinking if I'm sitting down with a client do they pick the sexy or the technically perfect but sexless image? I think we know the answer. I"m wondering if the 2/3" will be DOA by the time it hits the markets. Certainly all this D-SLR footage is making it look that way.

$8k-$10K seems like a fantastic price for the resolution and sensor size, but it's resolution I'll rarely need. And if I do need it I'll rent an epic. I'm just saying it seems like there is a huge market for an affordable camera (with a FF or DX/APS-C sensor) with stable video (no jello) maxing out at HD or 2K resolution. Not sure how much a drop in resolution equals a drop in price.

I mean, its just apples and oranges. I live in the sub $6k camera world daily, and deal with the $30k cameras and $100k cameras regularly... How do I put this... Scarlet and Epic are for those who are interested in competing in the Uber high caliber world, and makes that possible for anyone down to $5000. Thats effing amazing!

Its simply whether you are a pro or not. Even if you have managed a fair work flow with dslr, its a tough realm to work in. Shitty color space, the wobble, etc. Just yesterday an associate was talking to me, kicking himself for his dlsr for video investment

bah... just read this ( no really, read it carefully ):

Amen.

Just plain old sinkin' Amen.

I don't care about price range. It is SO SO SO much cheeper than when the industry considers pro, the lower than $4000 market should realize all the tools available for making to switch.

We're talking $150,000 Vs. $10,000. And the $10,000 product is higher resolution and has amazing designers are so not egocentric and welcome, invite, and live by actually, I know - God forbid, TALKING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS AND MEETING THEIR NEEDS AND WANTS.

I wouldn't be telling that to a DP who shoots on an F-900 or Varicam or F-23 or Genesis.....

In fact I'd be surprised if most news was shot on 2/3" anymore, more likely 1/2" or 1/3".

Ya 2/3" is king.

I'm starting to see the Sony 1/2". Not so much 1/3".

But everything in studio I've worked around is always 2/3"

Hi,

The F23 has 1920 x 1080 x 3 = pixles.

Stephen

I really hope that the C mount option is still going to be available. I have more than a few C mount lenses and really would love to use them.

Hi,

The F23 has 1920 x 1080 x 3 = pixles.

Counting pixels (or, actually, photo sites) is not especially productive.

If Red's 4K bayer yields ~3K horizontal resolution, Scarlet's 3K should yield ~2.25K horizontal resolution. Unless the F23 is using pixel shifting or some other trick to increase resolution (which I don't think it is), it probably does something like ~1.8K horizontal resolution. Even non-bayer sensors need low-pass filters to avoid aliasing, although they don't have to be as aggressive.

It might outperform the 2/3" Scarlet in other ways, of course. With 3x the total sensor area it wouldn't be too surprising if it had better low light performance, for instance. Then again, the Scarlet's sensor is a generation or two newer. We'll have to wait and see.

In fact I'd be surprised if most news was shot on 2/3" anymore, more likely 1/2" or 1/3".

I've shot with the varicam and Red one. The red one affords a much more cinematic experience and a greater sexy factor partly (i would argue this is a big part) due to it's chip size. 2/3" is smaller than S16 and I find S16 somewhat limiting. Red one is an easy choice over any other digital cam. In my mind the F23 is a colossally expensive camera with an ENG aesthetic because of it's 2/3" chip.

Not trying to discount the unprecedented abilities of this cam, just making an honest observation about sensor sizes and the resulting aesthetic. And pointing out that there might be a market for less resolution and a larger sensor size if its possible to keep pricing the same or less (sub $5k like the scarlet), especially for those finishing almost exclusively in HD. Sexiness will trump specs, just look at all these yahoos shooting with DSLR's when the video isn't anywhere near ready for professional use. The allure is the sensor size and the resulting change in depth of field characteristics. I could see this being an option in the future; larger sensor size and less resolution, or smaller sensor size and more resolution. Choose one depending on your needs, taste, type of work you do etc.

This is an honest observation and not simply naysaying. I'm planning on purchasing the scarlet when it comes out. $250,000 capabilities (plus a great deal more) for $4K or $5K, I'd be a moron if i didn't.

And nothing brings the sexy like a full frame or DX/APS-C sensor. 2/3 just doesn't bring the sexy, it brings the news program or TV vibe.

The Sexy merits an entry in the next revision of the DSM-IV, alongside all the other erotic aberrations. One hopes the 21st-century Bolex, Scarlet 2/3", will help the healing to begin.

Hi,

The F23 has 1920 x 1080 x 3 = pixles.

The final image from any HD camera is 1920 x 1080 YUV encoded pixels. Scarlet's 16:9 format resolution debayered to a high quality Tiff RGB file will be 2880 x 1620 RGB encoded pixels or thereabouts. If you are shooting for 1.89:1 digital cinema wide screen format Scarlet will be 3072 x 1620 fully encoded pixels vs any HD camera cropped to 1920 x 1016 encoded pixels. No contest! The HD camera will have to scale up for 2048 x 1080 2k digital cinema projectors while Scarlet will be scaling down.

I really hope that the C mount option is still going to be available. I have more than a few C mount lenses and really would love to use them.

Me too. The only thing that would be better would be a screw on C-mount to RED mini-PL mount adapter. Hard to tell if the mini-PL is big enough for this from the photos. If it is that would be best as you could adapt a good C-mount zoom to mini-PL for use as a handy complement to the mini-primes. Are you listening RED TEAM? :bigear: Is this even a possibility?

I know it was mentioned that your able to scale @ different res. on the HDMI & HD-SDI. will 4:3 be supported?

If price were no object, or someone would give me, for free, a complete package of any of the upcoming RED cameras, I would choose the 2/3" over any other.

It seems that so many people are obsessed with shallow depth of field these days... ah well, if 3D catches on big time, it will quickly put an end to that.

Not to say that a 2/3" Cinema + a set of Mini-primes equals the price of the S35 brain alone, that doesn't give you great slowmo.

Sure. But each of these chips is only recording red, green or blue. Each channel only has 1920x1080 pixels. There is no more pixel information per color than a single chip camera. The pixel count is not multiplied as you suggest.

The best is the DPs who insist on the shallowest DoF possible, even using NDs so they can open up all the way, and then wind up with half the shots out of focus.
