No More Red Drives

Petri, Elsie, RED Drives only have a 90-day warranty anyway. And buying used drives is always a crap shoot, whether buying a RED Drive or a desktop HDD.

I doubt RED will ever authorize anyone to put third-party components into a RED Drive housing to use with the camera. This has come up many times and always gets shot down. Reason is that such practices have already been done and caused problems. You may have all the best intentions in the world when you do it for your own use, but if that drive ever gets into general circulation, it could be a problem. There is also more going on here than RED simply locking out other media. The way the camera works with the media, they have to profile the media and build support for it within the camera firmware. Not all media performs up to spec or if it does, may not perform the same as other types and could require different access modes or data block sizes, etc.. to get the best performance.

Others have brought up the possibility of RED offering support for other kinds of media that may be fast enough -- SxS for example. I'm unaware of any SxS media that would be fast enough, but maybe I'm missing something. I also don't see RED building support for a proprietary format that needs to be licensed from a competitor...

Whoa, I wasn't aware of that. Ouchie!

Oh, absolutely. I wasn't implying anything else.

Jeff, I'm very familiar with the reasoning, believe me. I can't think of a polite enough a way of putting this but if I'm brutally honest, I'd prefer to see hard benchmark data of the media RED has tested and deemed too slow or otherwise unsuitable... instead of people simply slamming their fist down and saying that's the way it is, "end of discussion!"

But yeah, that won't happen, I know. I'll try to live with it.

Huh, yeah. I don't see that ever happening.

Jeff, you have moderated this thread, heavily. So you are not impartial. Choice: Be a moderator or a part of this discussion.

Erik, I can't see why he can't be both?

Yeah, I'm cheap but there's no alternative when one is looking at a possibility of losing one's house.
Yeah, been there but things worked out. I always took solace that I would still have my R-1s though.:ihih:

(If a man pawns the tools of his trade, he may yet return to reclaim them and still be in that trade. If he sells the tools of his trade, he is probably no longer in that trade.)

Being a mod just means he has to stay sensible and not get into any flame wars, plus all that deleting spam and wrangling threads into line if they get out of hand.

Anyway, this is RED's website, they can run it the way they like.

If you have total control over what is said (can delete any post - and you do it), of course if is not a "both" situation. I can give historic references, but I guess it is obvious...

EDIT IN: Of course, in normal situations, he can be "both". But in this case he ereased "several pages" of posts. Im sure that was a right decision, but to then jump into the argument - not.

I've been telling my friends that if worse comes to worst and the bank forecloses my house, they'd find me living under a bridge, cradling my R1 on my lap.

Doesn't that apply only if the mod in question is evil? I don't think Jeff is evil :smile5:

O.K., back on topic. Is there any way to tell how many times a drive has cycled? Firmware inside the drive backboards or whatever?

No. It also apply if the mod is stupid, or uneducated or not up to speed with how to be a very good moderator of the red forum. Or something completely different ... but that is not the point.

None of those qualities apply to the mods on REDuser. We have a very high class group of mods, IMO. And if you think Brent's job is thankless, at least he gets paid for being vilified. Mods only get whatever pleasure they may derive from the pain caused by the flagellation.

Well, there's always SMART, provided it's been enabled. There are applications that can read SMART information from the drive, such as HD Sentinel for Windows. I use it on all my PCs; it has saved me lots of data by warning ahead of time that a drive might be about to crash.

No more Red Drives? ...wtf.. sorry, I meant WTFF!!!!

My drives are original 320gigs, they're due to die pretty soon I'd say (no signs yet, but they're hds so..), I was hoping to retire them soon and reserve for personal use only. Really need Red drives.. CF is NOT AN OPTION, which currently leaves NO OPTIONS.

There is a misconception that speed is simply the only factor. We put media through months of testing and profiling while also modifying both the camera and the drive firmware. Speed accounts for about 20% of what we evaluate. The media has to perform consistently under various write patterns, temperatures, wear cycles, insertions, record formats/speeds, etc.
Even after spending a ton of resources and money qualifying a piece of media, it may still not pass in the end.

This is getting silly.

First — You do not attack moderators. Period. And suggesting that a mod should not express his/her opinion is, well, silly.

Second — There are options. Maybe not optimal, but there are options. Buy used drives, rent drives, or get some 8 or 16 gig cards. (I've had to shoot a two day interview solely on four 8 gig cards. Just like shooting on 100 foot 35mm rolls).

Third — I love my camera, but would not sacrifice my family's home for it. There is always the option of renting a camera when needed for a project.

Hey Guys... i know this is maddening.. dont worry though, there is a solution just around the corner that is pretty exciting. We are not gonna say when, because we never ever hit the dates. I will let you know as soon as possible.

Man all this red bashing stresses,
I know first hand that red is in the we save your ass no matter what business.
Ok, there are right now no drives for whatever reason.
Red could take payments now for 64 GB cards so they are able to produce them in really large quantities and get them out sooner.
I am sure no one from red is really happy that the 64 GB aren't out the door yet.
Little patience.
Btw. All the dudes buying Alexa because of their prores workflow are Fucked in a much bigger way.
There are delivered alexas here, but just a few clients shoot with them because the pro res stuff simply doesnt work yet and no fucker needs a truck cabled to a cam to record a picture beside money doesn't matter directors like emmerich.
Worked this week on a commercial which switched to a mxed r1 for that reason.
Edit: I sure hope there will be a prores module, because on commercials here, producers are planing with alexas so they don't need to transcode.

How about next week - the doctor says my ear surgery has healed and I can dive again once a small infection is cured. Need that 64 gig card. :)

Seriously, good to hear from you that help is on the way.
