No More Red Drives

Dont worry Kaya.. we have tough skin. Some people on this thread have a right to be upset, some don't. We remember the people that give support, and those that don't. We get alot of requests for favors along the way, and you'd be surprised how much we look at people's posts and people's public attitude to see if we fulfill those requests... :)

As for 64GB compact flash cards.. forget about them. Yesterday's news. We are jumping forward a few steps.

Interesting. Now I'm very intrigued, excited, and ready to sell a few things to plan for buying whatever it is that's on the horizon. Sounds like you guys have something cool up your sleeves. Nice!

This is getting silly.

....a mod should not express his/her opinion is...
We have her mods? Which one of you is in drag?:biggrinjester:

but I guess you were just being politically correct.

But back on topic, I'm wondering if the new "media" will be in the form of a CF card or "other"?

That's kind of scary, Jarred. So you mean, everybody who posted in this thread...

Jarred has something sooooo up his sleeve.

Muahahahahaha it must be hard to keep it all inside.

Fresh.

Hey Guys... i know this is maddening.. dont worry though, there is a solution just around the corner that is pretty exciting. We are not gonna say when, because we never ever hit the dates. I will let you know as soon as possible.

Thanks Jarred.

can't wait to see what this is...I just hope that whatever it is, it is as portable as a flash card, that is one of the huge benefits of recording to CF, no mounts, no weight. I would like to keep my EPIC as streamlined as possible for many applications.

IMHO, it's way way better than any of the past options.

Obviously this "new step" will be with Epic/Scarlet in mind.

However, can you tell us if it will also be possible to easily utilize this new media option with unmodified Red One cameras?

Yes this is true, I got a great email today from Sean and he is sending me a drive that he uses himself so I am more than happy considering I have a concert shoot next month for Alice In Chains and The Deftones! Thanks Sean!

I can clear this up quickly. We shipped, carrier had an error on their end, and they never notified us. The first we heard that it was never delivered is when Nino just recently reached out to us. Sean is taking care of him.

Hi Meryem. I like the idea of little weight. What do you do to get around the weight of batteries at the moment?

Well, there's always SMART, provided it's been enabled. There are applications that can read SMART information from the drive, such as HD Sentinel for Windows. I use it on all my PCs; it has saved me lots of data by warning ahead of time that a drive might be about to crash.

I don't know if the internal RAID controller of a RED Drive uses SMART or not. If it does, it would only be usable by RED for their own diagnostics -- SMART does not pass through to the host interface. That said, I've found SMART to be surprisingly good at letting me know when a drive is going to fail. Typically as soon as SMART errors show up, the drive needs to be replaced or at least evaluated. It's saved us a lot of headaches over the past few years for datacenter and RAID management.

Best news I've read all week. :)

There is a misconception that speed is simply the only factor.
Well, I did write "or otherwise unsuitable"... :)

We put media through months of testing and profiling while also modifying both the camera and the drive firmware. Speed accounts for about 20% of what we evaluate. The media has to perform consistently under various write patterns, temperatures, wear cycles, insertions, record formats/speeds, etc. Even after spending a ton of resources and money qualifying a piece of media, it may still not pass in the end.
Being a bit of a storage enthusiast, I'd love to learn more of the process. You have my email address ;)

Third — I love my camera, but would not sacrifice my family's home for it. There is always the option of renting a camera when needed for a project.
I guess this was aimed at yours truly. First off, I have no family. My hobbies are what keeps me going at this point. Secondly, selling my R1 would keep the bank happy for an additional six months after which I'm back in the same situation. I don't consider that a solution to anything.

Consider me officially intrigued. I'd like to think I'm quite up-to-date with storage technologies but I have a feeling RED will surprise me once again.

HD Sentinel reads SMART data from HDDs behind a 3ware/AMCC 9500S-8 RAID SATA controller. It was unable to get much data from the RED Drive over USB, but it did report that SMART was enabled. I'm pretty sure HDS could tell me lots if I yanked the drives out from the enclosure and attached them to a PC via SATA.
