No More Red Drives

Meryem, all of this goes without saying for you, but just think of how tiny 1.8" SSDs are. ((ASSUMING that SSDs will be the new stuff)) But even if it isn't SSDs it will still be tiny media cause RED prides themselves in the whole postcard thing. A 1.8" SSD with a rugged enclosure will still be a postcard compared to an external recorder.

I know there is no need for pictures with you guys, but it makes for good comic relief:

And with the incredible weight and size of EPIC you will never notice it, that also goes without saying. The smallest capacity SSD would be 128GB, so even in a straight weight comparison to a pair of 64GB CFs it can't be more than a few ounces extra! :)

The separate SSD module would be what adds some weight, and not much at that! BUT, if CFs are gone before EPIC... that could mean we will see a side-SSD module! :crossing fingers: I hope that can work cause it would be swhheeet!

Wonder if any of the naysayers will apologize after the release if it proves to truly be better, cheaper? Nah... probably not. They are for the most part just Carpers (of the) Diem.

Not only off base, but way off base. People who need drives now are not naysayers. The release of better and cheaper storage in the future, while certainly welcome and laudatory, does not mean current discomfort does not exist for some.

I resent the vilification for those who report problems.

Best regards,

Leo

Elsie you repeatedly show yourself to be so far out of touch with current productions I really wonder if you should be arguing with people on this forum. What exactly do you do for a living?

What problems? True, some here have an immediate need for a Red Drive. Others here have just jumped on the grumble wagon because they "think" they will not be able to shoot in the same way they are accustomed to shooting. It's simply wrong to say that and calling the people and the company names because they do not cater to an individual's wants is pretty unfair. If RED were recalling all drives and destroying them so no one could have one, then maybe that would be grounds for a verbal lynching. But they have said they will continue to service drives, there are drives available to rent, there are used drives for sale, there is possibly an even better option in the wings.

I guess I just hate to see unfair play. RED it seems has pretty much taken a stance of not answering these (IMO) unjust accusations and I guess I see why when Brent was answering questions and giving as much information as he felt was allowed, and was more or less called a liar.

This camera company has treated me better than any business has ever treated me in my entire life. While Steven Soderbergh, for instance, can get access to an Epic or Tattoo before me, it is my understanding that he cannot own an Epic before me because he probably doesn't own a Stage 2 R-1.

I will not stand idly by while whiners and Silas Marners (before Eppy) complain and denigrate RED Digital Cinema Camera Company.

(Just to be clear, I will not die for this company, so if you are really, really pissed about what I just said... Don't shoot! I take it back)

Since that has nothing to do with who I am as a person, none of your fucking business.

Elsie, your posts are profound exaggerations if not outright fabrications of the posts on this thread.

there are drives available to rent, [/I]

Actually, I believe the original poster is a rental house, and his beef was the inability to replace 9 faulty drives with new inventory. A rental house should be forced to rent?

It seems a little off the mark to say that there is no problem and to put a target on the back of RED owners who raise real-world issues which they are having with cameras and gear. We all learn from it. That is one of the unique qualities of the company, they let us air the laundry, for better and worse, as long as "worse" is done reasonably respectfully and with good intentions for everyone.

RED is a maturing company (which seems a little ridiculous to say, given that the company is still what, four years old? still a start-up by most standards...) and, in theory, they should be able to supply crucial replacement parts.

I would put long-form recording media in the "crucial" category. Like batteries. Or a monitor/viewfinder. You can't really run your camera effectively without these.

But, in reality, they are still a start-up with a relatively small team, compared to their competitors, so some patience and forebearance is still part of the landscape, while we wait for the manufacture of these items to catch up to the "speed of RED."

Leo, I do not recognize you as being superior, therefore I do not accept your opinion.

No, they should be "allowed" to upgrade to the better, cheaper, faster replacement that is just around the corner. They are a rental house aren't they? Don't they want better stuff than their competitors?

Rental houses (and smaller operators as well) stand to lose a lot of money waiting - not just on drives, but on full camera packages. Business will flow towards the houses with the most fully supported packages. It has nothing to do with the future or "right around the corner" and everything to do with the potential for lost sales right now. Today. Not in an indeterminate future.

These are basic facts of the rental business and not difficult to understand.

Your are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

Frankly, you're the poster-boy for the perils of not having a genuine real-names policy.

Red does not need you as a self-appointed defender of the faith and your protestations do not change the fact that the drive situation is both a problem for some and a worry for others.

Lastly, your accusation that we are denigrating Red is an outright lie.

It appears that you might be doing the same to Red.

Having worked in supply chain stuff, these things are generally very complex because they'd probably have to commit to a millions of dollars of inventory for a new batch and if they're waiting on a new product, then the cost of both the new and the old has to go up one way or the other. In the end this is probably best for both side.

Change is good but not always comfortable.

I defer to the voice of reason.

Sometimes our babies make us proud, and we show pictures to any who will look. Sometimes they talk back, they lie, they sneak out of the house, they come home late... Hell, I know a boy who nearly burned the family house to the ground, but he has grown into a decent guy and his parents and family still love him.

This is still a young company. These are normal growing pains. If you jumped into the beta and reveled in your genius, having chosen the Red One, then now is your time to suck it up. Sure it blows, but this isn't isolated and you are not alone. You will either find a way to keep your Reds working or, if you can't sell the client something else, you may loose out on a few jobs. The smart businessmen will find their way through this.

Good luck all.

You are mistaken.

This situation could have been ameliorated by better communication directly from Red. A statement of the situation, what Red intends to do about it, and some reasonable time-line.

You're already passed judgement so I don't believe I'm mistaken.

I would rather them make a proper announcement when they're ready rather than have a premature announcement.

Hey Guys... i know this is maddening.. dont worry though, there is a solution just around the corner that is pretty exciting. We are not gonna say when, because we never ever hit the dates. I will let you know as soon as possible.
Wait, wait... Lemme guess!!!

Leo, that is based on the assumption that whatever caused this media lapse didn't jump out of the blue.

I agree with Scott when he says that this might be a time when owners will have to just deal with this unfortunate situation. Hopefully very few will need to purchase additional media before the drought is over. I am sure RED is hustling like crazy to get to the other side of this, and they are doing everything they can to help those who need it.

This could be serious, if it goes on too long. I for one always want to give RED the benefit of the doubt. They have given us gear we only dreamed of, and at prices that make little sense. So, in that spirit, and knowing Jim ran a "little" company before RED, Id like to think this will be a bump that will be quickly left behind. Remember, they are still servicing existing drives. Used drives might go up in price, people might regret having to face that market, I totally get that, but there is a heck of a lot of media collecting dust out there... so it isn't the end of the world, it is a bump, that hopefully won't affect many.

I am no rental house, but it is pretty obvious they have genuine concerns. The show must go on and good customers could start dating other houses any moment.

For many this might go completely unnoticed, a minor inconvenience to many others, but to houses with gear rushing in and out daily, tracking numbers as they go up and down, this could prove troublesome.

All the best to those affected, and to those working on a speedy solution. And lets hope to see that shiny new gear soon! Might be here before we know it!

I really don't want to be that guy... Again... So this time I'm pulling the plug instead of cleaning.

I get it, I think we all get it. There's a lot of uncertainty, there's confusion, mass hysteria, cats and dogs living together... Maybe we can try again after some heads have settled.
