No More Red Drives

Dont worry Kaya.. we have tough skin. Some people on this thread have a right to be upset, some don't. We remember the people that give support, and those that don't. We get alot of requests for favors along the way, and you'd be surprised how much we look at people's posts and people's public attitude to see if we fulfill those requests... :)

As for 64GB compact flash cards.. forget about them. Yesterday's news. We are jumping forward a few steps.

A ... solid state data buffer? An intermediate stage that buffers data and allows it to be written to 3rd party media at a slower rate than normally required?

(Not that I even remotely understand what I just said....)

Hey Guys... i know this is maddening.. dont worry though, there is a solution just around the corner that is pretty exciting. We are not gonna say when, because we never ever hit the dates. I will let you know as soon as possible.

ok, thats reassuring to some extent.

I'm praying my Red drives last till Epic arrives though, or a solution with a better £/GB ratio than CF offers currently, as I can't afford the numbers of CF needed to make them practical, nor the cost of an assistant to make smaller numbers workable. When your shooting, you just want to shoot, not wrangle.

Now if Red made a portable, battery powered, offload system that could take a CF card and dump if to a mirrored disk, something like a Red Raid with a CF slot and a button called "Empty card", maybe with a little green "I've been verified and dismounted indicator" ..CF cards might work for me. Maybe the new base stations and modules could be battery powered? (being USB powered by a laptop would be inefficient for me, as they don't have enough juice to last a day when remote)

Hi Meryem. I like the idea of little weight. What do you do to get around the weight of batteries at the moment?

you can't - the belt clip can help re-distribute it - but there is a large weight difference between CF and a drive or SSD, and that can knock a lot of weight from current RED ONE configurations - I'm just putting in a bid for a solution as streamlined as the current CF cards because one of the (many) great advances of the EPIC is going to be the ability to run a much lighter weight camera. 64gb CF with the option of dual card slots sounded pretty darn good to me, it's a little hard to imagine "better" --

looking forward to RED lifting the veil on all of these innovations. i'm sure we will all be blown away. just can't help being curious.

I guess I know what it is, wireless transmission to a recorder.
Somekind of codex style.
Or wireless transmitting to your macpro, if you have two receivers you have instant backups using a second computer, and on the body you can record to the proxymodule to be able to have quick offline files.

But if you like to shoot on 500 GB ssd modules, shoot on them.

Guess based on craziness over there in the red HQ

Almost something like this. Throw an SSD drive in there, attach it to your belt and you are shooting and offloading at the same time. :-)

I know it's not a RAID but it does a nice job in a pinch or when you're off shooting your own projects.

By the way, this device has worked well with RED 16GB cards.

I understand your frustration - but 16GB CF cards are a completely viable option.

not if you're shooting a half hour to 45 minute interview and have to keep interrupting the conversation to reload every few minutes. It pisses people off.

Every individual has their own special needs. Luckily, there are options to satisfy those special-needs people, like buying a used Red Drive that is for sale on Reduser.

Maybe, too, if you take control of the interview instead of being controlled by the interviewee, you could have them o.k. with the ten second card changes?

Just offering some alternative ideas for getting the job done in a way that is outside of one's comfort zone.

Heh try doing that with some high profile CEO's/Exec Teams and they and their PR team would walk away within minutes. These guys earn more in 10 minutes than we do in a year, so every second wasted in unacceptable except in very extreme circumstances. We work for clients not the other way around Elsie. Documentary shoots are different, but for corporate work not an option unfortunately.

And people keep mentioning buying used drives, NEVER buy used hard drives, you have no idea of their previous usage. Renting from a good house can be an option however, maybe there's some rental houses on here who can do us some deals on drive only rental?

Jay, that's probably Sam's best option, to rent before going into a high profile interview, even if he already has a RED Drive. But it sounds like you are referring to a puff piece where the interviewee (implicitly) gets to determine the questions and answers beforehand. That is, if they are paying for the interview. I'm just thinking since they are getting softballs tossed at them, they should be o.k. with a few delays if necessary. They are probably egocentric, after all.

But I cede your point. I was just saying that Dylan's point covers about 95 percent of us and that just because 5 per cent are not, that does not invalidate his statement.

Forgive me while I put on my realist-jackass hat and drink from my half-empty cup... But how is renting drives any safer than buying used ones? It's not like you know the history of the rental drives either. The rental houses only can guess as to what their customers may do with them while they're out and the best they can do is test them and say "yep, they worked (for that test)". A used drive is a used drive, regardless of who owns them.

As long as RED is capable of supporting and repairing RED drives, I don't think it really matters where you buy a used one from. And when buying a used one, it's only reasonable to assume it should arrive in working condition and be fully functional. As to how long it will actually last, that's a crap shoot, just as it is when buying any hard drive, especially a used one.

If used is the only option, I'd rather rent drives than purchase. You can easily rent a few more than required, and if one fails, you're not stuck with the purchase price.

Of course we'll always be subject to cataclysmic failure spoiling footage. Whenever possible, it's smart to change as often as possible and download to redundant drives, testing as you go. Not always an option, unfortunately.

Really, we all record to "used" drives.

At the risk of being denied "favors" or subjected to other punishments, I'll say that this episode has not been Red's shinning hour. I eagerly await the replacement, as it's always been the scary link in the production chain.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Wonder if any of the naysayers will apologize after the release if it proves to truly be better, cheaper? Nah... probably not. They are for the most part just Carpers (of the) Diem.

Things are moving extremely fast in the world of storage. New breakthroughs almost every week, it seems. It's great, IMO, if Red is able to turn on a dime and hit us with the latest shit with perfect timing.

While many larger companies tend to have steering mechanisms like the rudder on the Titanic, Red is much nimbler and can make 180 turns like a Jeep Wrangler.

You may very well be right. It may instead prove to be their Magic Hour.

Red drives for rent, One RAM 120 gig and Two 320 Red Raid Drives.
